But, Black would test me, threaten me, force me to stay on my toes.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
27 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

A few weeks ago I had decided I was ready to buy a 996 Cabriolet. Up until then, I had been unsure what my next sports car would be. It had been a few months since I sold my C5 Corvette, and after that I hadnt been sure what or when would be next. The C5 was black. All black.
My daily drive is silver, and I have come to appreciate how forging Silver is compared to Black. Water spots, dust, a few days of driving around LA...they dont really diminish the appearance of silver....
When it came time to make a decision about the Cabriolet, it came down to Silver and Black. Silver was beautiful, precise, machined, forgiving.
But, Black would test me, threaten me, force me to stay on my toes. I felt the pull of the challenge, and I got sucked back into the realm of the dark side, and I couldnt turn back.
It wasnt just the allure of Black. It was also the story of this particular Carrera that left me with no choice but to buy it. Its a good story, and one that seemed to represent the least risky Porsche for under $20,000 I could find. Time will tell whether the Dark Side pulled me toward the right decision, or whether Silver would have been the better choice. Theres no turning back now though.
You thought I bought both? No no no...although that would be nice.
The sognificant other isnt really a car person. She drives a silver Volvo XC90 and couldnt care less about my Porsche.
Not a fan of silver, but I have a black car and swore I'd not do another...I'm now about to pull the trigger on a black 996 coupe! They look so good in black!
Congrats!
Haha, I know you bought the black one from another tread. I have a couple Boxsters I need to finish fixing small stuff and sell, which the 911 was the replacement for.
I'm in the same situation. I previously owned a black 4x4 Frontier Pro 4x and after I sold it I swore I would never own a black vehicle again. In fact I've only had white vehicles since, except for my green project Jeep. But I digress...
I am now in the midst of deciding on whether or not I can handle a black Carrera that is already lightly peppered on the front end. Will it drive me insane or cause me to not nitpick over every little speck that gets on it!? The car is 500 miles away and I have only seen pictures...that are not, shall we say, definitive of what it actually looks like. The car checks all my boxes and passed a PPI so now it's decision time.
500 miles... I would have to know for sure. Maybe the seller will send you better pictures. If it checks all your boxes, and you feel like its imperfections will make it easier for you to relax and not worry about it, that sounds like a car you could enjoy.
There are are some great paint protection products made just for black cars, and Im planning on doing that with mine on a regular basis.
Spoke too soon. Seller told me to find another car while trying to arrange a meeting time. After paying $300 for a PPI yesterday. I'm livid. No more details until it's resolved I don't know if he's on here.
Happened to me with an '87 Carrera coupe. Test drove it, loved it, returned it to the dealer ready to make a deal...
"Sorry, just sold it!" Turns out
the
buyer saw me pulling out with the car as I took my test drive, ran to his bank and secured a home equity loan, and was back at the dealer before me.
Sorry about your luck, but the right car
will
come along.
Oh the stories I can share. I've been on the hunt for about 2 months.
First car I passed on due to high mileage though it had a ton of documented work done and a straight up seller that was seemingly honest about the car and very communicative (dodged a bullet as new owner posted here about his problems with the car after buying it)
So far one guy traded the car in to a dealer while we were negotiating price (should have just paid him the extra grand he wanted I suppose) and now the car sits on a lot for $5K more.
Third car I almost bought the guy decided last minute that he didn't trust certified bank checks and wanted me to bring cash. To Miami. Yeah. Not happening.
Now this car. I'm gonna start calling 996's my Eleanor.
No question, a black car is a labour of love. But you've already preselected yourself into that exclusive group that loves their 911, or you wouldn't or shouldn't be looking.
Learn to look after it properly (that means being meticulous about washing technique), learn to do your own paint corrections and protection(or at least keep it corrected after a good detailing), and it will reward in spades.
In short:
1 - soft nozzle pressure washer rinse
2 - snowfoam
3 - soft nozzle pressure washer rinse
4 - pH neutral mitt wash - 2 bucket technique - never EVER mitt a car covered in mud/grit/dirt - instant swirling with one wipe!
5 - soft nozzle pressure washer rinse
6 - large soft microfibre towel off
7 - stand back and enjoy!

Hopefully in the next few days. It's on another island at the moment, the owners just dropped $2k getting it ready (needed a new oil cooler).
MBH911, I did not intend to hijack your post and apologize, I was sharing your excitement with my own (been 1.5 year search)
Please see this thread RE: my almost 911 purchase.

Back on topic, that cabriolet looks killer with the black wheels and I'm generally not a fan of black on black.
That sucks. I guess theres no guarantees with this whole endeavor. I spent $250 on a PPI a few weeks ago on another 996 and they said the car needed $4800 worth of repairs. The seller would only come down $500 off his asking price of $18,000 so I walked. The PPI was money well spent.
