Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys, got a quote for the following from a local indy, is this way out of whack or seem about right? I think I may just to the SAI myself and put off doing the water pump, was going to do it as preventative maintenance but didn't expect it to be so much. 1- IMS bearing and Clutch R&R Price: $3225 Parts & Labor + Tax 2- Water Pump & Thermostat Price: $1105 Part& Labor + Tax 3- Secondary Air Injection Pump Price: $710 Parts& labor + Tax Thanks, Chris

POST 2Original post

As a point of reference price out how much the parts actually cost? did they give you their labor rates?

POST 3Original post

I just had most of that done other than the water pump, which had already been done. LN IMS Sachs clutch kit and new bolts AOS RMS Oil Change Clutch release arm ball ($40) All in around $3K at my Porsche only Indy near Phoenix. They are currently at $95/hr labor rate.

POST 4Original post

I am in the DC Metro and my local indy charges $145/hour. I just had most of what you list and more completed as preventive maintenance and your quoted costs are inline with what I paid. Believe, me afterwards I was second guessing if I should have spend so much. However, I had the IMS Solution installed and the shop said my clutch would have failed with-in 5K more miles... so it is worth it. Good luck!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Did a quick search and here's what I found for part prices: Clutch kit: $1700 IMS: $800 Water pump: $450 SAI: $382 Total: $3332 in parts, so they're charging about $1700 in labor? At $100-$150/hour, that makes this a 10-15 hour job? Sound about right?

POST 6Original post

The IMS and clutch may be more than you want to tackle. However, the water pump and thermostat replacement isn't very hard at all. You should give it a try if you have the space to work on the car.

POST 7Original post

Way too much money for a clutch kit - they're jacking you! My LUC Clutch kit (Clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing and throw-out bearing, + clutch alignment tool - all Sachs parts) was around $400...If I remember correctly I got it from RockAuto... The labor rate and time seem about right (they get it right out of "the book"... you pay that # regardless of how long it takes them to do the job)... I'd ask them to swap the IMSB for "The Solution" to see what the difference will be - labor should be exactly the same. Good luck

POST 8Original post

Yes. R&R the engine is where the time is and 10 to 15 hours is pretty quick.

POST 9Original post

Sounds about right, depending on the IMS bearing you are putting in.

POST 10Original post

For that price, are they also planning on replacing the dual mass flywheel?

POST 11Original post

i'm picking up a car tmr for which the previous owner did a bunch of things in the 2nd half of 2017, here's a quick breakdown. IMS, RMS, engine R&R (about 8.5 hrs @ $140/hr) Water pump, thermostat and drive belt only 1 hr w/engine out anyway Clutch parts including slave cylinder and release bearing 0.5 hrs Timing chain tensioner was 3 hrs hope this helps

POST 12Original post

For Los Angeles that's probably about right. Around my area labor is anywhere from $110 - $165 per hour.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, I reached out to a couple other indy's, the only other one that came back was about $2k more than the original estimate so I decided to go with the original one.

POST 14Original post

This is good ammunition for telling my wife why it is a bargain to buy new tools. . I forgot how expensive it is to pay people to work on vehicles.

POST 15Original post

The PO of my car had a lot of that done at Dieter's here in San Diego in 2015. It sounds like your shop is right in the ballpark. LN dual row IMS RMS AOS T/O bearing Pilot bearing Water Pump Thermostat Coolant tank cap Serpentine belt IMS chain tensioner There were a few other minor things replaced too. Parts were: $2341.26 and labor was $2663.88

$710 for air secondary air pump is nuts. I bought one a few weeks back new (bosche) for $300 and took not more than 15 mins to install (and I suck with wrenches)

POST 17Original post

The shop's estimate looks reasonable, especially if they're familiar with the 996 & do good work. For the work though, SAI is very easy. The water pump isn't that bad either, plus you can add the low temp thermostat while in there.

Yep - 13 hours for RMS, AOS, IMS Solution, Clutch

POST 19Original post

I was quoted about $2600 + tax from LN approved installer. That is inspection / oil change and bearing only. Apparently i get a warranty then. this is in mpls mn

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 14955363

What does the warranty cover?

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 14955597

I think the inspection of dropping the oil pan looking for debris that is in oil BEFORE putting bearing in gives a part warranty on the LN bearing for some # of years? If they drop pan, see debris they will choose not to proceed with LN Bearing install due to a compromised motor. I think LN Engineering uses this as their protocol. I could be wrong, as I'm fairly new to this IMS issue.

IMS RETROFIT AND IMS UPGRADE PRODUCTS ARE PROVIDED WITH A LIMITED PARTS ONLY WARRANTY, guaranteeing the IMS Retrofit and IMS Upgrade to be free of defects in material and workmanship for thirty (30) days from date of purchase only when purchased through and installed by authorized dealers only (i.e. PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION). PRODUCT REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR LIMITED PARTS ONLY WARRANTY INCLUDING SUBMISSION OF ORIGINAL BEARING AND COPY OF WORK ORDER SHOWING PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION. There is NO WARRANTY FOR DO-IT-YOURSELF INSTALLATIONS (i.e. NOT PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED). Most reputable repair facilities will carry a shop owner's policy to cover incidental damages from a failed part they installed or faulty repair. It is up to the installer to warranty the installation. LN Engineering will, at its election, repair, replace or make appropriate adjustment where LN Engineering inspection discloses any such defects occurring in normal usage within thirty (30) days after purchase on an intermediate shaft that has received the IMS Upgrade or on a IMS Retrofit installed as preventative maintenance* and when all warranty procedures are followed as directed. POST 23Original post

Thanks for clarification. Guess I'll drive the wheels off for the first 30 days.

POST 24Original post

Getting a refund on the bearing is kind of like salt in the wound if your motor explodes, no?

POST 26Original post

That page is ancient and out of date. Full warranties are listed on imsretrofit.com and imssolution.com. However, I can clarify some main points: Pre-qualification and registration is required for any warranty. The Single Row Pro and Classic Dual Row IMSR has a 2 yr/24k warranty. The IMS Solution is a 5 yr/unlimited mile warranty. As with most if not all genuine, OEM, or aftermarket parts, the warranty is a parts only warranty. Labor warranty is supplied by the shop. In some cases, shops that purchase from certain wholesalers, such as SSF Imported Auto Parts, get parts and labor warranty through the wholesaler that is passed onto the customer if they chose. A good example of this is that there is no warranty on any parts from Porsche if they are not installed by a dealer. Good example is I had a shop rebuild an engine and the new timing chain failed, causing the engine to blow up. Shop got a free timing chain. On the plus side, we've never had a reported failure of a Single Row Pro or Classic Dual Row IMSR or failure with the IMS Solution, which has now been out 5 years. The best warranty is one you don't have to use.

Tell me about it. My wifes 2014 Audi Q5 suffered a rear wiper motor failure, and the local dealer wanted $400 for the part. My 996 rear window regulator motor failed and the local Porsche dealer wanted $800! Shopping around and doing the work myself saved big money.
