Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I'm normally on the 951 forum but was asked to take a look at a 99 C4 and do some really minor touch up stuff. The car has 100k miles and the owner is moving to Mexico soon. He wants me to give the car a good inspection before he takes it down there. I know that the left valve cover is leaking and that the brakes will probably need to be done but what else should I look for? I can do nearly anything on the 951 so it will take a major item to scar me away from any work on the 996. Is there a good place to find bolt torque specs or other info needed to work on these cars other than the factory service manuals? I would also like to know a good write up on the valve cover oil leak fix. I did a quick search but didnt find anything too specific. What sealants work best on the valve cover, silicone or anaerobic (like locktite 574)? Thank you in advance for my somewhat new guy questions.

POST 2Original post

it's not a valve cover, it's an integrated cam housing similar to the 944 8v cam "box". I use loctite 574.

POST 3Original post

Before I pulled the cam cover, I would clean and check the spark plug tubes as the source of the leak. Rick 99 996C4 87 944S

Has your friend done the 90k mile Porsche maintainence, if not that list might be a good starting point.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the tips guys. As a matter of corse I was going to change the trans oil, check the coolant tank, belt, CVs...all that normal stuff that is wear items. I picked the car up today and when I started it it was very weak. Battery and alternator are good. What is the failure mode for the starter? Should this one be replaced? The owner said it is worse when the car is hot.
