Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm replacing front & rear pads at home and my C2 still has Porsche (Textar) pads installed with shims.
Leading evidence: 'Install with shims' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install with shims' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If you're doing rotors as well, get yourself a decent impact driver to remove the rotor set screws.

Are brake pad shims recommended for continued use on a daily driver that never sees the track?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Are brake pad shims recommended for continued use on a daily driver that never sees the track?
I'm replacing front & rear pads at home and my C2 still has Porsche (Textar) pads installed with shims.
The aftermarket seems to mostly ignore the use of shims so I'm wondering what folks here typically do.
I removed the shims the first time I changed the brakes and have not looked back. I have not had excessive brake noise.
I purchased a bottle of CRC Disc Brake Quiet at the time but haven't ever needed to use it.
With no shims and the brake wear sensors zip-tied out of the way, brake changes are ridiculously fast.
If you're doing rotors as well, get yourself a decent impact driver to remove the rotor set screws. They strip very easily with a standard Phillips-head screwdriver. I use a Ryobi 18v impact driver for the set screws...
I just clean up and reuse the old shims, applying CRC Disc Brake Quiet to them so they adhere to the new pads. In my experience the shims help ensure the pads pull away from the rotor completely, reducing drag and premature pad wear.
If you're not changing pads for the track, I don't know why you wouldn't leave them. It's the repeated changing them out all the time that is a hassle. For me, Street= shims, track no shims.
Thanks, all. I've taken things apart and the shims are in nice shape so I'll reuse them. Sticky tape is expired so I'm going to try a few small dabs of Permatex Copper hi-temp RTV when reassembling.
I had to replace my front caliper pistons and went with stainless pistons from racing brakes. Their inner diameter is bigger (benefits of using stainless is you can make the parts thinner) so the shims/dampers wouldn't fit. So I left them out - it didn't make any difference.
OEM Genuine pads. My intent was to just keep everything stock, but the plugs from the old dampers were rusted into the brake pistons and I couldn't get them out. Ended up having to replace all pistons on the front calipers with SS from racing brake.
