The 4 post is awesome for storage and jobs that dont require wheel removal, but I cant figure out a good way to get the wheels off the ground and the car stabilized to do a job (I need to remove the cv bots so I can drop the transmission to diagnose and fix a leak, probably a rms or imsb seal).

Drive car on lift, raise lift a little off the garage floor if your car is lowered like mine, use a floor jack under the car with some wood spacers and hockey pucks to lift each end of the car for jackstands (just like if you were lifting on the garage floor).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Could I get some insight from anyone here with a 4 post lift that services their 996 on the lift? How do you lift the wheels off the lift platform to do work that requires it? I just put a 4 post lift in for storage last fall, prior to that Id been using a maxjax portable two post. Thanks in advance for any advice.

POST 2Original post

I have a 4-post BendPak HD-9. I have put my 996 on jackstands on the 4-post lift. You can also purchase a pair of rolling bridge jacks that go on the 4-post lift which are two small hydraulic scissor lifts to lift each and of the car, or one end at a time. I would love to have the bridge jacks but have not sprung for the price tag (a pair costs as much as the entire lift did). I wanted a 2-post lift but 2-posts are so wide it was going to take up more of my garage than I wanted so elected for the 4-post. As you know a 2-post takes up about 1-1/2 car widths of a typical garage, even a typical "oversized" garage. I have an EZCarLift scissor lift that I can use for engine drops, etc when I need full access to under the car. Just looked to see if I took a photo of the last time I had the car on jackstands on the lift but it looks like I did not get a picture.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have the same lift: the HD9. How did you jack up the car to put it on jack stands?

POST 4Original post

As Nick said, a pair of rolling bridge jacks matched to the 4-post lift is the ticket. Unfortunately they start at about $700 apiece. Pros of the 4-post are ease of loading/unloading, parking space underneath, and lower concrete pad requirements vs 2-post. Cons -- you apparently will sooner or later give yourself a concussion and the ramps and jacks obstruct your workspace. I'm shopping lifts myself, and opinions seem to be all over the place on the best route to go. You either use a jack cradle with bottle jacks, or jack directly on the ramps as if the car were on the ground.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yup, 10-4 on the concussion, Ive managed to smack my noggin a couple of times already. Rolling bridge jacks sound awesome, but not sure I want to spend that kind of money right now. Ill check out the jack cradles.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looks like these are what you are talking about : BendPak jp-3 sliding jack platform, about $145 each. Perfect. Thanks all.

No the JP-3 pump jacks are not what you want unless you are lifting a Jeep or Pickup truck...their drive over height would never work on a sports car. They stick up well above the plane of the lift platform. You need the pneumatic/hydraulic RJ-45 bridge jacks which fold down almost flush when not in use. They are about $1200 each plus the plumbing kit and shipping...so you are around $3000 for the full setup. Plus installation cost if you are not doing it yourself. I'd think you would need a forklift or something to set them in place on the lift, I think they are pretty heavy. Oooh I wish they were that cheap. See pricing listed above. Drive car on lift, raise lift a little off the garage floor if your car is lowered like mine, use a floor jack under the car with some wood spacers and hockey pucks to lift each end of the car for jackstands (just like if you were lifting on the garage floor). My ESCO stands will sit on the lift platform. The jack stand tripod on the front of the car is flush with the inner edge of the lift. The rear is nearly centered. It works and is very stable once up, but getting it up on the jackstands is a bit tricky, use caution.

POST 8Original post

I have a 4 post and put my cars on jack stands, you need 6 jack stand to do it easily. 2 of the need to be able you extend pretty high. Put the car on the lift, in gear, handbrake on and raise the lift 3-4 feet, place the 2 long extension stands under a central jacking point on the front of the car/chassis I use a 4x4 wooden block between the car and stands. Gently lower the lift and hence the car onto the stands/wood, you have to do it slowly and keep moving the stand into the exact position you need. Then slowly lower the lift which will raise the car, once its high enough place normal jackstands under the jacking points. Raise the lift and the car will lower onto the jackstands on the lift. Then follow the same procedure for the rear. Here is a pic of mine when I just raised the front to do the radiators

That's way easier than my floor jack method! Thanks for sharing I'll use that technique next time.
