Did all the reading I could out there (and yes, the IMS scares me - it will be done soon) and had the car inspected by Porsche and it passed with flying colors.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, My third post. I am looking at the gen 2 clusters for the 996 and quite like the LCD screens much better than what is in the 1999 996. I do see that the plugs are different, but I understand that the wires are all for the same things just different pin outs. is this right? Anyone out there done this? Are there other differences between the gen 1 and gen 2 clusters? Just wondering if the gen 2 cluster really is a nicer cluster like it seems in the pictures. Some background on me: You can find me on the Mustang Source forums under the same handle. I love tinkering and retrofitting and have done a lot in my Mustang, so I am not afraid to rip out dashboards and interiors, make wire harnesses, program and customize. I like it and it is fun. Nothing is more satisfying than to put something together, turn on the key and see that it actually works! This is my (my wife's actually) first ever Porsche. We bought it just after Christmas. Been looking for a while and checked out a few 996s and 997s and settled on this one. Did all the reading I could out there (and yes, the IMS scares me - it will be done soon) and had the car inspected by Porsche and it passed with flying colors. The tech said he had never seen such a nice example. Bought it and 2 days later it pissed out half the coolant on the garage floor. For the life of me I could not see where it was coming from even after jacking up the car and removing the driver's rear tire. I am not prepared to drop the engine and work on this in my freezing garage, so towed it back to a very surprised technician at Porsche. Turned out to be the air/oil separator.

POST 2Original post

One thing about this cluster is that it is for a Tip and I believe yours is a Manual correct?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No, ours is a tiptronic. The picture I used was just one I took from the internet, not a cluster I bought. I need more research before I go and get a cluster. I am certainly willing to be the pioneer on this, but considering how old these cars are, I can't believe that I am the first to want to try this. I just haven't found anything in my searches. Which, by the way, I hate the toggles. One thing I did to my 12 Mustang was add paddle shifters from a Mercedes to my car and got them to work. I want to do this to the Porsche.

POST 4Original post

There's a thread on here that shows how to fit AMG paddles to the steering wheel of a TipS. If it get the car i'm looking at, that will be a near term project, after fixing the maintenance items.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14740537

I did see that, lol! And they are the exact same paddles I used in my Mustang. I want to get the DCTMS flat bottom steering wheel and put paddles on it.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

"after fixing the maintenance items" Lol - I am in the same boat. Hoping the maintenance issues are not too many, as my wife and I have a long list of mods we want to do.

POST 7Original post

So I don't think you want to do this unless you know what you are doing. I have a 996.1 that I had to put in a .2 cluster since I put a a 997S engine in my car. The reason I had to put a new cluster is was because the new engine had variocam which is not compatible with the .1 cluster. So the fact that you are not changing the engine I don't think you will be able to make it work. You can call Charles Dundon at Dundon motorsports to get his opinion...he would know for sure.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If i can get the pin outs for the plugs i would have a pretty good idea . I don't suppose anyone on here has wiring diagrams?

POST 9Original post

Those are three separate snips of the cluster pins so there is some overlap between the pictures.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you! Am I looking at the pin outs for the gen 1 or 2?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nevermind. This is for gen 1 it looks like. So I need gen 2 now.

POST 12Original post

Yes...Gen 1. I don't have the cluster wiring diagram/pinouts for Gen 2.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is a start at least. Thank you! If the wires are all the same, just in different pin locations, then this is easy. But if there are all new or different pins or the circuits have different currents, then this ends right here, unfortunately.

POST 14Original post

I had to have my ABS pump replaced as well....I really think you should talk to someone who has done this....otherwise you will have a bunch of surprises on things you will have to change. I also had to change my HVAC control system....

POST 15Original post

I believe the Bentley book has both wiring diagrams/pinouts.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14741245

I am certainly hoping someone that has tried this will chime in. I am willing to experiment, though. In my 12 mustang I had to reprogram my PCM and change the ABS module, but nothing else. Hoping this may be just as simple. Bentley book?

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OMG!! Guess I'm still used to Mustang prices ...

POST 19Original post

LOL, yeah, I got mine for $150 on amazon. Not cheap but a good discount from the list price.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Don't suppose yours is gen 2? I could use the pinouts for the gen 2 cluster.

POST 21Original post

The 99-00 cluster is not a can bus unit. 2001+ has a LIN can bus. The 2002+ cluster has different plugs with 32 pins not 26 so you have to swap plugs and I believe the pins are slightly different too. The 2002+ cluster does not have analog input for inputs from the ABS and DME so many items will not work. I have ave done a few different conversions and have all the wiring pin outs and spread sheets. The only reason I convert and change anything is to run a 7.8DME for a vario cam plus engine swap. Items that hat have to be swapped together. DME ABS HVAC Cluster.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ah. So without making a module to interpret signals, this won't work. More then just changing pins and pin outs. Shame. I hate the displays in the gen 1s. Oh well. I have plenty of other project ideas for this car. Thank-you Charles for your insight into this. I might give you a ring later anyways in case?

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The DME - I assume this is the main computer module? Different acronyms for different car companies. This module changed as well between gen 1 and gen 2 then? Gen 1 module can't be reflashed?

POST 24Original post

Yes, thats the digital management for the engine. I think the easiest way to get the Gen 2 cluster will be to buy a gen 2 car. :-)

POST 26Original post

If you ever blow up your 3.4 and want to swap in a 3.6 or 3.8, the cluster swap becomes easier! If you have detailed questions its best to email me. [email removed] phone calls are ok just if the questions are detailed its best to get them in writing.
