Recently, about 4k miles ago I replaced the clutch, oil and some other minor maintenance.
Leading evidence: 'Replace clutch, oil and some other minor maintenance' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). my first step will be to check the shift linkage cables and then apply the wire ties as fpb111 has shown.

This could be a quick one to look for - inspect the cable mounting brackets.

Was the T/O bearing replaced along with the clutch?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
Longer story here, but, bear with me:
On Friday evening, my wife took our 1999 911 6-speed manual about 200 miles to a conference. The car was driving & shifting fine the entire trip, ~200 freeway miles. Recently, about 4k miles ago I replaced the clutch, oil and some other minor maintenance. For the last 4k miles - no issues...
My wife is a very good driver (knows how to drive a manual well).
When she got to her destination, after those 200 freeway miles, and into more city driving, all the forward gears stopped working, but, reverse worked fine. From speaking with her, it sounds like the forward gears won't engage at all...
So she's stuck up there until I come pick her up in a few days.
Since I have to go up there, I have 2 options:
1) Get the car towed to my garage right now (not too expensive but there may be a simple issue here?)
OR
2) See if there is a quick/simple fix when I get up there
My question to this forum is, what other information can I get remotely (without having my wife crawl under the car LOL) that may indicate the severity of the issue?
If the car needs a new trans, then I obviously will have it flat bedded home, but, if it is something simple like a linkage coming loose, then maybe I can bring a jack and do some hacks so it is at least freeway drive-able to get home.
Any suggestions welcome.
Regards,
Mike
Sorry about your fate. I don't know much about transmissions, but I got to believe it is something simple if you lost all gears at once....like a bad cable or something. However, if you need a new tranny from my 2000 996 with only 9K miles on it plus a great Giken Limited Slip that is currently listed on Rennlist classifieds if you are interested, though there is one guy ahead of you that I am talking to as we speak, but if that falls through and you need a tranny, we should talk.

Good luck with your car....hope it is an easy fix.
I've seen other threads where folks lose a certain range of gears (1,3,5, for instance,) and the solution is a broken or slipped shift cable retaining clip. This could be a quick one to look for - inspect the cable mounting brackets.
All
forward gears is interesting, are you positive your wife has tried all of the gears? Ask her to specifically try 2, 4, or 6.
With the history of recent clutch replacement My money is on shift cables slipped out of the retaining clips on the trans. Bring wire ties to reinforce the clips after you reseat the cables at the trans mounts.
Hi,
Yes -
all
forward gears are not working.
Just got more info : when she release the clutch (in a forward gear), some smoke that smells like burning rubber starts...
Mike
Did one of the axle shafts come off? I had it happen to me on a 928 with LSD and was a similar scenario. Does reverse work perfectly or just a bit of engagement?
Hi,
Would reverse then also not work? Wouldn't the clutch not engaging affect every gear?
Not disagreeing with you, just curious why reverse would work...
Thanks,
Mike
Theoretically yes, but when the the clutch burns out, depending on the degree of failure, the slippage is worse in the highest gear,6th, followed by 5th, 4th ect. Reverse being the last one to quit moving. The smoke and burning smell indicates clutch slippage.
Being able to select reverse and ANY forward gear indicates both shift cables are connected, and even if the cables are slipped out of the holder, causing the WRONG forward gear to be selected, the engine should simply stall while trying to move forward.
Ofcourse this synopsis/diagnosis is only as accurate as the degree of the accuracy of the information provided.
Update:
So I picked up the car today... and... it drove fine.
No shifting issues, all gears engaged well. I was able to drive it home ~200 miles with no problems.
But, there was a slight clutch burning smell when I stopped for gas, and, the clutch engagement feels different (softer).
My speculation is that when the car was towed from the parking lot where it wouldn't engage to our relatives driveway, something must have been "knocked back in".
Or, the fact that the car had sat for 4.5 days after the tow might have done something as well.
Last Friday (when this issue occurred), three people witnessed the car not engaging forward gears properly...
Its frustrating not to be able to reproduce the problem...
I'll get under the car this weekend... my first step will be to check the shift linkage cables and then apply the wire ties as fpb111 has shown.
Thanks.
Mike
Drain the trans fluid. If it doesn't look like JB Weld, then you probably just need a clutch job in order to install $2 worth of lube and $10 worth of parts.
