Is it okay to start it and let it run for a few minutes on the old oil or should I jack the car up and dump the oil cold?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Spring has sprung here (71 today) so starting to think about getting the car ready. Haven't driven it since last October and even though the oil has only about 1,000 miles on it, the last change was about a year ago. I want to change it before I drive it but wondering if I should change it cold without starting it prior or not. I'd normally let it get warm and then drive the car up on ramps to change it. The car is a '99 with 66K miles on original double row IMS bearing. Is it okay to start it and let it run for a few minutes on the old oil or should I jack the car up and dump the oil cold?

POST 2Original post

I'd run it. Either way you're going to be starting it with cold oil that hasn't circulated through the engine recently, so I don't think 1,000 miles on it makes a ton of difference, assuming it's a decent synthetic oil.

[QUOTE=Spork;14907721]Spring has sprung here (71 today) so starting to think about getting the car ready. Haven't driven it since last October and even though the oil has only about 1,000 miles on it, the last change was about a year ago. I want to change it before I drive it but wondering if I should change it cold without starting it prior or not. Incidentally I have the same year car with original IMS at 93000 miles. If it were mine I would drop the oil cold but overnight. Then use same make and type of oil as I used the last change. Save driving and enjoy. I use Mogul synthetic 5/40
