Be careful about replacing stock steering wheel with a too-small aftermarket unit.

Matt apparently thought he should have been exempt from this rule and ran flat out, basically talking smack about the event and how he is such an experienced racer he should be able to run wide open.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I really enjoyed the interview ,until the 996 gets bashed, yea i get it its not air cooled, and its not increasing in value, etc, but for Farrah and Randy Nonnenberg to say its the worst porsche, you know the one you buy to say you have a porsche, what pretentious bull****,,in all fairness, they do say what a great value the 996 is for the money, and they are talking car values and sales. But after watching Matt Farah drive some 996s on his One Take series, and commenting to some degree how much he enjoyed them,to hear them pronounce that they are the WORST porsche is a shame considering there platforms in the car world, and the fact that he now drives a 1987 911,you dont think those things had any problems do you! for instance, 01: Watch for leaking brake master cylinders.
02:
Flexible fuel line that runs from tank to engine can rot and leak, even causing fire.
03:
Heater blower motors tend to fail.
04:
Targa tops leak if seals aren’t in peak condition; replacement is expensive. If ignored, this can cause rust in floorpans. Keep an eye on coupe sunroof seals, too, for the same reasons.
05:
Engine oil return tubes may leak on 1984-1986 models.Engines in good shape will still consume a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so. The engine’s dry sump holds 13 quarts.
06:
Talk about old-fashioned: a mid-1980s car that still requires a valve adjustment every 15,000 miles. Major services are every 30K.Alternators can fail in 40,000-50,000 miles, overcharging batteries and/or melting wires. Watch for surging power accessories, lights. Replacement costs about $300 plus labor.
07:
Fuchs-style 15-inch wheels standard; 16-inch optional. 16s standard in 1989.
08:
Carreras rot most in floorpans and around doorsills, but rocker panels and suspension pickup points are other places to check. These conditions are more prevalent in Targas and Cabriolets. Anti-corrosion measures improved on 1987-1989 Carreras.
09:
Be careful about replacing stock steering wheel with a too-small aftermarket unit. This accentuates bumpsteer and already-heavy feel.
10:
Don’t worry about a car that’s riding too low in the back; the torsion bars are adjustable.
11:
Hydraulic clutch introduced in 1987 suffered teething issues. Fixes now well known by dealers and specialists, and updates will cure the problem. 1987-1989 clutches may rattle if rpm is too low on takeoff. This is normal. Replace the rear crankshaft seal during a clutch job. The part is inexpensive and labor is minimal once the transaxle and engine are separated.
Expect To Pay
Disappointing to hear Farrow bash the 996. Just more bandwagon BS. When I see sh*t like this I pull up Jethro Bovingdons Drivetribe vid (

) to remind myself how great these cars really are. Its fine if folks want to reminisce about the air cool cars, but the 996 is better in every way. To the folks that think the 996s front end is not pretty, maybe its not quite as nice as a 993, but in my opinion the 964 that came before it looks bloated, ugly and slow, yet they command crazy $$. To drive a 996 on a curvy road is some of the best fun you can have.
Never been a fan of Matt Farrah. To me, he comes across as a bit of a arrogant d-bag with no real credentials to back it up. I think he is better at self promotion and making YouTube videos than he is at actually reviewing cars. I can usually get about halfway through his videos before I switch it off.
The biggest turn off is when he ran the Silver State Classic (120 miles of open road dessert racing). All first time rookie drivers are limited to the 100MPH class. After your first run then you can enter any class you want. Matt apparently thought he should have been exempt from this rule and ran flat out, basically talking smack about the event and how he is such an experienced racer he should be able to run wide open.
I've enjoyed some of his videos, but he comes off like a dbag. He is just on the anti 996 bandwagon. When he drove the cars he clearly enjoyed them.
As an aside, the Petrolicious channel is the best on YouTube.
Its been 20 years since the intro of the 996. Driving new cars for free at no cost often ruins the analytical abilities and skews those of a once regular car guy. Its no big deal but realize these guys are playing with OPM. I am not. I also love key to mentally compare my cars to what else was available at the time. I also consider more subtle things look or how I feel about a car and how it responds to my controls etc. And of course since this is a hobby I place a large value on performance per dollar. And thats another part of it, different cars for different folks. Some people swear by carburetors. I hate them and prefer using a computer to diagnose my engine.
Same here. My biggest annoyance is just how lacking in vocabulary and eloquence his reviews are. Yet TST podcasts are 1.5-2 hours long, going off on sidebar conversations with his buddies about topics most people wont know about.
Let him put down the 996. Just about everyone else in the business thinks otherwise.
This guy has always just been a fat pretentious d bag gas bag, lol............thought that since the first time i saw him, has nothing to do with him bashing 996s. Who really cares what he says? Hes an average or below average basic car guy knowledge at best but somehow parlayed this into making money now and being a "celebrity"? oh well. Some 8yr old made $11mil last year by reviewing toys on youtube and insta hoes are making millions off posting pics of their fat asses. its the world we live in. Rant over. Btw, does this Matt guy actually have any actual car industry education, training, knowledge, experience, etc?
In the first video, he said "the inputs are kind of weird". Yep it's a rear engine, supposed to be different. And the comment saying you buy it just to say you have a Porsche, there are lots of Porsche's cheaper than the 996 to take that role 924/944/968/928/Boxster/Cayenne.
He's a douche.
