Your 2 year old engine filter needs to be changed with a Porsche OE filter.

Couple questions; are you running an aftermarket air filter?

The TBN is going to be good (assumed) when running a quality product and changing it every year, and 3-5,000 miles.

I had planned on buying my own UOA lab equipment and do the testing on site, but with these bulk test kits I might not have to do that for a couple of years.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

People get something for free, and that's still not good enough.
Nice to see a UOA with low levels of iron, alluminum & high Zinc (>1200ppm).
Posting this in the UOA thread may elicit more attention and keep our repository of UOAs in the same place
. I'm planning to start within the year.
Here you go. Lots of good information and other UOAs to compare to. I'm surprised the RND UOA didn't include TBN. Is this the free version that comes with a case of oil?
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...alysis-12.html
So I finally heard back from customer service at RND Euro. Apparently TBN measurements aren't included with the free oil analysis that is included with a purchase of DT40. They stated that I could normally pay extra to get it but that my sample had already been disposed of by the laboratory.
Is not knowing your TBN a big deal?
TBN Total Base Number tells you how much protection additives are left in the oil, protection degrades as your mileage increase. i never like to see less than 6 TBN.
Yeah I was a little miffed. RND Euro should at least have a disclaimer on their site that TBN isn't included and/or you can pay to have it performed if you want it...
Most every lab charges more for TBN, Blackstone is a good example. The kits from LN Engineering DO include the TBN, as standard.
See, this is why I don't sell parts, and pretty much hate selling anything... People get something for free, and that's still not good enough. My recommendation to RND has been to do away with the free UOA option completely, rather than making the disclaimer that TBN is not included with the FREE UOA. Its been nice referring my engine customers to RND to buy their oil, so we don't have to deal with selling it, and none of them have complained about the free UOA.
Sorry Jake, I'm a fan of the work you do and your insights for the 996 community, but if there are caveats to a deal then they should be laid out for the customer to see. A simple, no cost, tiny disclaimer solves everything.
In my eyes, the analysis wasn't free because I paid more to buy the oil from RND than the usual source that I purchase from. To be fair though, even the analysis without the TBN is a good deal.
It's not a big deal, but customers should be aware. And if RND Euro isn't going to do it via their sales site, then maybe my post on this forum will. In fact, it might just prevent another customer having a wtf moment down the road, which I'd think would be viewed as a good thing.
Well, considering that you were receiving commentary from someone who actually builds M96 engines, and knows what the wear metals are, thats even more true. Its not some generic statement from a random guy that doesn't even own a tool box.
When RND started doing this, the only way they could make it work was to buy a given UOA set of parameters from ALS in bulk. They do not offer a TBN based kit in bulk, but honestly no one at ALS stated this, so nothing was posted on the RND site. Until some samples started coming in the issues became apparent, and you were the first person to ask about TBN.
I have told RND that I'll buy their bulk UOA kits, so they don't have to worry about dealing with it anymore. I had planned on buying my own UOA lab equipment and do the testing on site, but with these bulk test kits I might not have to do that for a couple of years.
OK, back on topic.
Isla, good looking report. Couple questions; are you running an aftermarket air filter? When have your last change your air filter? Your silicone looks high. Might need to re-think this area.
Next time you fill out your UOA paperwork, get the mileage correct on the engine (unit) and the oil. They should not be the same. Unless this car really only had 5,257 miles on the odo.
Oh, and I think paying anything for a TBN is a complete waste of time & money. I say this becuase most here (like me) are changing thier oil waayyyy before they really need to (smart). So the TBN is a moot point. In other words, we are NOT looking to extend our drain intervals to the max (which the TBN will help you monitor) but WE ARE looking to extend our motors. The TBN is going to be good (assumed) when running a quality product and changing it every year, and 3-5,000 miles. *Race oils and race cars different caes.
Jake I'm sorry if I have offended you. It was not my intention. I would have happily paid for the TBN reading if I had known that it isn't included but that it was available for a bit more. I think others would probably do the same so a simple disclaimer indicating the availability of this option might be a way for RND Euro to make a few more bucks on each kit.
For what it's worth, my dream has been to buy another, low mileage 1999 996 one day and have your shop bullet-proof it. I hope this discussion hasn't jeopardized that. Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy the holidays.
LexVan, I do not have an aftermarket intake and the filter is clean and less than 2 years old. The person who did the analysis didn't seem concerned by the number as he/she indicated that it was satisfactory.
I believe I filled out the report form with my car's mileage as well as the mileage on the oil. I still have record of that in my maintenance logbook so I'm not sure how it's relevant to the analysis?
Isla, your silicone is high. Your 2 year old engine filter needs to be changed with a Porsche OE filter.
What is the car's total mileage? Your form was filled out wrong. Does your car have 5,300 miles? 53,000 miles?? Or 530,000 miles??? Yes, it matters to your UOA.
