Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

They'd clean, disassemble, inspect, reseal that thing for probably $300.

You know your car's rack, you know that it wasn't in an accident, run low on fluid, contaminated with debris from a failed pump, etc.

Also, is it absolutely necessary to use PWIS to calibrate the steering for the ABS.

Spyerx, I was wondering if you had the name of the shop for future use since I'm in the SoCal area.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Was under the car yesterday doing some work and discovered that my steering rack is leaking hydraulic fluid. Given that it's a race car, I'm not going to replace it with a brand new Porsche unit for $2,600, but I would like to go with a high-quality OEM or equivalent reman unit. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Also, is it absolutely necessary to use PWIS to calibrate the steering for the ABS. My car is a 99 non-PSM car. I had a look at the Bentley manual and it doesn't mention that this is required.
Any advice from anyone that has been through this would be appreciated.
If mechanically the rack is fine, why not just have it resealed?
I'm on the other coast but there is a great little shop near me that ALL they do is steering racks and CVs/drive shafts. They'd clean, disassemble, inspect, reseal that thing for probably $300.
I was considering that, too. I found this shop in an archived thread offering a two-year warranty on their rebuilds. $200 after core charge is pretty cost effective.

If possible one is better off having his car's steering rack rebuilt vs. just exchanging it for a rebuilt one based on a core from another car.

I'm sure there are dozens. Several shops I know use these guys. i've had them rebuild 2 sets of CV axles for me for porsches. Last set I dropped off at 8am and they were done by 1pm same day.

Just revising this thread. I would like to know if anyone with a C4S has been able to remove the steering rack without removing the front axles. Looks kinda tight in there. Thanks.
