The harness is repairable, but rather than risk the potential for surprises in the future (other wires that aren't as obvious), I'd rather see if I can locate a good used harness that doesn't have chewed wires.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, I recently picked up a 2000 911 Carerra (996) 2 wheel drive that amongst its other ills has had many wires in the rear interior harness chewed by rodents. The harness is repairable, but rather than risk the potential for surprises in the future (other wires that aren't as obvious), I'd rather see if I can locate a good used harness that doesn't have chewed wires. The wire harness I'm referencing is the the one on the interior rear of the car that plugs into the relays and DME. Does anyone either know the answer, know where to find this harness in the fiche, or know the part numbers so I can cross reference? As I search around for one at a good price, I have seen some reasonable deals on Carerra 4 harnesses. My gut tells me that they should be the same, since it is unrelated to the front drive, and a relatively small volume manufacturer like Porsche is unlikely to want to deal with the logistics of two part numbers for a chassis component like this. However, I haven't been able to find the part numbers to cross reference. Thanks in advance!

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just to close the loop a little bit, here's what I learned. I have a 2000 Carerra, and I picked up a wiring harness from a 2001 Carerra 4. In a connector by connector, wire by wire comparison, I found that all of the connectors and wires present in the Carerra harness were present in the Carerra 4 harness, same color coded wires, same pin location. This should work well for me. However, there were additional pins in some of the connectors, additional harnesses, additional plugs/wires in the Carerra 4 harness. I haven't tracked down what they are exactly, but I suspect that it may be related to the stability management (PSM) that came standard on the Carerra 4, but is absent from my base Carerra. There seems to be an additional plug in the DME area for what I suspect to be the PSM brain; an entire additional harness branching off the middle of the rear seat area with an orange six pin connector; an additional harness connector at the driver B pillar (my car has two large rectangular multi-pin connectors, this one has three of them). Plus some other extra pins in the other two connectors at the B pillar plugs that I do have (additional pin locations probably not that important, but I do have pictures if anyone is super curious). I'm scouring the EWD in the Bentley manual now, just because I am curious. I'll give a full report once I get everything reinstalled and running, but at this stage of the project, it looks like the C4 harness is compatible within the same model range Carerra (in my case both have Bosch Motronic 7.2). (However, if you have a C4, the base Carerra harness probably isn't going to have the parts you need). One other thing, and this may be obvious, but for the faint of heart, you need to remove all of your interior carpets, front and rear, your center console, shift cables, ebrake, etc. It is a pretty involved project - not difficult, but if you plan to do it without breaking things so you can reinstall everything, you're going to want to read up, plan ahead, and take your time. For me this wasn't a big deal, I've stripped cars to convert them into race cars, and have torn Porsche interiors apart. That and the fact that mice had taken up residence in my interior and left all kinds of gifts and damage - much of it invisible until I had the interior removed - chewed padding, nests, waste, more chewed wires. As a result, my carpets were in dire need of replacement (another project I'm tackling thanks to the generosity of a RLer who is selling me all of his spare interior bits). By the way, with the interior stripped out, the car looks like a proper (race) car. So tempting to leave it out, throw in a cage and make it a dedicated track car...

I cant give you a definitive answer, but I know the C4 went to the motronic 7.2 DME before the C2 did. This may have been because of the psm requirements. Obviously if you've got more wires than you need in the harness you can just ignore the unused ones. The other way around - not so good.

I have a friend who parted out a 99 996 C2 and I believe still have complete harness if you are interestedly

Thanks. if I'm remembering what I read in the Bentley, the C4 had Bosch DME v 7.2 and EGas first (1999?) and the C2 switched from 5.x and cable throttle to 7.2 and EGas in 2000. I think the easiest thing for me to do is disconnect the spare harness, and ignore the extra pins and connectors. The only penalty is added weight of the extra bits, and as a street car, it is pretty irrelevant.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The extra harness had a paper tag on it, with part number 996.612.065.01. A quick search suggests that this is a part of the automatic rollbars or hydraulic pump on the Cabrio. If that is correct, this harness must have come from a C4 cab.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
