At 48 it was the best decision I made and am completely in love with the car!

I started looking at 997:s but then I ran into this mint red 996 4S.

I set a goal a few years ago to own a 911 before I turned 50.

This would have been cool except that suddenly there were a bunch of Israelites and the Egyptian army all walking through the braking session and across the finish line, which screwed up timing for that entire run group.

Been buying (and selling ) these cars for over 50 years, probably 30-35 total, and I can report that for $15-18k for an early 996 it is probably the best deal ever.

Bought my first 996 new at age 31 and just added to my German collection (Touareg and Passat) a 2nd 996, a dedicated track car at 41..aiming for a 997 GT3 in 2 years.
Got mine this spring at 24; basically rebuilt it mechanically (cosmetics were fine) over the course of 3 months, got it back on the road just after I turned 25.
With the price of early 996's being ad low as they are I would have expected the age of 996 owners to be younger than what they are. 46% of the people who voted here are over 40. I my self am 35
I didn't realize that this thread was full of kids. How about this. I received my first Porsche (996) as an early 70th birthday present 30 months ago. I will be 72 in a weeks time 9th October. I have been admiring the 911 Porsche since they first came out back in 63 when I was 22 years of age. I must be the oldest 911 owner on rennlist unless someone says differently.
I got my first Porsche (a 944) at age 29. That was followed by another 944, then a 944S2 Cab, then a Cayman S at age 44, and finally my 996 this year at age 47.
37% are over 50 at this point. I was not expecting that.....maybe some bias due to the forum member's typical demographics as well. Hurdi, at 72 you rock the top end for sure !
I retired in May (age 56) and bought my car in August. I don't think I'd have had much time to enjoy it when I was working.
One possible explanation of the older demographic is that the affordable price of the 996 makes it an easy addition to the family fleet. For a younger owner, the 996 may be their daily driver. For older owners, it's a pleasure car. My wife and I are in that second group and have three cars ... her DD, my DD, and the 996.
Which begs the question of another poll ... what % of 996's are daily drivers?
Just thinking. I was 22 years of age when the 911 came into production in 1963. You young dudes were not even born then, or if you were, you were not old enough to drive one. BTW I intend to be still driving this car when I am 90 haha. I will not be changing it for any other. UNLESS I WIN THE LOTTERY and buy the latest fastest PORCHE 911. I never get old. I ride mountain bike, kayak, scuba dive, fly a plane, swim a lot, and go to the local rec centre. That's when I am not causing havoc on this page or driving my 911.
First Porsche at 21, 15th at 67 (996). Along the way xke, xk120, lancia scorpion, rx-7 race car, Alfa 2600, AMG, Austin Healy 3000, MGA, etc. Over 100 cars but always a Porsche as daily driver.
I bought my 70 911s in 1978 when I was 28. Now almost 40 years later I'm going to pull the trigger soon on a TT. A lot of life's ups and downs have passed in that time. Now at 62 it is time to have some fun. Still have the need for speed and LOVE to drive. So much fun now knowing that I have the cash in my pocket to find my dream car.
Purchased at 38 and counting... I come from a family of savers, so it took some time to realize the one who dies with the most cash and no Porsche is simply an idiot
... I'll be driving Porsches from now on... Carpe Diem and keep the rubber side down my friends!
Great to hear all the stories about those that joined the pcar club as a 'reward'..My first Porsche is the 996 I have now (at 41), and although I have only had it for a year and a half, I know there will be be more in the future...
First 911 at age 20 (was born a slave to cars) First 996 at 51 and added another at age 56. Stopped paying the son's tuition after his first year because of abysmal performance. He was quite pissed and loved to complain that he had to take student loans while his Dad drove to work in a Porsche. That's right kid, "work" being the operative word.
He came home tonight for a family dinner and I couldn't help but to fire a mild shot. Student loans, failed to get a degree, carrying debt, but oh lookee here, a brand new Gold iPhone.
I'm paying two college tuitions right now. Fortunately my sons are taking it quite seriously and they are getting excellent grades. I paid cash for my C4S when I bought it, but the tuition payments are currently preventing me from upgrading. I'll see how the 991 C4S market looks in a couple of years. Probably.
61, got the 00 996 at 59 a couple of months before 60.
I did not see it as a 60th gift but my wife saw it that way. Lucky for me she always liked Porsches and so did I. So far so very good!
bought my first porsche a 1980 sc at 29. Sold it when my son was born and original owner wanted it back
Bought a boxster s at 34 then sold it a year later when the twins arrived.
Bought a C4S at 37, told my wife it was the perfect car to carry three kids. It is!!!
Bought my 944 at age 27 then bought my 996 four years ago at 35. Have to upgrade to a bigger home soon and once that is done then I'll set my sights on the next P-car.
Bought my first 911 a -78 Targa when I was 22. Just recently bought a 996 Targa for my wife at the age of 48 :-) My own weekend car is a Ferrari 430 Scuderia.
Bought my first 996 c2 cab at the age of 25 as birthday gift from me to me then my current 03 c2 coupe right before I turned 30 as an early gift. Wife had found the car and wanted to buy it for my birthday but I couldn't wait another month so I jumped on it. Ill be 32 in april.
I purchased my first P-car on my birthday six or seven years ago - and traded that car ('03 986) in on my 996. It's the gift that keeps on giving. I just ticked over to 43...
If the poll had a few more decades at the older end I would feel younger now.
My first Porsche at 55. I'm not too old to firewall the throttle. I am old enough to appreciate suspension on my daily commute.
I purchased my first Porsche in 1973 at age 27 a new 914 2.0. The following year, I traded it in for a 1974 911S. Since that time I've had another 914, a 1982 928 and a 1991 928 S4. I bought my current 996 in 2009 at the tender age of 63
Bought at 40, (42 now) should have come around sooner, but was not the right time and no $$ then. My 8 year old has already offerred my $5k for my 99 Cab when he turns 16. Wonder if in 8 years that will be the going rate anyway?
My 40th AE was my 40th birthday present to myself in 2011. I hit 42 last month. First Porsche, have dreamed of one since I was 12 and was finally able to find the right one at the right time.
Bought my first porsche when I was 21. A 944 Turbo and quickly learned that just bcuz you can afford to buy it doesn't mean you can afford to maintain it. After running it into the ground, I sold it to my bro who spent $$ to bring it back up to mint. I vowed not to get a sweet car until I can afford to maintain it as well. I bought my 996 turbo 2 years ago at 36 and it has been heaven ever since. I am looking at a 07gt3 but the wifey says we need a bigger house. I am hoping to go shopping again in about 3 years or so.
At 29 but just turned 30 2 days ago............

I think the best time to have one if money allows is before you have kids when you're in your 20's or 30's. After that it can get a bit harder with more responsibilities and when practicality gets in the way.
I'm very blessed to be one of the fortunate ones like others on here.
LOL - makes me realize how blessed I am or how insane both my wife and I are. When debating on buying the C4S for cash; the better use of the money was to put it into the house. I was trying really, really hard to be practical until my wife said "you can't drive a house and I know your true love is to drive, so just buy the GD thing and get it over with". So I did.
Im 37, have four kids ages 3 to 15 (2 boys/2 girls) and this car has been not only practical but a blast for the family. My wife asks for rides all the time. It all depends on your family's perspective. I hope to have other models of the Porsche in my possession into my 50s.
That's one of the reasons why I bought the 911 over an NSX so that I can take my two kids and the wife to various places. Still it can only extend "practical" to a limited level.
First 911 was a 69 911T while stationed in Italy in the early 80's. Was about 27ish if memory serves me well... Fast forward through 2 kids graduated from college and semi retired... Current 02 C4S was a gift on my 50th birthday from my wife of 32 years! That was 5+ years ago! Have been tempted a few times to trade up to a 997 but there's just something special I like about this 996...
Just picked up my first Porsche yesterday. I've wanted a 911 for as long as I can remember. It's a 2002 911 Cabrio, not my first choice, but was traded-in where I work so I got a good deal. Hopefully this will be the start of a long, long time of Porsche ownership.
Absolutely true, but it might be even worse than that. When I was 26 and conspiring to own a Porsche, a 60-year-old co-worker that had just bought an '06 Cayman pulled me aside and told me to go get the car I wanted right now because he realized that he waited too long and that he would have enjoyed it a lot more in his 20s than he did in his 60s.
I took his advice.
I enjoy my Porsche 996 today
as much or more than when I had my first 911S at age 28. When I am getting on the freeway, going through the gears is like a shot of
Sildenafil Citrate
Got mine 7 years ago at 59. Bought first 911 at 23. A 1966 with the Solex carbs. 2 years later I also had a 1969 911E Targa. Sold the fun at 26 to get married and waited 34 years for the 996 Targa.
First flat 6 - 1966 Corvair Corsa. Just imagine what the Corvair could have been without the Camaro.

Bought my first Porsche in my early 20s, and purchased my 996 last December at 52. There have been a lot of ground between them.
I am about to make my last tuition payment for my daughter's undergraduate degree through cash flow, and in a few years, when the finances recover, I shall buy another.
First Porsche I was 17, in 1970. ( 1967 912)
More 912's , then a 911t
A 911e
In 1984 got a 1973 911s
Skipped 20 years in 2004 got the 2001 996
Of all the cars the 996 is the best
I'm 55.
-Started w/ aircooled VW's at age 14 in 1972.
-First Porsche was a '67 911 in '83.
- '78 924 when I went to pilot training in '85
- '87 944S in '92
- '90 944S2 cabriolet in '94(still have)
then a '70 91 project
- grabbed up 3 '84 928S cars as ongoing projects (still have all 3 in various stages of resto)
Started on 986 Boxsters- buy one, pay it off, keep it, buy another. Now have 4
Bought my '99 996 w/ aerokit this past fall
Snagged a '71 914 two weeks ago.
I have no wife, no kids, a good job and a big shop.
I have a blast w/ my 996 and Boxsters and will snag another 996 this spring.
10 total P-cars in the stable. 6 are drivers, 4 being restored.
I'm a happy guy!
Feel very luck to own my 'poster' car; only able to own it because I do ALL my own wrenching, lots of hard work(and a lot more to come!), and a very supportive family.
I will have to make it out to one of the GTA G.T.G. this year!
Regards,
Rob
Staggerwing... you beat me by 3 years. I also play the 5 string banjo as well and have a private single engine flying license. What is it with us old farts? We have more get up and go than most 20 year olds hahaha. So my 72years oldest 911 owner has tumbled dammit lol.
Oh and thumbs up for RBC123 at 70years of age. Now dont tell me you do all your own DIY work on your 911 (as I do).. Can I hold that record please? hahaha. The oldest DIY 911 owner?
I learned I was unable to maintain a 928, so got a 986. I had to wait until my last of my three boys moved out of the house to get my upgrade. Utility, water, licenses', cars, insurance, money here and there, and basically feeding three boys was expensive. Now, all over 18 years of age and time for them to struggle on their own, while Dad drives a Carrera. lol
Age 47.
Well definitely a motorhead/DIY guy since a teen as relative to our domestic vehicles & then street rods , bikes, go carts, & Rotax engines, but, a Porsche mechanic ?, I'll leave that honor to you as I'm still trying to educate myself but have done a few things so far. Here's a pic of my home made magnetic metal detector--much easier to lose a half pint of oil & wipe inside of filter housing for a check rather than draining 11 qts to look at a plug. Did you ever try to totally remove metal debris from one of these plugs ?
These magnets are super powerful !
http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=ZB8
I pop riveted them on thru the c'sunk .12 holes w/ the flange part of the rivet towards the filter.
Be very carefull handling these individually & keeping them at least a foot apart as they will travel quite a distance & @ a high velocity to connect to each other damaging fingers &/or shattering themselves.
My apologies for detouring this thread
Bought my Anniversary Edition at 26 a month ago. Absolutely love it. First car at 16 was 944 S...2 turbos and a 914 later, I got the 911! Thanks for passing the Porsche bug dad. Ugh
Ps. Mine is my daily driver as well but I often drive the wife's TDI just to keep the miles and gas bill down.
Nice to see some younger blood ! 65% or so > 40 years old in the poll. Perhaps this is more representative of the rennlist demographic than the 996 crowd in general.
Haha that reminds me of my first PCA event. I literally had the president come up to me and tell me he was glad I was there so I can continue on the legacy and blood lines of the porsche club because he said "all us old farts wont be here too much longer."
Dude... I just met you...
Bought my C4S in December, I'm 27...wanted a 911 since I was about 6 when I sat in a 2.7RS. From now on there will always be some variant of 911 in my garage!
Just bought mine a bit over a week ago at 24.
Not sure when I started wanting a 911, but I do think I figured out what started it. Old RC car that would go strait forward and turn when in reverse... I think it was a white 964 Targa to be exact looking back. Wonder if it's still in my closet at my parents house?
I bought my 996tt at 35, but have owned a 986 since 23. I didn't think i would be able to out do the 986, now im unsure if ill ever own a car better than the tt.
52, my fourth Porsche.
Irony is, I bought my 996 after a rough cancer diagnosis (melanoma) and all that impending doom. I've been on 3x weekly Interferon injections, the medicine is not nice. I should finish in June. When I bought my 996 from the long-time 2nd owner, we discovered that he had cancer as well and that was why he bought it too. He was actually on the clinical trials of the Interferon. The car is magnificent and serves as a very nice distraction from an ugly dx/treatment. I've had some great cars previously, but wanted a good 911 all my life.
Bought my first 6gt3 over 10 years ago. Now at 37years old back for another one! And is a lucky owner of a 6rs! I'll save that so my kids can enjoy it as well.
3rd Porsche. 03 c4cab.
I am a sprite 73...
First unit was a 53 356 with the v in the windshield.
Second was a 56 speedster.
40 yrs between second and third.
Bought mine January 22, 2014. I was 33. 2004 C2.
Ever since reading an Autoweek article about the 996 GT3, I've wanted a 996 of some variety. I looked for over a year for this car, and love every minute of it.
I am almost 72 in a month and bought it last month, a 2000 Coupe, to track, 64k miles, no apparent IMS/RMS fix or issue. One track day already and see it has light valve cover/cam cover leak naturally on the headers.
Retiring my 89 930 from track duty since Hagerty says it is valuable. Also have a 996 GT2 in the Stable to chase ZR1's and a Healey to Chase MGC's. The 996 GT2 and the 930 don't leak, but the Healey likes to mark its spot everywhere it covers, which is normal for a Brit car.
By the way, the car has PSM and it screwed up late braking. Various opinions to leave on or off on the track. Never had it before and I am leaning to leaving it off. Any thoughts out there?
33 now, so going down this path. Not sure I want to go back to driving any other car.
Not sure I'd want a track car, but there is another 911 in the future once this one is paid off and we build a bigger garage.
I bought mine @ 33 years old. I anticipate I will at some point dedicate this one as a track car and buy a 997 when they drop to low 20's. I anticipate I will be in my 40's by then.
40 for the 996; the bottom of the list started at 20. Very good ride thus far
Only regret is not keeping them all, trying to avoid selling them now adays. I junped from car to car in the past out of boredom.
I was 18 and in high school when my dad brought home a 911 SC Weissach. He was an executive at VW at the time and he got these loaner cars every now and again.
My brother and I took that car out for a test drive on our favorite local twisty road and we were both blown away. I don't know that we ever really got it out of third gear but it seemed to like diving into corners and was very happy at 90 miles an hour. Well above the local posted speed limit.
Needless to say from then on I was hooked. And I was certain that the car of my dreams was the 911 and one day I would own one.
That day came true in 1999 when I bought my '88 911 coupe.
She now shares the garage with her new sibling a 2003 996 with the X51 package.
At 55 I'm a happy chappie. And my wife thinks it's great. Life's good. :cheers
After being a BMW guy for years, took the plunge on an 02 996 TT that I purchased from a forum member last fall. At 48 it was the best decision I made and am completely in love with the car!
What does it matter? There are octogenarians who still have all of their faculties and twenty year olds who don't and never will have.
Drive and enjoy, if you need a common denominator, join a club; if you don't, drive the sh*t out of it!

After too many vws to count in my 20s , I had a couple rebuilt 914 motors on the bench .
I traded one of them for a 914 with a red body ,2 green doors and a black bonnet .
I built a hot 2.2 type iV motor after that
And was planning on putting it in a karmen ghia with an upright fan conversion .
And I found a 62 356 with no interior or motor .
The 2.2 went in that .
A couple 944s and a 928 came and went in the lifespan of milk . We rebuilt a 3.2 911 but sold it as soon as it came out of the paint shop.
I had a heap of other german stuff after that , mercedes 6 cylinder sedans , an Audi all road , vw syncro , 5 kombis .
Then still loving boxer engines I got into subarus .
But 15 months ago I got my 996 .
I'm 44 now , going to enjoy it for some years to come .
At least until a 2009 911s 997 can be had for under $40k
I was content with my ford truck ,had it for 15 years .Took early retirement at age 50 .I was hit by drunk driver last august, truck rolled four times and was destroyed.I had to make a choice always wanted a porsche but had the boats ,kids ,etc it was never a viable option .So at 63 years old ,I did it ,couldn't be happier .Kids grown ,boats gone just me and a girlfriend ,great car.I still have my Harley and late model subaru when we take my big rottweiler ,the 996 is my daily driver I just wish my rott would fit in it ,my only complaint.
61. First Porsche (944) when I was 40. The 996 is much more fun to drive.
Total of 39 cars over 44 years. Was blessed to have grown up when first generation muscle cars were cheap. I'd give my left nut if I could have all of them back....
Wow, 60% of 996 owners are >40 years old in the poll of almost 500 rennlisters. . I always thought the low $ entry p-car would attract a younger crowd? Or maybe this poll is biasted by the demo that frequent this board in general.
The Porsche (our first & hopefully last!) found us last year I was 51 my Wife 53. Every one thought mid-life crisis. But we had been planning it for some years and had been looking at XKr's and old Triumph TR's before we got the Porsche illness / fever.
Glad we did and no cure now
O_Sr
I have had 17 Porsches (if you count the 5 914's), all of the rest have been of the "911 family". At the present time we have a 99 and a 2001TT. The 996's are by far the best Porsches I have owned. I will be 68 in a couple of weeks.
Keep On Driving!!!
Bought my avatar 356 in 65, my C2 996 in 98 and still driving it pretty much daily. Lots of other cars in between... Bought my GTS croc as a 70th bday gift to myself. 😎
^very interesting ownership story & others as well
03 C2 purchased at 34, first Porsche. Old Saab Turbos, a Z06 and a 350z were my gateway drugs. Nothing quite matches the balanced experience of the 911. Quiet road trip in comfort, date nights, work on nice days, canyon runs, even track if the opportunity arises. Not out of place in any situation.
The graph that the poll results make is very interesting. I suspect there are a fair number of people here with a 996 that are the original owner, and certainly there are plenty of new owners such as myself that are here because these cars have become so affordable.
I started a similar thread about length of ownership and there were only a few of us that are original owners left. I was kinda surprised at the number of longer term (5+ years) owners though I figured it would be smaller than it was.
Polls like this, however, are kind of broken in my opinion. I know I've aged a bit since I originally voted/answered and the results don't really reflect that.
Yeah I guess that's a bright side.
Though the realization that I'll probably be here and still posting when I cross that threshold is a little less bright...
God I need a life...
First Porsche was 1969 911T which I had for several years until I married, had to sell the Porsche for down payment on first house. Owned a lot of British cars after that, then got in in racing water cooled VW's in the 80's, then had kids so racing was put on back burner. Never thought I would own a Porsche again. Last year started looking for an older sports car to mess was considering buying an early Boxster, then came upon 1999 C2 and a deal I couldn't pass up. Purchased it last summer and I couldn't be happier having a Porsche again. Born 1947. Xx
I still think we need a semi-monthly meetup. That way you can pretend to be socially active and doing things when it's basically just a way to talk behind the backs of everyone else on Rennlist!
Yeah, though there's surprisingly few younger people. I'd have expected the age distribution to skew that way in recent years, given the relative affordability of buy-in. Maybe they're all getting Caymans or M3s.
I am 28 and had dreamed of owning my 996 911 since they came out. I always said I would have one before 30 (also said that about a kid but that is still gonna wait awhile lol) and just purchased mine 5 months ago and couldn't be more thankful. It truly is a dream
I actually went to work today for a change so I won't be home until around 7 I expect.
Other than a mid-morning appointment tomorrow I'll be around tomorrow though.
I have to swing by the store on the way home tonight, should I pick you up Bud?
So what you are saying is your senility is why you haven't hung that picture up after 5 months?
I guess advanced age also brings with it certain other functional issues which explains your need for a big red Turbo to compensate with...

Yeah I had a few friends make the midlife crisis joke when I bought the 996, which I still don't understand. I'm 24, I hope this isn't "midlife". Just a sports car.
kudos to all the young whippersnappers buying Porsches under 30.
I'm too pragmatic, I waited till I could pay cash and have enough money to fix anything that went wrong with it without crying about it or impacting any other area of my life. Some of you young fellas probably make more money than me though.
I call my mid-life crisis more of a mid-life awakening, realizing I can't take my money wiht me when I die and that I'm only here for a shoprt while so I better have some fun while I'm on the right side of the dirt.
To that end I got into the vehicles most likely to put me on the wrong side of the dirt, sport bikes. 8 years riding sport bikes and an escalating trail of 4 wheeled toys and I'm still at it.
I definitely agree. I had the realization that these cars are probably as affordable as they'll ever be, and the age of sports cars as most of us know them has definitely come to an end with the advent of turbos on every new 911. There are also so many near-pristine examples of these cars that are going on the market after sitting mostly unused for a decade. I am 27 now, paid less for my 996 targa than I did my WRX, for a much more reasonable vehicle that is naturally aspirated, rear wheel drive, with a clutch.
I feel like I can responsibly enjoy a 911 now while my eyes are good, hearing sharp, and reflexes quick, instead of waiting until retirement when the car I wanted now costs a billion dollars. (Inflation adjusted)
Early 996s are pretty much at that point now, which is great. The big repairs aren't super out of line relative to other German cars (unless you lose an engine, in which case,
). It's even relatively practical!
Been buying (and selling ) these cars for over 50 years, probably 30-35 total, and I can report that for $15-18k for an early 996 it is probably the best deal ever. Even with all the issues it's still the best bang for the buck. I suspect that it is due in large part to those in my generation looking more to the 356, early 911 vintage cars now that they can afford what they couldn't back then. I had no problem unloading a 993 and picking up a much newer car for 1/3 the sale price.
30-35? ****! :P
Jk, I agree with your assessment. And if you are planing on keeping it, you can do quite a bit of customization(sounds better than modding) and still have a lot of car for the money.
Said I'd have one by 28. Should have listened to myself. 48, when I paid cash. They are cheap these days. That won't last, I'm sure. Enjoying it every day.
Bought my 924 turbo when I was 19, black ice took it from me two years later. Bought a 928S at 22, sold it about 2 years later when I left the military. Had a looong drought of inferior cars and finally in a 996 at age 45. Had it for a year and don't plan to let it go.
I started the addiction when I was 25 yrs old in 1985. First Porsche was silver/black 928 - Bought it from a Vietnam Vet.
After numerous 356's, 911's I settled for 996 C4S at 57
Theres not a day that goes by that don't I regret selling my 1959 sunroof coupe
Most likely going to jump up to a 2008 C4S either this year or next year
I was about to buy a 96 4S Coupe in 2007 for $32,000. Didn't. Doh.
So, two kids later, I picked up this 99 C2 last month. Better late than never.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, I am 44 now.
I brought my first 911 (a 2.2E) at just 21, then at 22 I changed it for a yellow 3.2 Carrera. At 25 I brought a 3.0 Turbo then after a few years I left the marque and went with Jaguars and Mercs.
At 46 I brought a 996.2 3.6 Cab and my wife a 2.7 Boxster.
Now I'm 48, the Boxster has turned into a Range Rover, but the 996 remains and will do for years.
1970 2.2E poor condition with dodgy impact bumper conversion.
1984 3.2 Carrera
'03 2.7 Facelift Boxster & '02 996.2
996.2 I've spent thousands on this including an engine replacement, so I guess it a keeper.
I don't want to suggest that Hurdi is old, but...he swears that he used to work corners when Moses's run group was out. on one especially memorable afternoon, Moses raised his hands and parted the slalom cones so he could drive right down the middle. This would have been cool except that suddenly there were a bunch of Israelites and the Egyptian army all walking through the braking session and across the finish line, which screwed up timing for that entire run group.
Weird.
Purchased my 2002 996 C4 in February for my 34th birthday. Traded a 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander for it. Best decision ever! Hoping to have a second much newer p-car in the near future.
Previously had a Mercedes w201 which I gave to my brother. Then at 25 I bought my first Porsche a black 2004 C2
had to wait until I was 25 so I could actually be fully insured for a decent price.
Bought my '66 912 in 2001, just before turning 27.

Fast forward a few years, just got my 996 and in July I'll be 42. The lad in the picture admiring the 996 was born a few months after I got the 912; his older sister is hoping I'll let her drive the 996 someday.

Just turned 30 last month.... could have bought one way earlier but decided to own Modified Golf R, Audi S4's, and Jeep SRT8's first. All of which obviously had a lot more storage/room for weekend trips.
I am with Jaetee!! Had to get my 911 before turning 50!
Had my 1st Porsche at 25, I loved that 924!!
Hmm, did not loose the habit of also photographing red cars in the background I guess!!!
I was 56 when I bought my 996, now 63. I just ordered a case of 12 Napa Gold oil filters and bunch of crush washers. It's odd that you start to wonder if you'll get a chance to use them all.
Wyovino
You have plenty of time to use those crush washers! My dad, who is now 87, has only recently slowed down on his '66.
Bought mine a month before my 48th bday in January. Like others, this was a long time goal of mine. No regrets!
Bought mine when I was 50 6 years ago but bought my first Porsche the year before (a 997). For me the 997 started it all, but even with all my cars the 996 is my favorite
Lowpue, wowsa what a beauty - the paint and everything just looks brand new still. Just need a 3rd raditor and she'll look real aggressive. Speed Yellow and Guards Red are the best Porsche colors for a Aero 996 (IMO)
57yrs old and My First Porsche and I just had to make it totally different

Twenty eight years of continuous Porsche ownership of various models. This one is the best. I'd like to thank the Porsche family and the engineers for including back seats seats in (almost) all of them. That was the only way this was possible, since we hauled them young'uns around back there all the time.
Its funny you should mention the third radiator...Below is a picture of the car with it installed last year (along side one of my Italian mistresses). I am constantly playing with that 996. Also, put on a MkII bumper and had the whole car repainted last year as well. This is what it looks like now. I totally agree with you on color, btw
First Porsche was a 1986 944 Turbo bought in 1998. Loved that car. Now my car is a 2002 911 Carrera Cabrio bought in Aug 2016. Love this car as much or more. The sound of the engine is intoxicating. I am now 63 going on 25 LOL
First Porsche, an 01 986 Boxster S at 25 and drove it for two happy years around SoCal. Moved back to Milwaukee and bought the 996 six months ago at 27.
Coming up on 2 years of ownership of my 2003 C4S I purchased when I was 28. Needless to say I am 30 now... It's my daily driver and I always look forward to driving it, I love this thing
Nice one, crmcgregor!
I am 51!
Always loved the look of the 996 4S/turbo, but having small children back then, a 911 was not really an option for us.
Fast forward to 2017 and my sports car gene somehow reactivated itself again!. I needed to get back to a 911, having driven the Cayenne for 12+ years!
I started looking at 997:s but then I ran into this mint red 996 4S. Impossible to pass up! :d

I'm 53 this year the exact sort of age I used to call sad when I was a teen and looked on with great envy at older types with hot wives (partners these days) in 1980's Porsches..
Just turned 64, purchased my first Porsche in the last week of being 63.
'03 C2 manual, Basalt Black Metallic, full leather (black), 64,000kms (39,000mi) when purchased.
Also proud owner of a rust-free factory original Audi ur quattro 20V 1990, 105,000mi, a Honda Integra Type R JDM DC2 1996. A Honda Integra Type R DC2 race car with K20a transplant, a Renault Megane 265 RS 2015, and a 1999 BMW E39 M5 (for sale to make room for the 911), Amarok ute, auto AWD for tow/service race car.
11 years motorsport experience: tarmac rally - Targa NZ, circuit racing, 24 Hr Nurburgring 2010,11,13.
For me a connected driving experience is crucial - and a manual gearbox essential - all my cars ONLY came with a manual box except for the 996, but manual in that was a must-have. I value lighter weight and 2WD as these enhance the driving experience. Speed across the ground and faster track times ONLY matter in my race car - for the street the drive must be as involving as possible, and that means 2WD (or ur quattro!
)
Always wanted a 911, nearly bought one 4 years ago, but warned off the 996s, so got the M5 - fabulous touring car, but so different to the 911 driving experience.
'90 urq 20V, '03 C2 man
Bought my first Porsche (My black 86 944T) at 19, then the addiction began, resulting in more 944's, a boxster, cayenne, now the 996 purchased at 26.
It may be that most 996 owners (or 911's in general) are older due to most of the youth crowd wanting hondas and the more "ricey" type things, and don't want to bother doing research on something like a 911, as they just assume they are expensive to buy and to maintain and insure, and don't bother to look into it any further, grab an old civic and off they go with autozone "upgrades" and a penchant for seeing just how many "fogeys" they can pi$$ off at any cost.
Overall though, after taking my time and looking into things, I have a wonderful addiction (how many can say something like that) and many more years of p-cars in the future, I hope. I get attached sometimes... AND a wonderful community to be a part of, rennlist, my local p-car club, and euro shows and gatherings all over.
24 here and this is my first Porsche, 2003 996 C2 - Seal Gray/Metropol Blue interior with carbon fiber trim. 52k Miles - in beautiful condition inside and out. Looking forward to what is to come!
Bought the 996 a year and a half ago, at 68, as a retirement gift to myself. Never had a Porsche before, but my second car, at 17, was an ALFA Giulia Spyder, and the Porsche's predecessor was a BMW Z3M roadster. There were a few fun cars in between, including an XKE and a Dutton Phaeton. I feel young when I drive it, but not when I get in and out of it...
