After a failure of the Fabspeed X-pipe at the WGI Club Race (2 fractured welds, followed by terrible follow up and a 'repair' job that is unusable - that's a whole story in itself), I recently had KMC in Lawrence, MA make me a custom SS center exit exhaust using Magnaflow cans (see pix).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Finished removal of the sunroof / roof skin as part of the 2017 weight loss program for the Green Machine. Not a bodywork expert by any means but was able to remove all the inside bits (in spite of roll cage already being installed) and cut all the spot welds to pull off the old skin. Got to buy a nice angle grinder and (4) weld cutting bits (they break). Whole project was about 5 hours of labor. More pix to follow.

POST 4Original post

Pretty cool! How much weight savings with this project?

POST 5Original post

Very cool indeed, what type of metal for the roof, or are you using cf?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Some pix of the new slicktop. I had to go with a factory part, due to PCA SP996 class rules. It fits perfectly, and I'll talk with the bodyshop to see if they suggest using adhesive or welding it in place. I'll look back at my notes to see exactly how much weight came out from this part of the project.

POST 7Original post

What's the part number and price of the roof skin? I'm actually in the process of this but, I was going to have my sunroof skin welded in.

POST 8Original post

Great work. Can you take a picture of the inside of both roofs? I'm curious to see what (if any) additional structure or bracing existed in the non-sunroof one.

POST 9Original post

996 503 501 00 - 996 GT3 outer roof panel. Fully SP996 legal.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Trendy 996 - Slakker gave the correct p/n for the roof skin above. Cost was $600 delivered to my local dealership. The pic below shows some additional bracing/boxing of the sunroof opening. The slicktop is a pure skin with none of this extra metal. It would be a cool conversion on a street car if painted to match other interior painted surfaces. You can see the additional bracing around the sunroof opening here.

POST 13Original post

This is an interesting thread on weight loss, including a carbon roof install http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=106137

POST 14Original post

I can't wait to get mine removed. I took the full sunroof out. My car is a street car but, it's set up for track. I have a carbon skin but, I'm just not sure if I want to use it and just get a oem metal skin. I can get them for 450 delivered to me. That's bc I work for a high end shop.

POST 15Original post

Anyone with a street car buy the non-sunroof headliner to use inside or make a headliner from the fitment parts of the sunroof headliner?

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 13964932

There are usually a few OEM non sunroof headliners on UK eBay if you want an original one. Otherwise my car had a custom alcantara headliner that I replaced for an OEM one. The custom one didnt look like it would be difficult for an auto trimmer to make.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Scheduled to have the new roof, GT3 nose, and Getty SP996 rear wing painted in a few weeks. Turning my attention to batteries now. Anyone have a suggestion for a battery that weighs in at 10 lbs or slightly more? I use a battery disconnect so there should be no ongoing load. Looking for something that will hold up for a race weekend without needing a trickle charger or jump.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 13992945

Lithium ion battery will be the lightest you can get, some good brands out there such as Braille, AntiGravity. LOL you thought Porsche tax was bad, wait till you see the prices on these bad boy's. the one in my Harley cost me 500.00 and only weight 4 lbs. here are some example http://www.jegs.com/p/Lithium-Pros/L...70167/10002/-1

POST 20Original post

braille is just a rebranded deka (et14 i think) atv battery.

POST 21Original post

Most are using the Braille 17lb'er or the odyssey 13lb'er for SP996. I have a $200 Battery Tender Li-iron battery from amazon that weighs 3.5lbs and works awesome!

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the input. I see the Odyssey 625 weighs in at 13.2 lbs. The SP996 requirement is >10lbs. so OK there. Summit has this at $113 - relatively inexpensive way to save 29lbs, (compared to removing the sunroof anyway!) https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ody-pc625/overview/

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good progress as the LRP Club Race on April 20th looms. Went with the Odyssey battery and splurged for the Rennline aluminum box to secure it (vs. my first inclination, which involved 2x4 scraps and nylon strapping!). The fit is good and the whole setup weighs 15lbs. The original battery was 39 lbs, so a net weight savings of 24lbs. Upgraded to adjustable Tarett 'GT' sway bars. A little trouble getting the lateral stops to work on the front bar, but they seem to fit well otherwise. Getty GT3 bumper and rear deck/wing arrived yesterday. Will fit those over the weekend. Anyone figure out how to attach screens to the GT3 bumper? Looks like very fussy work. Maybe I can set the screens in an epoxy bed? Dropping the car off for paint on Wednesday...

POST 24Original post

I blew off putting the screens on and haven't had any issues. Getty rocks by the way. They are going to start getting all of my business from this point forward. I was using another company and they wouldn't split pairs so replacing my headlight cover and end plate were going to be over $400. Getty said they do it for $50. I just made the connection that you are on the SP996 email list as well. Good luck at LRP!!!!

POST 25Original post

A bed of epoxy or silicone should hold for awhile.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Roof skin, GT3 bumper and Getty tailbase with SP996 wing all back from the paint shop last week. Rivets and epoxy used to attach roof skin - looks very solid. Ended up using some epoxy to bed the screens in the tailbase (very hard to do a neat job here because of limited access). Will use epoxy and some speed nuts to attach the front screens. The fixed side windows went in with 3 screws using the existing mounting holes (with some spacers to stand off and fit into the OEM gaskets). Used the recommended Dow Corning 745 silicone to bed the 5-Star lexan rear window, and 12 small screws around the perimeter as well. I can see that it will deflect under pressure so I may fabricate some aluminum bar stock to secure it further. Pix to follow.

POST 27Original post

I haven't heard or issue while going forward but while trailering mine backwards, my rear lexan bowed in and the pressure broke the seams. I have 2 - metal straps across it (front to back) that saved it from flying off. The straps are attached using nut certz and small bolts. Can you post a picture of you quarter glass install?

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here are some pix of the new parts and the lexan installs. GT3 bumper cover from Getty SP996 tailbase and wing - also Getty lexan quarter window - installed with spacers and rubber washers using (2) bottom existing holes and drilled/tapped (1) new mounting hole for the upper screw Test fit of rear lexan window. Will send shot of final install soon. Lots o' green parts. Will probably sell the sweet ducktail that came with the car (bottom left). New Roof skin. Mostly epoxy and clamps, although I used a few rivets front and back. The epoxy is rock hard after curing for 24 hours.

POST 29Original post

PM sent about the ducktail. And great project coming together, cant wait to see it completed!

POST 30Original post

Don't suppose you happen to know the weight of the Ducktail? I'm assuming that's the Getty basic model? Trying to decide... Thanks!

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

cag4 - Not sure about the weight of the 996 ducktail (or the manufacturer). I'll put it on the scale when I get back to the shop.

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Racing season interrupted this thread for a while, but it looks like I am at 2710lbs with all the weight reduction efforts. Lexan windows, roof, new bumper and wing all working well. Recently added a gurney flap to the back of the wing, which theoretically lets me run it flatter with the same downforce. It's loud but provides a bit of backpressure and it really improves the torque below 5K RPM. The car really squirts out of the turns now - keeping up with older Cup cars that are much quicker overall. I'll post video from the crazy first few laps at Mosport so you can see how quick!

POST 33Original post

I'm way late to this thread, but for anyone else doing this, I found it fairly easy to rosette weld the new roof on. In my case I had a used roof skin that I had drilled out all of the spot welds (fun, fun, fun), but the good news was this made for great locations to rosette weld the new roof on. It is pretty easy to do with a MIG welder, not a super high skill operation like TIG welding. Nice lightweight build, and that exhaust is a work of art.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
