But, there are thousands of cases documented on car forums (Porsche and other marques) of wrecked cars with clean carfaxes.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I purchased a 996 this year. Second owner. Clean carfax clean title. ...what a joke!
The title ended up being one signed but not dated from the original purchaser... this changed hands several times without ever a change of title ownership.
I had a scratch in the rear bumper cover repaired when I bought it, then biffed it again. I spoke to the repair shop with my concerns that 3 layers of paint might be a problem and might require a new bumper cover. The shop and insurance company decided otherwise(likely because of the 2100.00 oem bumper cost).
Long story short: the repair looks beautiful. But, the shop showed me that there were actually 6 layers of re-paint.
Obviously, the previous owners were paying for damage out of pocket and the carfax failed to pick this up!
Never trust a Carfax, just use it as a general guide. Rely on the PPI and your own due diligence.
Mechanics and body shops don't have to report to Carfax. I once bought a car that had been repainted (and I knew it) but the Carfax was clean.
Yes....use a carfax (or similar) as a guide. But, there are thousands of cases documented on car forums (Porsche and other marques) of wrecked cars with clean carfaxes.
Carfax is a joke. Pure marketing forced on a demographic that doesn't know any better (not car forum guys, I mean the consumer reports crowd). I have seen several cars with major damage, fixed at a body shop and paid by insurance, not recorded at all by Carfax. I have also owned a car that had never been in an accident (for sure) and they claimed it had repairs done -- which I disputed and got removed. Their system is a good idea in principle but there is no incentive for people to report events to them, hence most of the time their reports are bogus.
Your thread title says it all, but in my opinion you are stating the obvious. Did you think a carfax magically knows a car's entire history? I have an accident, I repair it myself, end of story. How would that ever make it to a carfax?
A car can be totaled by an insurance company, resold, and not show up on the carfax. Even though it was totaled by the insurance company. State Farm just got sued for that exact practice which they repeated over 30,000 times.
If your car looks good, drives great, enjoy it!
