Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I use no other location, and I have placed 16 sensors on one engine, at one time to determine this.
Leading evidence: 'Use no other location, and i have placed 16 sensors' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Set lower than some max temp anyway' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Fans operating early is a positive and would be set lower than some max temp anyway.

My sensor plugs into a display controller that can trigger a relay at a set temp that I plan on using to trigger the radiator fans - Auber unit.

I bought a Auber display/control unit that can trigger a relay at a set temp - I am going to see if I can use this to turn on the radiator fans.

Has anyone used the free port on the left cam cover for an oil temp sender?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone used the free port on the left cam cover for an oil temp sender? The left cover is cast with a port similar to the one on the right side where the oil pressure send is threaded. Left side is blocked off with a bolt. My only concern is whether there enough room to add a temp sensor to go straight up, similar to the pressure sender.

This is a very poor location to measure oil temperature. I have seen a 30* deviation in oil temperature at this location when compared to the oil sump.
I always measure oil temperature in the sump.
If you want accurate data for oil temperature, the only place to get that is the sump. You will have to weld a bung to the sump plate to accommodate the sensor.

Maybe LN should add a threaded port in their Deep Sump kit for an oil temp sender? I know just the guy to develop that for them :-).
Pity = human nature .
So let it be (someone else's) D.I.Y. Thread to drill and tap a 2 qt.Deep Sump spacer for an oil temp sender. Then we can advise them on the best oil-resistant sealer for the threads.
there is already an oil temp sensor in the sump - the oil level sender also senses temperature. it is a propriety signal, however (obd can't get it but durametric, porsche diagnostic tools can). there is a thread here on rennlist on how to program a small arduino to convert the signal to vdo range.
I've never seen that gauge get closer than 20*F from that of a stand alone, high quality, temperature compensates stand alone gauge.
It can be as much as 47* off based on my experience. Even reading It from the CAN, I don't trust it.
I've been aware of Ahsai's thread. And I have a durametric reader. Just seeing temp doesn't really do anything except maybe give you some "Oh ****!" moments.

Jake would know about the accuracy of various oil locations. But for my purposes, accuracy isn't the priority as much as active cooling. Fans operating early is a positive and would be set lower than some max temp anyway. And I'd like to add the sump spacer so this would lower the sump even lower to the ground. And lowering ride height, etc.
And I don't have the patience for breadboards and following electrical diagrams. But maybe a temporary oil drain plug sensor simultaneously would be a good experiment to get a feel for the difference.
I have an oil pressure senor installed in that spot for a stand alone gauge and an oil temp sensor installed in the sump. A vdo sender in the left head will fit just fine, if thats the info you're looking for (just a pain to get to).
The deviation between the threaded position on the cylinder head/ cam cover from bank 1, to bank 2 is 7-12 PSI generally, with bank 2 always being lower. FYI.
really? I get the opposite. (assuming you mean bank 2 being where the oem unit is mounted). I do see a difference of exactly what you stated, call it 10psi.
The other thing you could have a good TIG guy do is just build up that wall with TIG filler and forget the part that broke off. I think it would have a fighting chance. If you put a stud in that half of the hole, you might even form threads as you go. In the spirit of this effort...
