It's used for artwork and goes on super-thin so it doesn't look painted at all.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
26 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

In May I was side-swiped on the interstate by a reckless *******, he passed me on the right, on an exit ramp and hit me getting back on the freeway.
He lied to the cop and said I changed lanes into him, it's now in arbitration, and so far, I'm out my $1000 deductible...anyway...
The impact damaged the right front wheel to the point that it had to be refurbished (stripped, filled, painted, powder-coated). I decided to pay to have the other three done as a couple had some curb rash; all four turned out great. About two weeks ago, while checking tire pressure I noticed the left front crest had fallen off the center cap. Thinking this was the result of the refurbishment, I called the body shop to see if they would cover it as warranty. The guy that handled my claim said he would check with the owner. When I didn't get a call back I drove the car to the shop. While waiting in their lobby I looked out and noticed the other front wheel was now missing its crest. The owner stepped out and said he didn't feel responsible, that it was the age of the wheel, and the others would probably fall off shortly thereafter...great. He was right, I drove the car home and sure enough, a third crest had fallen off, right rear. I then easily popped the last one off, it was clearly next.
As it turns out, you can't just buy the crest, you have to buy the center cap...they're $50+ each.
The moral of the story: If you have an older 996 with the center caps that have a glued on crest, and you disturb that cap in any way, you may want to be proactive and re-glue those crests; the factory glue has a life expectancy that you're about to hit.
For the TL/DR crowd, read the last paragraph. Also, buy a dash-cam.
Exactly why I have a dash-cam in my car. Best $60 I ever spent. Everyday is seems like a near miss by some impatient joker distracted on his cell phone or not paying attention to other drivers. And the fact that we live in a "It's not my fault" society, I'll have these cameras in every car.
I see you're in GA. I'm in Atlanta, work in Buckhead; I've been hit four times in three years, two hits from behind (sitting still), one red light runner (totaled my G35), and now this. I expect a cell phone was involved in each case.
Awesome! I used to live in Dekalb Co and then we moved up to Banks Co. Currently, I'm closer to the Athens GA area. Traffic not as bad, but since it's a college town, lots of youngens on the cell phones texting instead of driving. Yikes!
It's a growing problem and it's unfortunate that I have to put a camera in my car, but this generation is notorious for not taking blame in an accident. People have hit my car so many times it's crazy. Guess that explains why we're so **** about our Porsches.
It a Cobra CDR-855BT.

Hard wired into the switched 12V of my car. On the Porsche 996, you can use the phone power which located behind the "batt trim" below the radio. That will give you the switched 12V so that the camera turns off with the car and doesn't risk draining your battery.
I lost one crest and thought some kid might have taken it for a souvenir. Then I lost another one and realized that it was the glue that had gone brittle. I didn't want to spend $200+ on replacements so I found some cheap knock-offs on eBay for about $10. They're not great close up but from a foot or two away you really can't tell the difference. If you want a concours look you'll have to shell out the bucks.
Oh that would be too easy, but the problem is that passengers would be subject to the same rules as the driver. That is, the phones would turn off and make them actually have to carry on a real conversation. This would lead to those ol' car games like 99 bottles of beer on the wall, I spy, and grandpa reading all the road signs out loud.
Sorry to hear about that, at least you were able to get the insurance to cover some of the damage. We have a friend that just totaled his 458 at VIR last month and the car burned to the ground (he's lucky to be alive). His insurance is not covering the car
And to top it off he has to pay VIR a big fee for fire and rescue!

Yep, almost exact same experience as OP, but I didn't get hit to have it happen. My son took pity and surprised me with a full set for Father's Day about 3 years ago. Although the crests were a bit bigger, the quality was pretty good. Told me he spent $25 on eBay. After 3 years the gold has faded on a couple to silver, but they don't look bad.
Good to know, although I'm hoping to not have to buy any for a while. I paid $230 for a full set on ebay, they are OE. I've already received them and naturally, there's now a set on ebay for $190...
A long, long time ago, I posted a solution for CFOS (crest falling off syndrome) -- difficult to find because it was 12 years ago, but the thread is still there (solution starts on post #30) ->

What is a good glue...or epoxy to use for this repair? I have issues on my car as well...lost the first one...just fell off while car was in storage over last winter!
Chris
I've used that 3M Emblem and Trim glue a lot and it's great stuff.
Another good trick with the crests to prevent them from fading or chipping is to spray them with Krylon Crystal Clear (

) acrylic. It's used for artwork and goes on super-thin so it doesn't look painted at all. You can't really tell that it's been coated. I did it for only the crests, not the silver surround -- so they can be coated when the crest is off (if you are gluing them on) or you can tape off the silver part. A few days after it dries, I put 303 over the crest to help block UV.
