If it's oil only, you can use brake cleaner with a brass brush followed by citrus cleaner like Simple Green for aircraft precision cleaner (not regular simple green).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi any advice on how to degrease and clean the underside of the car (996 TT). I was going to use a degreasing air tool (compressor) with a degrease fluid. Anything I should look out for, assume this would be ok so long as I don't dwell on area and sweep the entire underside? Many thanks Matt

POST 2Original post

Without seeing what you're looking to clean, it's difficult to judge. Did you have and large oil leak or maybe blow a hydraulic line to your steering rack? It should be fine, just note that much of that "brownish" looking stuff (waxoil) was applied by Porsche as a protectant for many of the metal parts.

POST 3Original post

Dry ice blasting would be the way to go. http://wickensdryiceblasting.com/

POST 4Original post

+1 on the dry ice blasting if you can find someone in your area that can do it. Otherwise a lift with some soap and water (or pressure washer if you don't go too crazy) might be the way to go. ..Then find out where the oil is coming from!

POST 5Original post

If it's oil only, you can use brake cleaner with a brass brush followed by citrus cleaner like Simple Green for aircraft precision cleaner (not regular simple green). If it's cosmoline, it's a lot harder. You can use goo gone and xinit and lots of elbow grease. Of course dry ice blasting will be the best.

POST 6Original post

damn near every vehicle ive ever had to spend much time underneath working on, has been placed up on blocks out in the driveway. then have a go at the underside with a few cans of degreaser. spray it, let it sit for awhile, then spray it with some more degreaser. Then a good pair of safety glasses or face shield, and some clothes you don't care about... Then i get to work with the power washer. Spend a bunch of time getting in the nooks and crannies. If you want to track down an oil leak, first you have to get ride of the oil thats all over, so you can hopefully figure out its starting point.

POST 7Original post

The best degreaser I have EVER tried is P21S! It is expensive so what I do is I first use a cheaper product called Oil Eater to get the bulk of the grease/grim off. Then I finish it off with P21S. Spray it on the affected area, let sit for about 10 minutes. Neat thing is you really don't even need to scrub the dirt. Just blast it off with water. I still try to brush the grime off. Amazing stuff! Been using it for almost 10 years now.

POST 8Original post

I used this stuff on my two Audi's recently, don't have any before pictures....but WOW, so easy to use, spray on, rinse off. Highly recommended.
