Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

"This is why ore- filling an oil filter on a freshly built, never fired engine is a bad idea, as you have an air filled system between the pump and the filter, and in the case of the M96, this is a long, complex pathway to have filled with air.

"People try to outsmart the scenario by filling the filter with oil, they don't know what they don't know, and that increases the priming time of the entire oil system by at least 2-3 X more than if the filter was installed dry.
Leading evidence: 'Fill with air' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill filter' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

preoil the engine, then remove and fill the rest of the oil to the full mark.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

You can go the extra mile and do something that is good due diligence in other engines (like replace piston rings for example) that turns out to be the worst thing for the M96 !

all my overhaul prestart are done with preoiling the engine using a stainless bug sprayer with a fitting to fit a oil gallery on the block, usually the oil press.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all.
Quick question...what's the easiest way to disable the ignition and fuel pump?
My engine goes back in this weekend after replacing a cracked 1-3 cylinder head and A LOT of cleanup. I'd like to circulate oil through the system and bring it up to pressure before letting it fire.
Can't wait to drive it for the first time!
pull the fuel pump re-lay.OR. a popular way to get early oil pressure is to start the car for 2 or so seconds then shut off repeat this a few or more times seems to do the trick.
From Raby:
"This is why ore- filling an oil filter on a freshly built, never fired engine is a bad idea, as you have an air filled system between the pump and the filter, and in the case of the M96, this is a long, complex pathway to have filled with air. Doing this will dramatically increase the time it takes for the engine to achieve oil pressure, as the system can bleed the air quickly, and fill the filter quickly if the bleeding of the system occurs progressively. I do the same thing with aircooled engines that have large external oil systems, with coolers, and larger filters employed.
"People try to outsmart the scenario by filling the filter with oil, they don't know what they don't know, and that increases the priming time of the entire oil system by at least 2-3 X more than if the filter was installed dry. Been there, done that, and compared it before."

all my overhaul prestart are done with preoiling the engine using a stainless bug sprayer with a fitting to fit a oil gallery on the block, usually the oil press. sensor gallery. the bug sprayer is capable of giving you 60 psi. preoil the engine, then remove and fill the rest of the oil to the full mark. works great.
Been using this method for 35 years on engine from 2 liters gas to 50 liters diesel and aircraft engine.
You won't gain pressure like this with an M96... I've tried it dozens of times.
Instead, start the car and as soon as it fires, shut it down instantly. Do this 4-5 times, and the oil light will go out... Then start it normally.
I have an idea. Why don't we collect all Jake's quotes in a single google doc and make it a sticky thread (like the FAQ). Exactly the format like you listed here. Quote plus the reference. I bet you we'll collect many "silver bullets" like that. It should be quite useful to the community.
Brilliant suggestion ! And it would save some of us some significant embarrassment :-).
Wasn't Jake proposing to do this in a book ? The M96 Definitive Guide ? That is another story.
It is an interesting example of the gotcha quirks of the M96.
