I have a Knowledge Group class next weekend and Her and my son are already planning on running the Cherahola Skyway with the Porsche club.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

We picked up Christy's Flat 6 Innovations R36 engined 996 C4 on Saturday. She put 220 miles on it on the way home. Hit the C&C in Knoxville with it on Sunday........Then cruised all afternoon....I think she would have slept in it. It is an EXCELLENT addition to the C4 platform. It made 290 at the wheels. Smooth and effortless. She had a 2.7 986 tip before this. Now I can't completely run away from her in my R51 engined Cayman. LOL!!! This makes two R series Raby engines in the family. My son has a 986s project car.....R series???? Jake is right.......it's an addiction.....or is it affliction?

Leaving C&C yesterday.
Which Porsche Club are they going on the Cherohola Skyway with? Our Porsche Club (PCA Alabama Region) will be on the Cherohola Skyway Friday on our way to "Tail of the Dragon". Then Saturday a trip on Moonshiner 28 and other Smokey Mountain roads. I'd like to see the 996, I have 2 1999 996 , 1 coupe, 1 cab.
The Smoky Mountain Region. We are the local club. I'll be heading back from the class in the Cayman. I might be able to find them somewhere along the way. LOL.
Is it cheaper to rebuild a 'healthy' M96 vs. waiting for compromise? I'm not 100% clear on which parts are replaced in the quest to eliminate or mitigate failure modes.
Absolutely... Elective builds are thousands of dollars cheaper.
At the present we aren't even accepting failed engines for our reconstruction program. The amount of elective work we are seeing is keeping us as busy as I want to be with around a 11-12 month completion time.
Failed engines have variables on cost that we can't factor in up front, and they are a pain in the *** to deal with. Once it fails, the entire game changes.
INRANGE has supplied me with two broken engines. The Cayman lost a rod bearing on the track (Caymanitis) and the 996 had a crankshaft thrust shim failure.
Thanks Jake. One of these day's I'm gonna get organizized and give you a call. If one summer and 7,500 miles is any indication, this is going to be a long road.
What is the "general" turnaround time for an elective build? I understand the general backlog but if a build is elective, could it be scheduled for whatever time in the future, then the car is dropped off a couple of days prior to the "the scheduled build slot" and then how much time passes in general before it's ready to go?
The entire process still takes a year,
BUT we do not need the car that long!
With an elective build a completion date can be selected as "first available" and the completion time is around a year, or we can specify a date further than a year out, if someone wants to be without the car for a defined time. Lots of our Canadian customers do this, as they let us collect the car just before it would go into storage, then by spring they have the car ready to deliver home. Extra storage time is cheap here, and I just finished a new storage building for this purpose.
With an elective build, from the time the car is dropped at Flat 6, till the time we have it ready to ship home, is around 3 months.
So, let's say someone wanted to get on my list today, and signed their proposal. We'd specify an end of October 2017 completion date, and we'd collect the car to begin the processes around the middle of June 2017. The car would have the engine extracted immediately, photo documented while it is disassembled, and the car would be stored indoors the entire time. Our work to machine the block, prep heads, and etc would begin immediately upon disassembly, BUT all the new parts for the engine will already be on hand. We start making/ manufacturing/ ordering the new parts as soon as a project begins. Our small batches of parts mean long lead times, so we have to get those things underway ASAP.
So, with the end of October completion time, an engine with all machine work completed would meet with all it's new parts on the workbench around the 3rd week of September. Those parts would be dynamically balanced, and prepared, through mock up assembly, and work would commence to assemble the components around the end of September 2017. Assembly would take 2 weeks, and fitment of the engine back to the car would take 2-3 days. The remaining couple of weeks would be time for ny break- in service where I log 200 miles or so on the car, and 2-3 dyno sessions occur.
Thats the long and short of it all. I have a 15 page story written by one of my purchasers a few years ago that goes over everything he experienced before, during, and after the processes. Its a required read for anyone coming this way.
