I think the 997 sprockets have a set screw.

Maybe that happened with the one(??) set screw on the 997 IMS ?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A friend with a 997 recently had a catastrophic engine failure. The cuse was determined as the gear on the intermediate shaft slipped causing the cams to have a large deviation and then failure. What could have caused the gear to slip? TIA

POST 2Original post

Any force fed oil pressure to the IMS for the IMSB? Those sprockets are just press/interference fit (not welded not pinned) and can slip naturally, as Jake has explained many times before.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Completely stock motor no force fed oil pressure. I think the 997 sprockets have a set screw. I don't know if the set screw broke, backed out or what. Is there enough force to break a set screw? The car has approximately 10,000 track miles. There was not a missed shift or over rev. Thanks

POST 5Original post

I had my M96 IMS gears 'professionally' pinned. They used 3 set screws - not one. But they forgot the threadlocker ! Maybe that happened with the one(??) set screw on the 997 IMS ? Unlikely but maybe Porsche forgot the red threadlocker when the engine was originally assembled? I just cleaned mine and added the correct spec Loctite.

Nothing new.. Mode of failure #24, I documented this one many moons ago. See this video: You Tube That said, we weld and pin the 4 sections of the IMS assembly together. From the factory they have a light press fit, which sucks. The rear sprocket of the IMS has only 3/8" of engagement onto the IMS tube, which is idiotic. This is a pretty decent failure to have, I can repair that one without breaking a sweat...
