Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I checked my battery compartment was dry by that time.
Leading evidence: 'Check battery compartment was dry by' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'soaked coil' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check battery compartment was dry by' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Might eventually check your coils and see if there are any cracks.

Yep, check cylinder 1 coil, while you are there check the rest of them.

The coils all appeared in good condition when I pulled them off to get the spark plugs- the only thing i saw was the central small rubber seal in the very center had cracked on a few- my mechanic said not worth replacing but I guess maybe that was enough.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A few hours later everything dried up and no more issues.
SO- my 1999 911 cabriolet does not like the rain.
I live in southern California and it rained significantly 2 nights ago (the first real rain in months). I had the car parked outside and found I had idiotically left the window down on the passenger's side overnight. The windows are slightly tinted and parallel parking at night is hard to do with them up- I forgot to put them up after parking. So I cleaned that up...
then the bad thing happened... I started the car and it didnt turn over as strong as it normally does. A few seconds later, a blinking check engine light comes on and the car is hesitant. I drive the car into the garage and turn it off- a strong sulfur smell comes in. I open the hood and the smell is not from the engine.
I have a bosch bluetooth code reader and it gave me a P0301 cylinder 1 misfire.
At that point, I had to leave because that morning I was taking a board examination!!!
About 8 hours later I got back and pulled up old posts on renntech and rennlist and saw a few similar stories, perhaps water in the battery compartment (which would explain the cold turnover). I checked my battery compartment was dry by that time. I removed some debris around the drainage hole. fired it back up, cleared the codes, and watched it for a while. It seems to be running fine. The bosch tool has some on-board real-time monitors and they all seemed fine. The sulfur smell was gone. The battery looks OK.
I pushed things a bit and drove the 5 miles it takes me to get to work this AM. I felt no issues, although I didn't push it and kept it in tiptronic mode the entire time.
What am I missing??
My Car: DD, 99 911 cab, tiptronic, 211K (engine rebuild at 180). Fresh alternator and oil, fresh spark plugs
You have a cracked coil pack that is misfiring due to the rain; it stank because you were dumping unburned fuel into a cold catalytic converter. Running it dried out the coil pack; it will probably be fine until you get it thoroughly wet again.
Check under the passenger seat for water...make sure the carpet is dry. Rain water dripped through the spoiler and soaked #1 coil. When you started the car it misfired on #1 and so you smelled un-burned fuel. A few hours later everything dried up and no more issues. Might eventually check your coils and see if there are any cracks. Depending on mileage, it would be a good idea to change all of them instead of just one if it is cracked.
Thanks for all the advice. The coils all appeared in good condition when I pulled them off to get the spark plugs- the only thing i saw was the central small rubber seal in the very center had cracked on a few- my mechanic said not worth replacing but I guess maybe that was enough.
Is #1 the pain in the *** to get to- the most posterior one on the driver's side?
"I had the car parked outside and found I had idiotically left the window down on the passenger's side overnight." = control units, DME, security module reside on the floors underneath the seats...just a quick note to make sure the carpet is not wet underneath the passenger seat. Many strange issues result from "water on the floorboards" no matter how it gets there.
yeah that was idiotic. how many drains do I need to find? It does concern me that enough rain got into the engine compartment to make my car misfire.
What do people do at the car wash? I generally take mine to a DIY wash with a spray gun. I havent had an issue, but was actually more concerned with the water that I saw at the front of the car by the battery when I was washing- I keep my "absorber" towel in the frunk so it was always obvious how much water was working its way into the plastic barrier over the battery.
Im from Louisiana- I cant imagine what would happen to my car in a real rain
I've read that aftermarket intakes have had occasional issues with rain too. If you have one, do a search. If I remember correctly, there can be issues with drainage and the sensitive MAF.
