Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Overall after about a 25 min test drive, I'd say I enjoy driving the 996 more.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Some thoughts on the 1st aircooled 911 I've ever driven.
1st some background on my 996, so you'll see where my perspective is coming from. I have a 996.2 C4 cab with Fister exhaust, GT3 shift linkage, and the yellow transmission mount insert. I've tweaked the clutch helper spring for better feel. Other than that, it's pretty much stock.
Brakes - Perform well, very very stiff pedal, felt like it had very little travel.
Clutch - Felt weird being floor mounted, also very stiff. Felt non-linear. It was difficult to get used to starting in 1st. After that, I didn't notice it as much
Gas - Power delivery felt very linear and smooth, not as fast as the 996, but entertaining.
Ride - Good, felt comparable the the 996
Handling - Not enough information to judge. The roads were pretty straight.
Steering - Light on center, then heavy the more it was turned.
Trans - About what I expected for a 1984 vehicle with 80,000 miles.
Sound - Good, but not Wow! Sounded better at idle than the 996.
Other - Definitely a well built car, no noticeable squeaks or rattles. Ergonomics / switch placement is quite strange. I think eventually I'd get used to it.
This probably echos what other have said, but figured I'd share. Overall after about a 25 min test drive, I'd say I enjoy driving the 996 more. I'll have to drive a more modern 993 at some point to compare.
You forgot to add smell
That's one thing the air-cooled have that the 996 cannot match. The smell of old German vinyl mixed with burning oil. Smells awesome!
Agree with alot you have said. I own a 85 911 targa, and a 996 c4 cab. Both are extremely fun. the key differences for me.
the 996 is much faster, but feels more controlled
the 911 I find is more fun, but after 2 hrs or more, i am found wanting the 996 and power steering, air con etc.
996 is much more forgiving, the 911 if you have the wrong entry, or braking point it will punish you. Yes this is exciting, but my point is to drive it fast, you need alot more skill than a 996.
The clutch on the 911 in traffic is a good gym work out.
it really is a nice problem to have, which one to use, i find i use the 996 more often. i haven't driven a 991 targa, but i am quite keen to maybe add this to the fleet if it is a mix of the 911 targa and the 996.
