I recently replaced the Bosch H8 standard battery after 99 months (no complaints) with a new Bosch H8 AGM battery, and the whine is gone!

About 7 years ago I replaced the OEM Becker CDR220 (with tape deck) with a Becker CDR210 (AM/FM/single slot CD) head unit obtained from a rennlister.

The speakers are extremely easy to replace, all mine were replaced with Infinity 4x6 plate speakers, and the subs with the Tang Band replacement.

I have embraced technology and the digital music mediums, but somewhere along the line I just never had the heart to give up on recording to tape because I've always had excellent decks, maintained in good spec, and used good tapes with stellar results.

Suggestion
The CDR210 was compatible with the original 6 CD (CDC-3) unit in the frunk, but I think the installer had to run an extra wire led from the CDC-3 to the CDR210 mounting plate.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

FWIW there is probably a way to disable the demo mode on that Sony deck - Google the model number and "demo mode" and you will likely find instructions.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm a bit of a tapehead and one of my hobbies is to record high-quality mix tapes on my small collection of Nakamichi tape decks. The 996 I just bought came with an aftermarket Sony machine that does a lot (CD, XM, USB, bluetooth, aux-in) but it also has an annoying demo mode that flashes lights to draw attention to itself when powered off. I'm thinking of putting in a CR220 or other OEM tape deck receiver, assuming I can find one that still works properly, or if I can find a good example to send off for a refurbish.
Curious to hear thoughts and opinions from any of you guys on:
- How many of you with tape deck radios still installed actually use them?
- Are the OEM Becker cassette players finicky, hold up pretty good, and sound good when in spec?
- Does OEM stereo make a difference at resale?
- If you got rid of your cassette deck, did you put in aftermarket or an OEM CD?
-- And did you get rid of your deck because you gave up on/never had tapes, or because the deck broke? How long did your deck work before it failed?
* still have the cassette player in mine and have not used it...YET.
* so no idea about the quality of the sound.
* some owners prefer to keep their cars as close to original/OEM as possible. having factory audio hoping that it will command a premium when time to resell? up to the buyer (cassettes are VERY OLD to put it mildly)
* my car came with an aftermarket/upgraded audio system (but the factory unit was kept unmolested)
FWIW there is probably a way to disable the demo mode on that Sony deck - Google the model number and "demo mode" and you will likely find instructions. Will make the situation more tolerable while you figure out your tape deck situation.
I have a 2000 C2 cab with the CR23 with the premium sound package (pre Bose). I buy tapes from the thrift store and play them in the car. My Johnny Cash sounds pretty good. I think better than most of the reviews have given it credit, but nothing to write home about. Never had it jam or eat a tape.
The bad thing is it is very sensitive to incoming voltage. I would up putting a resistor (actually using a diode) in line to keep the radio from cutting out.
Cool that you go digging for tapes at the thrifts... Prerecorded tapes are so hit and miss, but many from the mid to late 80's and into the 90's could sound pretty good, especially the ones recorded with Dolby HX Pro.
Thanks for the hint about voltage sensitivity. Will keep that in mind if/when the time comes. I remember having that issue with a Blaupunkt radio in a VW and BMW I owned back in the day...
The Sony OM was in the pouch with the Porsche papers... Will dig that out and disable night club mode. Thanks

The CDR210 works very well and provides lots of choices for listening to CDs, etc. Plus it looks "factory".

I still have the OEM tape deck. I use a tape-to-headphone_jack converter sometimes to listen to podcasts off of my phone, so the deck still works. The sound quality is crap, but that is likely due to the converter, not the deck. I also use the radio and CD player. The reception on the radio isn't very good.
I prefer the OEM look, but I think it is highly dependent on buyer preference. Many don't care or prefer aftermarket.
The LCD on my head unit failed, but I replaced it with the LCD from another unit I acquired from a friend. Check the LCD if you buy a used one.
I actually still use the tape deck on occasion. I even have the tape holders "loaded"...
It sounds fine, and has all the usual noise reduction schemes that I used to use when recording cassettes (dolby B, C and I think PRO...) - Though I prefer noise to dolby B, C and PRO aren't too bad - at the ambient noise levels in the cockpit, there isn't a whole lot of nuance or dynamic range
I'd love to hear more on this. I have noticed my radio cuts out for a split second from time to time when I am starting from a stop and I don't give it quite enough gas as I let out the clutch.
I'm not sure about that one. My Boxster and my C2 both will loose the radio if I almost stall the motor. I just assumed the alternator lost power for a moment.
When I first got my C2 the radio would die as soon as I started the engine. It would start up again as soon as I shut the motor off. I never had this with my Boxster. Sometimes if I turned on my lights and fan the radio would come back on for a brief moment.
I connected a multimeter to my radio fuse and monitored the voltage. When I went over a certain voltage was when the radio died.
The C2 had an aftermarket alternator (voltage regulator actually) and that's what I blame it on, even though I have heard of this problem with many of the cars and I assume they all can't have aftermarket alternators.
<--- audio engineer, analog guy, and vintage hifi weirdo.
I find the factory tape deck good enough, considering the environment. A decent cassette made on a properly biased machine actually sounds surprisingly good with the car off. The thinner windows, less insulation, and glorious engine sounds in our cars have preempted my desire to rip it all out and put something "real" in there. Mine has the factory hifi, but it's almost always switched off.
Perfect. I get the picture. Thanks.
I will keep the modern Sony unit in there for the time being, and probably start hunting down a clean, working deck to install. I think the car came with "premium CD sound" but it doesn't say Bose on anything.
Hey, jaetee..yes, its me, the same perryinva. The cassette head unit itself is pretty dang good..better than any easy to find aftermarket cassette out there, except a Nakamichi unit...which besides being expensive and finicky, would require some custom wiring to make it work right. I use mine all the time (no surprise there). The better Nak ones are just heads, so a nice aftermarket amp and interface to the speaker connections is required. The real weak link are the speakers (of course) and the fake HK amp/crossover unit. The speakers are extremely easy to replace, all mine were replaced with Infinity 4x6 plate speakers, and the subs with the Tang Band replacement. I prefer the OE look (again, no surprise) and plan to replace the amp/crossover when I have the time. Welcome to the fold here.

And another useful thread for installing aftermarket.

Also, on a minor aside, I have the OEM CD changer, and always had a little alternator whine when playing CDs. I recently replaced the Bosch H8 standard battery after 99 months (no complaints) with a new Bosch H8 AGM battery, and the whine is gone! Car starts with the touch of the key instantly. what a difference. I guess I just never noticed the battery weakening with time. I record audio mix CDs from tape (there's a switch) on my Pioneer PDR-99 so I have that as a backup. My other cars have much better modern head units for all the bells and whistles, so I don't feel the need to really replace the HU with a modern one. They just don't look right to me. I also have an AUX in mod, if I want to use an ipod.
scrap that archaic tape deck and record your music to lossless compression files (like .flac) and play them off your phone or some other player. You will be much happier, plus many of the songs you want to listen to are likely all ready recorded and all you have to do is download them.
OMG this. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and couldn't wait to ditch the cassette as a music medium. I wouldn't even worry about lossless. You won't notice the difference in a 911 (or just about any other car).
Awesome! Thanks for the great info and ideas. Glad to hear Becker lives up to the reputation. Down the road, i will more than likely go for an OE tape HU and 6-disc changer with the aux-in mod.
The car is in the shop getting IMSB update, RMS, plugs, coils and brakes done. When I get the car back from my mechanic, my immediate next project will be to put in working rear window regulators. Once I am back to driving the car I will shut off the Sony's demo mode and give it a fair chance to grow on me...
... I have almost 3TB of digital music files. I completely get where you're coming from. Gonna give the Sony a fair shot, and will probably like it. Especially the bluetooth link to phone. This will give me a very long time to think about the whole OEM vs. aftermarket vibe in the car.
My tapes sound damn good. If you could hear one on my system at homie, I'm pretty sure you'd understand why I'm bothering to ask these questions.
Dude...Im a musician and avid audiophile with tube amps, records and such. I can assure you FLAC files out shine the best tapes on the planet for music reproduction after the mastering has been completed. To each their own though.
Right on.
back at you.
Too bad my 10" Sony reel to reel won't fit in the car....
Joking aside... I get it. I have been DJ'ing with turntables dating back to the late 80'. I still have around 4k records and a pair of 1200's set up at home, but nowadays when I play out I tend to use a DJ controller to avoid schlepping vinyl and give greater access to material. I have embraced technology and the digital music mediums, but somewhere along the line I just never had the heart to give up on recording to tape because I've always had excellent decks, maintained in good spec, and used good tapes with stellar results. I have tapes here from 1985 that still sound fantastic. And at some level I think it's nice to hold something tangible in your hands, rather than have music broken down to ones and zeros on a disk. I've lost more hard drives over the years than tapes to failure. I'm a big fan of data back-up.
Anyway, maybe I should have phrased my comment along the lines of "if you heard some of my tapes played on the Dragon, and saw how many mixtapes I own, you would understand where I'm coming from...." And when I say mixtapes, I don't just mean compilations of readily downloadable songs, I have tons of non-stop DJ mixes recorded on tape. One of a kind recordings that don't exist in the digital realm, and I don't want to have transcribe tapes just to be able to hear them in the car.
And I also get that in a car like the 911, the motor and driving experience are the real main attraction anyway... Once driving the car regularly, I may not use the radio much at all and this could all turn into a moot point. Remains to be seen.
But, for my specific case, a tape deck with line-in modification would allow me to play tapes, aux-in my portable MD player (cuz I also have tons of mini-disk recordings I made in clubs), and play MP3s/wave/flac/whatever from my android or iPhone. Going that route would give "ME" the best of both worlds and restore the interior of the car back to a proper stock look. That's a win-win in my book.
I'm not trying to convert anyone to become a tapehead, or convince anyone that tapes are the be-all, end-all best thing since sliced bread. It's not my style, and I know that's not the case. It is archaic, but that doesn't mean it's bad, either. The true purpose of this thread was to get feedback on how good of a tape deck the Becker units can be. And from the sounds of some of the responses here, they are worthy tape decks.
So, if anyone out there has a decent deck they pulled from their 996, feel free to hit me up via PM. I may be a buyer.
Nope, no, not even true.
FLAC files, no matter how convenient and transparent they are, do not/cannot reproduce all of the bandwidth and signals present in analog audio, as they are merely a SAMPLE of the original recorded content.
If you are using FLAC files for (more recent) music that was originally recorded digitally, they're fine for that. However, music originally recorded to tape, mastered to analog tapes or vinyl, contain subtleties- harmonics, sub harmonics, etc. not possible to be captured digitally (even at the highest sampling rates) because it is still just a "sample" of the original content.
I understand the convenience of digital music. I understand the inherent extremely low noise floor of digital recording. I understand the bandwidth capabilities of digital recording that is not available in the analog realm. But to say that any digital version of music that was originally recorded to tape is better in any sonic way is scientifically and audibly wrong. My .02 as a professional audio engineer. You can thank me later.
Okay... I got all the electrical oddities sorted in my car. Everything traced back to the immobilizer, which apparently had gotten wet at some point in it's past. Roughly 1/3 of the circuit board inside was corroded.
Prior to figuring this out, the radio was not turning off after pulling the keys, the passenger door was not lockable, the central locking system was completely inoperable, the clamshell for the top would not work and the interior lights would stay on 100% of the time (unless I left key in the ignition).
Until I found the corrosion in the immobilizer box, I was afraid someone nerfed the install of the aftermarket radio and was considering swapping back to stock.
Now that the car is doing things the way it should, I spent the time to figure out how to turn off the Sony demo rainbow light mode and lock the stereo to amber lights. It looks good and performs fine. I am not going to change that back to stock. I will likely end up pairing my cell phone and maybe even getting a Sirius XM module to use in the car as well....
I find myself turning off the music quite often anyway. If I want symphonic sound, I drive my Acura RL instead.
Only because you asked: I had completely forgotten that I have a cassette player. The only time I used it was to eject Helen Reddy.
I ditched the stock 6 disc in the frunk for a real amp, replacement speakers and Solisto for digital inputs. Can't say I miss the inconveniences of cassettes, like rewinding, melting, flipping sides and extra tape hell.
My head unit is the stock CDR-220. I like how it looks and won't change it. It works fine.
In the 40 years of using cassettes and many of those years spent in hot climates I can honestly say I've never seen a melted tape. I've seen vinyl records warp when left in the car on a sunny day, or even when left indoors in direct sunlight... but never a tape. Then again, I never used junk tapes, either. Melting tapes = non issue IMHO.
"I had completely forgotten that I have a cassette player. The only time I used it was to eject Helen Reddy."
The fact that you admit to having a Helen Reddy tape anywhere near your car (no less in the player) is utterly mind boggling to me...IMO there is just no place in a 996/911 HR music...
I interpreted those comments to mean the PO had left that tape in the car and the only time the tape deck was ever used was to get rid of that tape...
Could be wrong, but I'm going to give ditto the benefit of the doubt on that one.
Helen Reddy tape deserves to be melted, on purpose.
