Reported cause
I had the same thing happen to me last year and it was the brake switch.
Leading evidence: 'brake switch' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'brake switch' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean mass air flow sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Removed and cleaned MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner from Autozone and let it dry thoroughly.

Then went about replacing the brake-light switch and that sorted the problem.

Upon installing the switch, you need to pull out the plunger and push down the pedal, install the switch, and let the retracting pedal set the plunger at the correct depth.

Your brake light switch can be defective with the brake lights operating ,its the other part of the switch that can cause both ABS/PSM lights to come on.Also even if you use a porsche part it can still be defective.I had it happen to my car .I bought a durametric test cable that let me monitor the brake switch and it showed the new switch was defective.Got i replaced and worked fine afterwards ,verified with durametric .
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Did the brake light switch swap and that didn't solve it (the original one was good) so now I'm out an extra brake light switch.
Just got failure lights for both PSM and ABS at the same time. Any ideas what causes this and is it OK to drive in the meantime?
Driven it 3 times now and lights have not come back on.
Been a couple weeks now and both lights come on every time shortly after start up.
Could be something as simple as a bad wheel sensor. Of course it could be more.
Hard to tell just based on the warning light. As far as driving it are you sure all 4 brakes are functioning?
What was the car doing ? I've had that happen with out of spec sizing and wear on rear tires when under hard aggressive cornering and braking. A restart reset everything.
Had this as well, albeit after driving through some deep snow. Restart cleared it so it could have been something caught up in a wheel sensor. Driving without just means no ABS and PSM, which shouldnt be an issue in the dry if your aware of it
I had the same thing happen about 5 times. Ended up being the MAFS. I know it sounds nuts but clean it. If it comes back change it. It seemed to happen only when I was giving fuel. Like backing up and when I accelerated from a light. When I would restart the car it went away and would stay away for days. I took it to Mtech in New rochelle NY, it's a bit far from you in albany. He ordered a new MAFS and its been two months with out the ABS/PSM lights coming on. Hope it helps.

Mine was a battery being discharged and the car being driven infrequently. Threw a trickle charger on it overnight and all has been well.
Did the brake light switch swap and that didn't solve it (the original one was good) so now I'm out an extra brake light switch. If you're interested, it's yours. All I ask is for you to cover shipping (around $8/$10 or so.)
Had the same thing last year. It was a sensor in ABS System. Porsche wouldn't sell sensor separately $2K for new unit but discover a BMW 535 had identical ABS unit. BMW sold the sensor separately it was a little over $150.00 plus installation. Problem solved!
Scan the system with Durametric or alike and go from there. If no codes, just keep driving until it happens again then scan it again. Could be just a fluke.
Just had the same thing happen after a DE event in Midwest, brake lights failed also, lights were on all the time after heavier braking. Bad brake switch - cost about 200.00 with labor, easy!
Unplugged my MAF to remove filter housing. Started and drove the car out of the garage and both the ABS and PSM lights came on. Reattached the MAF, cleared the codes, and all is well. Anytime I start the car with the MAF unhooked it always throws the same two codes.
Just curious if anyone saw if one of the fixes (brake switch vs. MAF) occurred more in colder weather? I'm thinking it would be the MAF since I think that it would logically be more likely affected by temperature.
Reason I ask:
Spring time
(I live in NY) - start car up - PSM/ABS lights go on, most of the time. Drive a bit, start again - no lights, same results as other RL's.
Summer
- never saw it.
Fall (right now)
- start car up - PSM/ABS lights go on, almost all the time. Goes off after restarting a minute or two later. I'm also driving it several times a week, not letting it sit for 4-6 days.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Eric
Mine was the brake switch. It would happen when I applied the brakes, maybe that's a way to differentiate the cause? My extended warranty paid for replacement. (Mine is a 997 though).
Mine was intermittent initially. I also had a few brake-light bulbs out(High level). Fixed those with no improvement. Then went about replacing the brake-light switch and that sorted the problem. Took the switch apart and found some contacts that were worn through. So I would initially get brake-lights and when I pushed the pedal further I would lose them.
Perhaps this has been mentioned previously:
The issue can be either the brake switch failure or adjustment of the brake switch. Upon installing the switch, you need to pull out the plunger and push down the pedal, install the switch, and let the retracting pedal set the plunger at the correct depth. My adjustment recently went out of whack when my big foot bumped something, and my cruise control went out, PSM and ABS lights came on, and no brake lights.
I recall there is even a warning in the shop manual about a maximum number of times the switch can be removed/installed before it should be changed, as this alignment and adjustment can be compromised.
The switch is cheap, should be considered a routine maintenance item, since it is a critical component in several systems. Just my $0.02 opinion. :-)
Darrell,
Thanks for the info. I was just curious if anyone experienced the MAF, brake switch failure, or adjustment of the switch more in cold weather.
If it can't be equated to temperature, I'll probably start with the switch.
Thanks!
Curveball, mine before I was on a custom tune, would go off when I ran to car to redline. Is this common? I always figured it was a feature that when you beat on the car it disables them for you. Guess I was wrong. Turning the car off and on again resets it until I take her to redline again. If I dont go to redline, it never comes on.
NineEreven's issue sounds like it was MAF-related - I can see the MAF producing an implausible signal when the car's moving that much air.
I still have this issue intermittently. It is worse when the battery is low after the car hasn't been driven for several days. When I drive it daily or leave the battery tender connected when it's idle, the issue doesn't happen on my car. It's weird, but not often enough for me to throw another MAF at it to see if the problem goes away.

Mine was the brake switch once and MAF once.
Brake switch:
When initially applying the pedal the brake lights worked, as I pushed it further, they went out. At a stop being held by brakes I had no brake lights. Replaced switch and lights worked correctly and PSM and ABS lights went away.
MAF sensor:
Immediately after an automatic touchless car wash PSM and ABS came on. They were intermittent. Removed and cleaned MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner from Autozone and let it dry thoroughly. PSM/ABS went away.
