And you would want to check the coolant in the reservior for any signs of oil droplets floating on top of the coolant.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 5Original post

Probably not a head gasket. Head gasket failures are quite rare. More common is a cracked head. As kromdom suggested: Cooling system pressure test. Not sure I'd spend money on a compression test. You report the engine runs fine and with no misfires compression has to be pretty good. You could send an oil sample out for a UOA. You would want to confirm there were no traces of anti-freeze compounds in the oil. And you would want to check the coolant in the reservior for any signs of oil droplets floating on top of the coolant. 'course, you can't rule out a coolant leak from some other source. More common than a cracked head is some coolant hose, fitting, oil/water heat exchanger leaks coolant.

POST 6Original post

Wouldn't the coolant leak be self contained when the head cracks? Thought that would only let it either mix with the oil or burn into the cylinders.
