Now, with so many being converted to track cars, used sport seats are easier to come by and cheaper.

Are they just filled with extra foam or is the frame also redesigned to keep the thigh support ?

Suggestion
The lower bolsters on the thigh area are significantly higher and more supportive on the sport seats when you compare to the standard seats (I found that I didn't have to use my legs to support my body when I was cornering during autocrossing).

Suggestion
I think you could buy an excellent used set of sport seats for about the same price or a couple hundys more give or take.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

NR Auto, mentioned on RT along with Champagne custom upholstery has these regular 996 to Sport seat conversion kits. Has anyone here looked into these kits? There is also Franzini Bros ( in Marin) that may have done these conversions.
I'm interested in buying some Sport seats, but instead of storing my stock ones, I'd pry prefer to mod them with one of these kits...plus the added benefit of keeping my stock power controls // heated option..
I'll be calling the company Monday AM to inquire some more about this kit...
I've seen these advertised in Excellence. They look pretty good, however, they seem a bit pricey. I think you could buy an excellent used set of sport seats for about the same price or a couple hundys more give or take. You could then sell your original seats to defray the cost.
I would spend my money on something else. For sport seats, the 996 has the seats that least matched this description. With the old 901, 964 and 997 seats; the sport seat option meant deaper bolsters on the sides of the upper and lower seat cushions. With the 996, the lower seat cushion was identical the regular seats and you just got the additional shoulder support. They weren't even as bolstered as much as the stock 997 seats. Invest in a used pair of Euro GT3 seats or 997 Sport Seats and have something that actually keeps you in the seat while cornering instead.
From what I can tell, the upper leather that's OEM shaped for the sports seats, the foam and the Sports Seat back is what's pieced together to make this mod. I'd like to keep my power / heated seat options, and it seems fully loaded Sports Seats are hard to find.
I'll make some inquiries and see what's up.
Here's a pic of some Sports seats, the lower bolsters don't look that much different than what I see on OEM seats. They do seem a bit higher. Are they just filled with extra foam or is the frame also redesigned to keep the thigh support ? I guess the best way is to see the seats in person.
I have both the standard seats and the sports seats which I swapped in. The lower bolsters on the thigh area are significantly higher and more supportive on the sport seats when you compare to the standard seats (I found that I didn't have to use my legs to support my body when I was cornering during autocrossing).
Why not go for a set of sport seats. They come up for sale from pretty frequently on the for sale section. They would only cost slightly more than those replacement uppers. I store my original seats in the basement. I have the intention someday to make them into a Grand Tourismo setup for my PS3. I just have to figure out how to wire up my power seats to work.
I think this is good advice. The conversion kits seemed to offer some value when these cars were newer and people were leaving them more or less stock. Now, with so many being converted to track cars, used sport seats are easier to come by and cheaper. The set I just bought cost me less than the conversion kit.
GL!
I just pm'd LJ about adding the heating option to non-heated sport seats..any advice there? maybe just a matter of transferring the heating elements over..hmmm
In general, do the used sports seats that come up for sale have the heating elements in them? I don't suspect that the heating element adds any significant weight.
If you're asking me, I'm sorry, I don't actually know. I pounced on the first set of graphite seats I could find, and didn't care about heating since my OE seats didn't have it either.
seat = very important safety item... adding some blocks of wood to the edges and calling them a new name doesnt seem like a good idea to me... get OEM - Tested seats or a seat made as a replacement... not an add on
just my .02
OK, made some calls, asked a few questions...the conversion is made with Porsche Sport seat foam padding, German quality leather patterned after the Sport seat specs for top and bottom sections, and a fiberglass seat back, or in case you don't want white gelcoat to Paint, a Porsche Sport seat back. Prices are all relatively totalling $1500-1800 for both seats.
I know, I know..you can buy complete Porsche Sports seats for about the same cost.. Except, I'd like to keep my memory seats/ heated seat / power forward sliding option. so there...
I have thought it out carefully, and will sit on this for a bit. I'm in no hurry to do this, just for the reason that I'm fighting the Dreaded Mod Bug.....
uh...ok....PSE hack mufflers, hella clear/smoked turn signals....3 spoke Tip wheel with black / silver crest, tip selector **** w/ blk /silver crest, black/silver hood crest, Carrera Classic 19's with black/ silver crest emblems. yeah......yeah..that's about it.....
I wsn't going to count the Techart body kit and the hard top I just scored, but hey, might as well add that to the expense account too!!
nice one....
the hard top definitely falls in the "see" part of that metaphor...
the car has a whole new "look" even though I've owned it a whole 4 months..
I just remembered, I did the IMSR and RMS in January...sheesh....
I never noticed the bolstering to be any better than the regular seats. You jsut get the additional shoulder support. Surprisingly if you check the Porsche parts catalog, the lower seat sections are exactly the same between the sport and non-sport seats. Hence why I always found the 996 sport seats to be disappointing. Of course for the price of this update, he could easily find a used pair of 997 sport seats that are a lot more bolstered. Even better, for just a little bit more he could buy a used set of Euro GT3 seats.
I was talking to a colleque, and he thought you could buy the backs from PCNA if you have the part number and have an upholstery guy remake the seat covers. And he thought it would cost a lot less. Any thoughts...anyone anyone, Bueller?
Anyone have part numbers?
a parts tech @ Suncoast gave me the part number for a Graphite back; I don't have it handy right now...IIRC cost was about $650+ each; which IMO is better than the fiberglass white gelcoat which NR Auto provides...
an ebay upholsterer can provide the pattern for whatever color you need for approx $250 - 300 for the entire L & R set in vinyl IIRC.... and the foam was also available from Suncoast IIRC for about $60-80 each...
that's pry the route I'd go in order to keep my original heat and power on my comfort seats...
remember, if you are going to try and reupholster on your own or maybe go to a nearby upholsterer to pick his brain on the work involved to do this changeover....my .02
search ebay for porsche seats; the seller is diamondmall....david; he's got the patterns; can do combinations in whatever material...
ok here's some part #'s I wrote down when I spoke to one of the boys at Suncoast
Sport seat Graphite back 996 521 083 020 05 approx $616
Sport seat cushion 996 521 535 03 approx $82
Sport seat leather DS 996 521 993 02 G10 $994; ebay $250 and up....
Thanks for the info. The seatbacks are still fairly pricey. Is that for one or for the pair? If that is for the pair that would seem to be the way to go.
