Did you replace with another sealed or some other bearing type?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Heard the pinion bearing is sealed like the IMS. Is this true and who has a replacement?
I would like to have a MKII one day but I have to replace the sealed bearings of the drivetrain. This is unacceptable IMO and would be changed at once!
Cory the answer is "Yes". I had my transmission rebuilt this past spring for a failed pinion bearing.
A new pinion bearing is available from Porsche (P/N 996-302-808-00-M100) and aftermarket suppliers like Pelican. Not cheap at about $450 to $500 IIRC.
Not an easy fix either as it requires a large press (someone said 30T) to remove the old and press on the new one.
I have done a lot of reading on this.. It also happens with out warning what-so-ever. It can empty at anytime.. and when it does.... You dont get any more fluid out of the washers.. YEAH I KNOW! Then I heard this also happens seconds before the IMS fails also.
OEM type sealed bearing. We discussed a non-OEM unsealed unit and the indie and his cup car transmission builder both indicated that this was not their preference. I accepted their responses at face value.
Nevermind, I found the bearing on Pelican. Wow! $457 for a sealed bearing?!?!
Unreal.......
I'll take one off of a skateboard wheel and use it......j/k
I guess the oil doesn't get around to it well enough because I can't think of another explanation why your indy and trans builder would say that. Bummer......
I believe that Motor Meister actually does a rebuild with a non-sealed unit, I remember seeing it on their site... I was counseled against that route.
FYI - the total cost to rebuild was not bad at about CAD 3,500 with a set of used planetary gears and new 1st and 2nd gear synchros and all installation labour.
Raby was working on a set of special bearings for the transmission when I spoke to him in the Fall of 2009.
Yes, all the bearings in the trans are sealed just like the IMS bearing and they fail the same exact friggin way. Do get them out before they completely go because they will take out your case when they seize up and spin in their race. I have a junk case on a shelf because of that.
