Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I took the cover off to access the top of the tank, and just double checked all the connections.
Leading evidence: 'Check connections' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'most likely is' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check connections' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Finally, I will be more careful to face Stuttgart whenever filling the tank.

Suspected cause
Probably the most likely is that the hoses inside the take are getting in the way of the float.

when the gas guage hit zero, did you check the fuel door for a chunk of garden hose hanging out of it?

Funny, I actually did think of that-- then I almost called home to ask my wife to check the garage for a puddle, but I figured that I would have smelled that.

Thanks guys--right now I am predicting a one-time event like the oil pressure hitting zero [when that happended my reflex was just to check the rear view mirror for smoke!]
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've had my car a little over 2 years now . . . I have had two common but surprising electronic glitches.
1. The "zero oil pressure" surprise. Happened just once a couple years ago and then never again.
2. Today I had a new one--empty fuel tank reading! I did not believe it, but rushed to a gas station to top it up. After topping, which took just a few gallons, it is reading full again. Hopefully just a random glitch . . .
As I tell people when they ask--My P-car has a soul, but I don't have my Toyota service department on speed dial!
The manual says that the gas gauge can show the wrong level if the battery was disconnected. I assume this wasn't the case?
Probably the most likely is that the hoses inside the take are getting in the way of the float. I have the issue that after I fill up (and the gas filler gun clicks) the gauge will still show slightly less than a full tank. Could be that the flapper inside is getting interfered with, not letting all the gas in, or, the float is being held down by the crazy snake hoses inside.
Take a look at this link for great picks of the snake hoses:

I filled the tank before with the key left in the "on" position and got a wierd thing like that... said near empty but was full... I never did that again and it never repeated.
hope your ghost was a one shot deal

OK, it's back. Driving home today, read correct (3/4 full) one minute, zero and blinking the second. I got a message that I think was something like "fuel sensor error" or "sender error". After driving a few more minutes it was reading correctly again.
Any guesses?
Thanks for checking in! I doubt it is the calibration topic that comes up pretty often. It seems like just a bad contact point on whatever device detects the level.
While I am not sure, I think that both times it happened the tanks was at about the same level. It reads fine above and below this level.
I am going to run the tank pretty low, then fill it up and see if it happens again.
Also. I took the cover off to access the top of the tank, and just double checked all the connections.
