Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Assembly requires a steady hand and proficiency with remote procedures since the piston pin clips are installed without direct hands on procedures...
Leading evidence: 'Install without direct hands' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install without direct hands' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Saw this 3.6 engine on Ebay this afternoon. Says it has hever been installed and still has the 2 year warranty. Starting price is $7,750. Might be a deal for someone, but I would not go much higher. 3.4's are up in price, but a 3.6 is not alot higher directly from Porsche.

No affiliation, just thought I would throw it out for anyones attention.
Dharn, you said that price (for a 3.6) isn't too much less than one from Porsche. Does Porsche sell reman'ed engines? I didn't know that. I can't imagine a new one from P going for any less than $15k.
I'd be game to build one myself. I've only rebuilt American, but I've seen some flat6 rebuilds, and it doesn't look that bad if you have a couple of the special tools.
I am offering an M96 engine engine assembly seminar in February 2010...
To see the details of assembling one of these engines follow this link to the assembly process on my site.
Trust me, assembly of this engine isn't for the faint of heart... There is nothing simple about it and even the order the assembly should be done in is very critical.. Make a mistake and the whole engine comes back apart.

Very cool, Jake, I would love to take that seminar. If you can you swing airfare for me, I'm in!
I'm a pretty meticulous engineer whose used to doing intricate jobs, so I'm sure I can handle it, BUT only with the right tips and info given to me first.
Very $$$ to 'learn as you go' on an M96 build! Haa!
I just remembered I have good friend who recently became a professor at Ashland. Maybe I could make a vacation out of it and take your seminar and see him at the same time.
Its the procedural aspect of this engine that will kick the *** of the best.. The first time I built one I screwed up, the second time I screwed up... BUT I caught the issues during assembly.
It was only because I had no one to tell me the simplest of things and there was no directive.. The factory manuals suck and have too many grey areas..
All it takes is some basic instruction and pointers of where the issues lie to be successful the first time around.. The proper use of the special tools is also a key, and the proper use means the simplest use- not what Porsche dictates.
This seminar filled in less than one weeks time after being posted on my site :-) I'll have another one in June 2010..
Good to know that even some of the best (you!) had some issues when first cutting your teeth on an M96. Now WE can learn from all of that experience and save ourselves the trouble!
By the way, it's still hard to believe that the pistons and wrist pins for one bank of cylinders needs to be joined the way they do (after the second half of the crank case goes on over the bearing carrier). That seems so hack! But I can't see any other way.
I want to go to your seminar!!! Maybe I can get someone to send me for a Christmas present.
The assembly procedure is funky the first few times you experience it.. Assembly requires a steady hand and proficiency with remote procedures since the piston pin clips are installed without direct hands on procedures... You also have to be proficient with a bore scope, have a steady hand and extreme patience. The first time I installed pistons in the M96 engine it took me 3 days to complete and I had to tear the engine down twice to fetch wild clips that I screwed up while installing them.
Neither of the mistakes I made would have been experienced if the factory directives/ manual was better written..
These same mistakes are made time and time again, even by Porsche Dealership technicians...
