If the #2 OS sensor indicates acceptable exhaust gas processing *not* taking place the Ecu will adjust its fueling to add or subtract fuel in an attempt to bring the #2 O2 sensor reading into spec.

For all car makers the EPA has a process that feeds it new and used cars and it tests these to ensure new cars meet the requirements and used car still continue to conform for thousands of miles.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It was the metric wire stretcher that did the trick.
While installing the high flow cats on my 996, I discovered that the O2 sensor bungs are in a different location on the high flow cats than the stock cats. It does not appear the wires for the O2 sensors will reach the new locations. Has anyone else dealt with this issue?
Tim, I knew I could count on you. It was the metric wire stretcher that did the trick. I rerouted the O2 sensor wires, starting at where they plug into the harness. Sometimes it helps to take a break and get a fresh perspective. This car already has too much cut, splice, and shrink tube....I couldn't subject it to any more. Thanks Tim.
Wait, your done.....?
that hardly seems to be fair... I am on multiple day #X for an AOS... (had to wait for parts as the "last one" local sold minutes before I wanted one... then had to make another trip for intake gaskets, and tomorrow for an o' ring.... then it should be up and running... CAN'T WAIT!
But your little thing.... BLAH !!
Naw, kidding, WTG on your fix....
Mfletch, which cats to you install? Did your old cats have problems? reason why I ask is because my cats don't last more then a year and half and need constant replacement. 1 goes and I am back in the shop, then the other goes and I am back in the shop. Lot of time wasted away due to this problem. I wonder if high flow cats will last longer and not be so prone to failure.
Ivangene, I had the AOS go on my previous (tip) 996. I worked a little overtime and paid someone else to do it. Even on a 6 speed car, it does not look like a fun job. Kudos on doing it yourself. Good luck.
Jumper, I bought a set of custom fabricated Magnaflow 400 cell cats. I got them for $400 and the quality is great. I never had problems with the stock cats. I hope your cat replacements were under warranty.
Here is a picture of them installed. They sound great, weigh about half, and make my clutch slip even more then the stock cats did.
Hi Ferdinand, thanks. The new cats sound great...about the same at idle and a little louder under acceleration. Between the CAI, and complete exhaust system, it's just perfect. All it needs now is a little blower whine.
to keeping emissions under the failing limit for thousands of miles. In some states an emissions test/check is required before one can register his car. For all car makers the EPA has a process that feeds it new and used cars and it tests these to ensure new cars meet the requirements and used car still continue to conform for thousands of miles.
The #1 OS sensor (ahead of the converter) is used by the engine controller to know it has control of the fueling. The Ecu constantly alternates between injecting too much fuel and too little. It does this by varying injector pulse width. The degree of rich and lean is very very little, though. The actual variation is just a tiny fraction on either side of ideal. This change in air:fuel ratio is reflected very accurately by the O2 sensor.
Ecu also monitors the #2 O2 sensor (which resides after the converter). It uses this sensor's signal to know the converter is adequatly processing exhaust gases.
If the #2 OS sensor indicates acceptable exhaust gas processing *not* taking place the Ecu will adjust its fueling to add or subtract fuel in an attempt to bring the #2 O2 sensor reading into spec. If it succeeds the adjustment (trim) is transferred to the long term fuel trim. If it does not and reaches the limit of its limit to richen or lean the mixture it records one or more error codes and turns on the check engine light.
If the Ecu detects an engine condition -- misfire most common -- that subjects the converter to excessive amounts of unburned fuel it will record one or more error codes and flash the check engine light. Converter is quickly and permanently damaged by too much unburned fuel in the exhaust gases.
Essentially the Ecu is there to feed the engine fuel based on the amount of air that the engine if everything ok will burn and produce exhaust gases of the right composition that the 3-way converter can process and render the more harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones.
This air:fuel ratio is approx. 14.72:1. There's a very narrow window on either side of this ratio then the converter's efficiency quickly deteriorates and emissions are out of tolerance.
Engines do not like this lean a mixture but are designed to function and function quite well with it.
In some cases an engine can be fed a richer mixture: cold start, high torque demand by driver but most of the time the engine is fed a 14.72:1 air:fuel ratio so the converter can most efficiently process exhaust gases.
Sincerely,
Macster.
