Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I don't intend to bid on this but found it interesting. It's an '01 Cab with 1,500 miles on it. I am concerned primarily about the low milage and potential for huge problems after not being driven. Also, will be more money than I want to spend on an '01 as I figure they want to sell it for around $32k. However, it's interesting. Why buy a car like this for a collection and never drive it? It's not like it's a super rare item!? It just seems odd. Plus, it has this warning that it was registered in a Fema storm damage area; do all cars registered in that area have that kind of warning? That sucks for them. If you buy the car it forever has that scarlet letter on it's Autocheck report, I guess!? Car looks nice but.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

POST 2Original post

Quote from the CARFAX... "DUPLICATE TITLE Reported registered/titled prior to storm event in FEMA designated storm area. We recommend a professional vehicle inspection to confirm no storm damage." Would sure want to have a thorough PPI done on this vehicle...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8730754

Ya, that one had me intrigued. What the heck does that mean? Is it implying the title was in the car and it got flooded? I just don't get what it's implying. The whole thing seems odd to me.

POST 4Original post

If you intend to buy it and stick it in a glass case and merely look at it then consider it a good car. On the other hand, if you chose to DRIVE it, then you are opening a massive can of worms. Any car that has been virtually untouched for ten years will be one problem after another. Things dry rot when in storage. Seals dry up, the engine will be a nightmare.

POST 5Original post

I've just never figured why some people buy a car like this and never drive it. OTOH, I know someone that owns a string of stores. He has more money than he knows what to do with. (really nice guy, btw) and he buys classic cars, or special sports cars with low mileage and just parks them in an underground garage that he has. I think that he goes down there to peruse his domain from time to time. But, other than driving some of them a few miles a month, he just likes the fact that he owns them. I guess that's what being a collector is all about. larry

POST 6Original post

Alternator is charging low. Coolant reservoir is a pretty yellow hue.

POST 7Original post

I wonder how old that gas is? If the motor did not have any issues it most likely does now after having varnish pumped through it.

POST 8Original post

It could become a wonderful driveway might-of-been. Amazing that something so beautiful could be so damaged by lack of exercise. One of the constants I hear over and over is how these cars need to be used (and used hard) to stay healthy. They are automotive athletes that must run or die.

POST 9Original post

For whatever reason, the left cupholder looks very used. I guess whoever had it in storage sat in it with a cup of coffee...

POST 10Original post

pics are heavily pshopped... (cleaner than it appears).

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 8731909

+1, Plus the drivers seat lower left "butt" bolster is worn way more than the miles indicate.

POST 12Original post

wow this guy really made a bad investment, paid $85k 10 years ago to try to get $40k today. He was only able to look at the car all that time..... he would have done better with a subscription to excellence and putting the rest of the money in the stock market!!

That's about where my Turbo's needle is when I have the A/C on. The needle goes up a bit (a needle width or a bit more) when I turn the A/C off. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 8730764

Titled *prior* to storm event. The car may have changed hands (the owner may have been the loan off even) and this just happened close enough to a storm event of note (in [a] FEMA designated storm area) that CarFax flags this just to cover its butt. But there's nothing wrong with being extra careful and diligent. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 15Original post

I also noticed that some of the interior shots showed more wear than I would expect for a car with so few miles. Maybe he just sat in it in his garage drinking coffee and listening to the radio...

POST 16Original post

I would never buy a car that old with that kind of mileage. I prefer higher mileage well maintained cars. My current 996 (2002) has 160k miles. Generally if a car's newer and has higher than average miles, your chances of those being actual highway miles are much better. Under 15-20k miles on an average 996, I imagine you're looking at all sorts of possible issues in the future from seals around the engine to A/C, water pump, expansion tank/hoses, tires, etc.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 8732290

Are you on your original engine?

POST 18Original post

I am on the original engine and transmission. Car's had window regulators, wheel bearings, ignition switch/expansion tank, a couple of hoses and (electively) the coil pack update in addition to the scheduled belt/waterpump/fluids changes and brakes several times. Otherwise trouble free.

POST 19Original post

Here's a shot from a few weeks ago to show you that I do use it a lot: The condition of the car is consistent with what I'd expect for around 60k miles and is in far better shape than most. I keep wanting to upgrade to a turbo or a GT car, but I've said that before so we'll see how long I'll hang onto this one...

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 8732779

That's awesome. I see a lot of boxsters with that kind of mileage but never a 996. Did you do the IMS upgrade? Do you go over 5k rpm a lot of just drive it like any other car?

POST 21Original post

Hah, no (though I've done it for other people). I do drive it like I drive any other car... Which means high throttle near redline several times an hour. I'm a trackday instructor, not that the two are necessarily correlated... Here's a video from my previous 911; You Tube that car's enjoying it's new owner (good friend) who also tracks it rather often. I did forget to mention that I recently put in a new starter, as the factory one was getting lazy when warm. Cheers!

POST 22Original post

It's not a deployable spoiler, it's a collapsible grill for keeping your chick-fil-a warm...

POST 23Original post

Run the other way! I, too, am acquainted with a "collector" who buys very low mileage high end cars and then just looks at them occasionally. Like most of this ilk, he does NOT maintain his cars regularly. He would be better served simply walking into his storage garage and burning up several $100 bills each day. relinuca

POST 24Original post

This one concerns me the most. Do you think the owner had any idea what he was doing on something that sat for so long, or do you think he just "fired it right up" after it was in storage? Hey Jim, turn that puppy over and let's go for a joy ride!!! LOL.

POST 25Original post

One thing you can do is check the tire manufacture date. If the tires are original (which they should be), check to see if there are any flat spots. If the tires are good, then it's a good sign that the car was moved regularily. If someone wanted to buy this, they definitely need a PPI and to change all fluids/belts. Probably do an IMS and RMS upgrade. If this car checks out, it deserves a premium. But I think most people would rather have a 25k mile MKII for the same money.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am posting about another Ebay auction, while I am at it, that looks bad to me. He doesn't reply to questions, has zero feedback, and is selling (with no reserve) about $15k below market value. It's a 997 so I will also post on that board. Just don't want anybody to get snookered by a "good deal" as I suspect it's not such a good deal! I could be totally wrong but it smells fishy to me. Yes, I reported it to Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

Hey Redridge, Just curious, What pics appear photoshopped? I didn't see any evidence, but I'm no expert. A few other notables... The radio ***** and buttons look beat up. (along with the cupholders). Also, there is stitching around the rear window. I don't think the factory window had any stitching, so I'm guessing it's a repair job. Finally, in the Q&A at the end, someone asks about the second key. The seller replies that there is only one key, but that this is a "very inexpensive thing". Apparently, he never tried to buy one. Overall, it looks shady to me. (Not that I'm buying). Someone has bid it up to almost $29k and still the reserve isn't met. I'd like to see if it sells...
