Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Mine also came on (1999 Coupe) so I cleaned buckles and light was off for awhile, but came back on.
Leading evidence: 'Clean buckles and light was off' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I am interested in cleaning, soldering, or improving the existing ones.

Suggestion
I figured it was worth a shot since the new buckles wee quite expensive to replace (> $500 I was told).

The kit includes new buckels and some gold connectors you need to replace under the seat.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In cases where the airbag light is caused by the seatbelt receivers, has anyone looked into the exact nature of the fault?
I understand there are grounding issues, but it the issue based on diminished contacts?, or broken contacts? Have the updated buckles actually been upgraded? additional circuits?, etc.
Rather than just spend the $$ on new units. I am interested in cleaning, soldering, or improving the existing ones.
Any input or advice?
BTW: The car in question here is a 1999 C4 Cabrio.
Thanks
I had my AB light come on in my 99 C2 cab about a month ago. I sprayed contact cleaner in the belt receptacles 2-3X , cleared the light with my Durametric and the light has stayed off since. I figured it was worth a shot since the new buckles wee quite expensive to replace (> $500 I was told).
Mine also came on (1999 Coupe) so I cleaned buckles and light was off for awhile, but came back on. So I bought new buckles but light came back on after awhile again..............I understand that one must do more.....I also understand that the system stills works (as a whole) but not the seat belt in question?????
Hope this helps.
C'ya,
Thanks for the input. Contact cleaner was going to be my first attack. Did you spray it down the receptacle or did you remove the buckle and clean it on the bench.
Part of me is reluctant to take the unit off for fear of making the problem worse.
Also I noticed that Pelican has a replacement for about $97. Does anyone know if this is the upgrade/updated version?
The issue is not in the buckle, its in the connections under the seat. there is a repair kit. Many have got away with using a conductive contact lube on the connectors Not just a cleaner.
Im not sure the exact casue but I think there must be a low voltage signal wire in there some where that gets noise on it from the connector. Or the tollerence is so little that the resistance from the old non gold connector is to blame. The kit includes new buckels and some gold connectors you need to replace under the seat.
Wow...I did a long writeup on this as my '99 C2 Cab had one of the first 996 issues, and it took Porsche sending an engineer to the US to sort it out after months of trial/error.

Is the upgraded wiring the pigtail coming off of the buckle? Or is it another Harness under the seat?
Perhaps some contact cleaner, followed by nice application of dielectric grease could reduce these problems. I also understand there is a ground partially at fault and that one of the fixes involves adding additional ground.
Does anybody know the details of this?
The first thing they did on mine was the wiring and contacts at the belt receptacle. Did not resolve.
Next was removal of seats to replace wiring harness.
Mine was "fixed" at the dealer. New updated receptacles installed and some other wiring work done. Worked for a yr and I got the light again. Got a durametric and a contact cleaner. I now clean and reset every time the light comes back - about every 3-6 months.
$500?!?!? When I replaced mine I wanna say I paid like $60-70 for driver side and $50-$60 for the passenger side...from the dealership. Are they really that expensive?
