Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I replaced my AOS in 2006 with the updated version (pre-emptive strike - car was beginning to show oil in that area).
Leading evidence: 'Replace aos in 2006' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace ...i'll drink my coffee at home thank you' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Actually, I HAVE replaced most of those, with the others pending.

Don't laugh - my cupholder just failed...$300+ to replace...I'll drink my coffee at home thank you.

Suggestion
Actually, other than the IMS, IMSB, flywheel and steering rack I have had to replace all of those things.

Well, that depends on the year of 996/997 in which you are replacing said AOS.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Probably didn't help to overhear the guys in the shop saying "this can't be, we can't have a GTS that isn't already purchased and this one has options deleted, it has to have been built for somebody".
So if your Air/Oil Separator is failing and you buy a new Porsche replacement, is the new one an improved design bound to last longer? Or, will it just fail again in the years to come?
Just wondering...
Well, that depends on the year of 996/997 in which you are replacing said AOS. There is an updated and better engineered part for the AOS.
Not sure what year it became standard on new 996/986.
And, yes, if your car is a perenial low mileage garage queen, it will fail again eventually. Even if your car is a daily driver, it will eventually fail. Everything fails... eventually.
I replaced my AOS in 2006 with the updated version (pre-emptive strike - car was beginning to show oil in that area). Car had 28,000 miles on it then. Car has 71,000 miles now. No AOS problems looming because I drive it a whole lot more now than then. A rolling stone gathers no moss.
But even the updated versions can fail. So I am planning on having it done again whenever I do the IMS/RMS and clutch/pressure plate/etc. upgrade (no prior problems in these areas) - hopefully that will all occure when the original clutch has finally worn out and not when any of the other possibilities occurs first. Since they are in there anyway...
There is a larger motorsport version for the 986/7 but don't think it fits the 996.
The 996 version got a redesign in 2002, but I've read about a few failures.
The 997 version is the same as the 996 redesign but not sure if it fits the 996 prior to 2002.
I've read about a person who "removed" the AOS, and made modifications for the engine to run without it. I think it was someone on pelican bbs. Oh yes, here it is:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-996-997-forum/571188-i-eliminated-my-aos.html
First one (the one that came with the new car (02 Boxster) from the factory) failed after nearly 80K miles in early 2004.
The second AOS lasted closer to if not to 100K miles. The 3rd one has been in there now approx. 64K miles and appears to be ok but the other two didn't give much warning.
In fact, the 1st one gave me very little warning, no warning really, and at the time the AOS failure was a rather rare event. One day the car was ok the next it felt kind of odd. I tried various things but to no avail. When the engine started smoking pretty heavily I gave up and called the dealer. The service manager diagnosed the problem over the phone: AOS.
The 2nd failure gave me about 2K miles warning (on a drive half way cross country) before it failed just about 2K miles from home. A check engine light when pulling off the freeway in Flagstaff (after driving there from Livermore CA). The next day when pulling off the freeway in Albuquerque (after driving over from Flagstaff). The next day I don't recall but the morning after that just about 2K miles from Livermore I fired up the cold engine after the car sat outside overnight parked in a motel parking lot. I knew this time what was going on.
They last what they last.
Sincerely,
Macster.
My AOS failed after ~105k miles in my 2001 C4. The replacement did look a little different and as long as it goes another 105k miles I won't really care.

If you believe everything you read on the web you'll need; AOS,RMS,IMS,IMSB,water pump, coolant tank, coil packs, clutch, flywheel, alternator, battery, brakes, steering rack, shocks, rotors, tires, and of course a new cupholder.
Actually, I HAVE replaced most of those, with the others pending. LOL! And since my '99 didn't come with cupholders I had to create a couple of those. LOL!
Still cheaper to replace all that over time than to buy a new 911 every few years just to have a warrenty.
Boy am I glad you said that! I guess I can stop considering buying (more like lusting after) the 2012 GTS that just so happened to appear at the dealer while I was there Wednesday. I think I can replace everything mentioned, plus a motor or two for the cost of that one. Seriously though - I wish the car hadn't arrived, makes no sense that I am so interested in it - but I am. Probably didn't help to overhear the guys in the shop saying "this can't be, we can't have a GTS that isn't already purchased and this one has options deleted, it has to have been built for somebody". But it is still there today looking as bad as ever.
No, I can't really buy it anyway - it would be sort of like saying "hey look honey, you can have the old one, and oh yeah, I won't be remodeling the 2nd house after all, I kind of like the open ceiling look and bathrooms without toilets. But hey, I got a cool car to drive."
I have read about the dreaded CHF (cup-holder failure) and I feel left out as my car has the rare motorsport option, from the Exclussssssive Programmmme, of a cup-holder delete. I am concerned, however, about all that I have read about the horrible cases of the Porsche logo embroidery failing on my cup jacket. Is this something to be concerned about...?
(The AOS question is a legitimate one, BTW... just havin' fun.)
