I always thought that it was an affectation when people used driving gloves.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 996TT has the full carbon fiber treatment. I think that it really looks cool, and now have experienced my first crack in the plastic on my steering wheel. OK, it's not so bad, just annoying that such an expensive option has this failing. For the last couple of days in the Chicago area, the weather has been in the upper 90's. The thermometer in my car says that it's 102. Well, I got into the car, expecting the car to be hot. But when I reached for the shift ****, I nearly burned my hand. THAT SUCKER IS HOT!!! So, I started the car, and put the A/C on HIGH. Reached for the steering wheel to start pulling out of the parking lot, OUCH, THE STEERING WHEEL IS HOT, TOO!!!! As a matter of fact, the only part of the steering wheel that I can touch is the part that is covered in leather. Thank goodness, or I would have had to wrap something around the wheel to be able to drive my car. I guess that it's time to buy a pair of driving gloves. I always thought that it was an affectation when people used driving gloves. But I guess that now I know a reason to use them, although I am sure that is not the TYPICAL reason why people buy them. What a pain. larry

POST 2Original post

In 100 degree F temps, with my carbon wheel I would put sun shades against the windshield while parked, helped dramatically with being able to grip it before it would cool down. (couldn't resist)

POST 3Original post

A windsheild sunshade makes a huge difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!

POST 4Original post

Sunshade or drape a clean large beach towel over the dash/steering wheel. Be careful with leather seats and seat backs. I read a story in a car mag about a Death Valley tourist wearing short pants sitting down on a leather seat in a car that had been parked in the sun for a while and the shock/pain of the heat caused him to jump up that was an even bigger mistake as some of the skin from the back of his upper legs stuck to the leather. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 6Original post

Very happy with the Porsche factory sun shade. Perfect fit and it lowers the interior temp dramatically.

Good suggestion, guys. I'm off to Home Depot/Bed Bath and Beyond/AutoZone this weekend. I'll find something. larry

POST 8Original post

Here in sunny South FL, I have found an even better solution than the windshield sunshades. My 996 Cab is usually in the carport or garage when I'm home. I don't mind running errands in it and such and I do have the collapsible window sunshades for temporary relief. When I go to work, my car is left in a wide open, safe, parking area. And as most of us have experienced in the last weeks or so, temps have been 100+ F...outside. I happened to google car cover, since I wanted to protect the fabric top, I came upon a tyvek cab cover. Basically, ALOT smaller than a car cover, with some water resistance. It is held down by the wipers, two elastic side mirror covers and has an elastic cord that stretches the fabric all the way to the engine cover. I found a seller on ebay; IIRC, $70 shipped. I tried it out and it frigging works!! Everything in the car is dramatically cooler; in other words, nothing inside is hot to the touch. Anyway, I don't have any affiliation, but if you search ebay for PopTop sunshade you'll see some pics.... the sunshade collapses into a small ball (b-ball size) that fits easily in the frunk. Just a thought for you that may want to protect the interiors when parked outdoors.

You mean something like this? I had one of these for my Z3 years ago and it was awesome for keeping the heat out. It was worthless in the rain and snow but great at keeping dirt off of the top and heat out of the car in the summer. -Eric

POST 10Original post

^ yes similar, but I've noticed the tyvek does keep the top dry even in some heavy showers. here's the pic from ebay
