Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Check Engine Light came on. Was talking with a service tech at Walters Porsche Dealership (Riverside, CA) he said that there was nothing to worry about if everything else was reading OK, temp, oil press, etc. But if it was on and Flashing, problem! Was wondering if anyone had a gotten the same answer or is he full of ____! Car as 100780 miles, 2004. Will be getting a OBD dignostic interface from Santa. Hope it not too late. Thanks in advance. Ed 12/24/10 Still waiting for the OBD to be delivered but yesterday when I filled with gas and restarted the engine the light went off...... Will still read the code when the part arrives. Thank all who responded and I guess it might have been a loose gas cap Marry Christmas to all. Ed

POST 2Original post

Yah I'd just plug a my durametric in. It already saved me from wondering too long when a check engine light was found before leaving work. I got it from the error that shows up when over filling the gas tank. Didn't notice a cel going to work but it was there leaving. Whatever you are getting I hope it resets cel's.

POST 3Original post

thats the same thing the manual says.... i think he was being straight with you.. So guessing.... was it running OK? rainy/wet out? any repairs since new? (cats, cam pads, plugs, coils?) you can get a free scan at a lot of places, just call ahead and ask (though I have never done it)

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I put in a new oil pressure sending unit a month ago. Stopped the light and helped with the idle. This is a new occurance sense the sending unit replacement. Is running fine. thanks, will just watch it close till I get the scanner and read the code.

POST 5Original post

I know if you top the fuel off doing the thing where you keep pumping more and more in it causes an overflow that goes into a cannister to shut some valve once the cannister gets its fill. Being warm here I figure mine evaporated the gas quick enough to not throw the light on from the problem again after resetting the error. Good luck on what the problem is. The oh "shucks" with these cel light times of all of us is a rough time for sure. Real nice to have your own reader for sure.

Take it to a shop you know.... lube shop etc. SOme guys out here will still check your codes for you. Or spring for the OBDII at O'Reilly (around $80). The tech is right, flashing=bad, light on=bring in when you can. Could be a vaccum line, CAT, anything simple. Walter's has been good to me so far with both the Audi and Porsche.

POST 7Original post

Try not to drive it too much until you have it properly checked. Most of the time (at least on my experience) is the gas cap not closed correctly or needing replacement. Get it scanned and avoid any surprises later

POST 8Original post

Cheap insurance, buy an OBDII reader keep it in the trunk. Donate to RennTech.org, print out a list of codes for your car and keep a copy in your trunk. When light comes on read code look it up and erase it and be on your way. No waiting at the dealer, no cost to read the code, no sweat as to what is wrong. Most codes are nothing to worry about.

POST 10Original post

Fyi, when my AOS failed, I had a slightly erratic idle - nothing bad, just not the rock steady idle it normally has - and then the Check Engine Light came on. I had a friend read the code and then look up what the code meant. It pointed to the AOS indirectly. Point being, the light coming on - even steady - can indeed be a fairly serious issue.

POST 11Original post

Majority of the time the CEL on steady it's a emission related fault. When CEL flashes it's usually misfire or something else that can damage converters.

POST 12Original post

Codes can be deceiving. A friend's 996TT had a catalytic fault code that eventually turned out to be the MAF. That is a big difference...

Hope I'm not parroting what others have posted, but the tech is half right. While there is no need to immediately shut off the engine when the CEL comes on it does indicate something's not right. Now it may be a loose gas cap, or something as minor as this, or it can be the early warning signs something more serious is about to go wrong. Best advice I can offer is to if the engine is not exhibiting any other untoward behavior, not making any bad/wierd or new noises, to continue driving the car, but of course if at any time if the CEL starts to flash or the engine does start to exhibit untoward behavior shut off the engine first and ask questions later. Preferrably questions that don't require you run the engine any. Leave that to the experts to do as they diagnose the source of the symptoms. But if the engine continues to behave at your earliest opportunity get the codes read and write then down then research the codes' meanings'. Loose gas cap? Leaking oil tube filler cap? Or some other intake air leak? Or something more serious but still if caught and dealt with early enough not engine threatening. Sincerely, Macster.
