I don't drive the car very often, and I was too tired after work to go on the freeway and check the speeds/rpms for each gear, plus I needed gas and just wanted to go home.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I went on a trip 2 weeks ago with my girl and she put her earings in the shifter area (the leather part). I left them there because I knew if I moved them I would misplace them. So they've been sitting there for 2 weeks, and I just make short trips to the gym, and the store and once in a blue moon to work. I was driving home from work the other night and it was 42 degrees outside, and I shifted into what I thought was 5th, but felt like 3rd and I thought the rpm seemed rather high for 5th. I don't drive the car very often, and I was too tired after work to go on the freeway and check the speeds/rpms for each gear, plus I needed gas and just wanted to go home. But now I'm worried something might be wrong. I've got a B&M ssk in there and the gears are so close together, I feel like I might be putting it in 3rd twice when I park the car and try to shift into every gear. I was also out "drifting" in our recent rain storm a week ago, and I don't know if I could have fouled up a transmission mount? It was all very graceful slides on to onramps.

POST 2Original post

The back of the owner's manual has the speed and RPM range per gear. I've got an '01 tip and its in 5th gear more often than not, for reasons of fuel economy I suppose. From '03 user's manual: Tiptronic Manual

POST 3Original post

Just drove home and in 5th at 64 on the speedo (really 60mph), it's just a touch under 3K. Rick 99 996C4 87 944S

If you came out of 4th at redline you would know the answer instantly

Redline for me in 4th = 128 MPH. 3rd = 103. I have no ear rings.

POST 7Original post

there ya go... 128 mph, stick it in and pray for 5th!

POST 8Original post

5th at 60 is just under 2600rpm or 2700. Car feels like it bogs down....I usually use 4th up to 65mph on the Hwy. Not to highjack...this past year at Road America going into T1, I got in 5th before the turn at 139 and got a little mixed up downshifting into 3rd. Thought I had 3rd but grabbed 1st for a millisecond of a millisecond. Almost did the so called money shift. Won't do that again.
