Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

28 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello All: Does it make sense to start to use my Garage Queen '99 Cab as a daily driver? It has 28k miles and is in mint condition. I bought the car in March and have put less than 500 miles on it since. It is just hard to find the time to drive her more than a bit on weekends. My lease on the Cayenne is up and I am considering using the 996 as my primary car. My question is whether it is worth all the (potential) trouble? You hear all the nightmares of low mileage garage queens turning into major trouble with the daily grind. I drive 20 miles each way in stop and go city traffic.

POST 2Original post

YES 2 questions: what did you buy it for who are you saving it for go drive it

POST 3Original post

I bought my 04 C4S that had only 21K miles on it to use as a DD, so the answer is definitely yes. That said, there's no reason why you can't also keep the car in really good condition. If you drive in heavy traffic and are worried about chips you could always install a clear bra. For the interior you can get a window shade if you don't have covered parking and be sure to condition the interior more frequently.

POST 4Original post

Drive it... It's a reason to look forward to going to work and coming home at night

POST 5Original post

I just sold my '99 Cab in June which had only been used for a weekend fun car the last 7 years. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it daily providing the weather is good and you will not leave it in the hot sun all day. My car had 60k miles and all the leather and interior looked like a well kept 2-3 year old car as did the outside. No one could believe it was a '99. The sun and ozone is the enemy. Another note, keep it clean, but don't over clean it. I've seen many people over clean to the point of scrubbing the clear coat off and damaging lots of other surfaces, rubber, etc. Too much, too often and too aggressive is far worse than infrequent cleaning.

POST 6Original post

I drive my C4S daily. Dont save it for the next guy. Go enjoy it. Life is short...

POST 7Original post

Drive it! Nothing puts a smile on my face after a hard day, like jumping in my car and hearing the flat 6 purr behind me. Driving bliss.

POST 9Original post

Well, tires and brakes definitely make the 911 a high priced commuter car.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What about the depreciation in value? The car currently is in mint+ condition, I am concerned the daily commute will substantially lower the resale values as well as making it more difficult to sell.

POST 11Original post

The 996 has pretty much hit rock bottom on residual value and is not destined to become "rare" in any way. Drive that thing!

POST 12Original post

Our cars are depreciating in value driven or not. Drive it and enjoy it!

POST 13Original post

If you are looking for an investment, a 996 is a poor choice. This car was meant to drive, not appreciate in value. Just drive it and maintain it.

POST 14Original post

Is that a parachute coming out of the rear of your car? Your car will depreciate like a rock whether you drive it or not, so you might as well enjoy it. I've made the mistake of babying cars and never driving them, and it didn't help a bit when it came time to sell or trade.

POST 15Original post

Just remember, the cost per mile goes down with every mile. Drive it! It costs you more to let it sit.

POST 16Original post

Drive that sucker! What's the point of having a mint condition Porsche if it just sits? I think you'll find it to be an excellent daily driver.

POST 17Original post

Not driving a Porsche is like not having sex with a beautiful woman in order to save her for her next boyfriend!

POST 19Original post

It looks to be in great condition as you said, but the 99s and tip are hurting your resale anyways so go drive it all you want! I personally do not like driving my toy car everyday as it takes away from the "vaca get away" experience.

+1 What he said +1000 Definately what he said!!!

POST 21Original post

I bought my current '99 996 in 2004 from the original owner. He only put 7200 miles on it in the first 5 years. It was kept covered in a garage, driven only nice days, no track time. So I got a really nice condition almost new Porsche for less than half what he paid for it. Since then I have put more than 50,000 more miles on it, participated in dozens of DE's at 6 different world famous tracks, shot the Tail-of-the-Dragon several times, gone to many races and events at far flung locations, driven on the beach during Spring Break, etc, etc, and I drive it 25 miles each way to work. It still won best in show at a recent PCA concours d'elegance. His depreciation = $50,000 My depreciation = $25,000 Who has had more fun with his 5 years of ownership? DRIVE THAT CAR! Yes, I know it is your baby, you just got it, this is the love of your life, you don't want anything to happen to it... DRIVE IT! If you can't bring yourself to drive it every day, then you may as well just park it in front of your house as an Object D'Art and at least derive the pleasure from knowing your neighbors really hate you. Or, if you can't bring yourself to drive it, then keep it hidden in the garage a couple more years, and one of us will steal it from you when you sell.

POST 22Original post

Do yourself...and your Porsche a huge favor, "Drive it", you'll both benefit. Don't save it for the next owner. Also I'd add that other early 996 owners, myself included, are not having issues other than routine maintainance, and wear and tear items. I only have 51,500mi. on my 99', others have double those miles and more.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 7713130

The car only has 28K miles. It is very low mileage for that year anyways and don't think it will hurt / effect much on future resale values even you put in another 20K+ miles. If you have a 993 then is a different story...

POST 25Original post

Hell yes, look at my avitar. Your 99 w/tip is not going anywhere but down. Drive the wheels off it. For a reality check see what a dealer will give you. Mine has 75K on it.

POST 26Original post

+996 on driving it as much as possible! Enjoy it and take care of it at the same time; get to know all the good and not so good things of 996 ownership. Find out what it's worth right now; if your looking to upgrade and want to negotiate a decent trade-in value that's your call....but for Ferry's sake, don't let it sit ...
