When the wrong one was installed on my car, there were 2 things that were problems.

They first shipped me part number 45182, which fit like yours, so the shop called B&M and we determined it was the wrong part (I believe it's for a Boxster).
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Local shop wants 300 bucks to install the under carriage B&M ssk. Is that reasonable?
The instructions for this unit is crap.. Pictures are blurred.
Help!
I have the under car kit, and it is much easier/quicker to install than the in car. Takes under an hour, and no fine tuning required. $300 is a rip.
The instructions are pretty bad, and the pictures look like they've been photocopied 20 times. Here's a thread with pix from my install:

thanks poursha... I've seen your link and will use the diagram as reference.. How about some step by step instructions.. Do I need a special tool or does the link/rod just pop off? I want to get as much info as i can before I actually jack the car up and get under it..
agreed, 300 bucks is a rip for a bolt on part..
Is there an OEM part so I don't have to worry about warrantee issues (I know B&M makes the Porsche SSK and they're identical)? If I get some garage ramps will I have enough room to get under the car and install?
Thanks for the help.
The 2 round-tipped pieces where the gear cords attach to the trans just pry off. On my '04 Carrera, the underside is covered with aero panels and you need to remove 3 of them, so doing this yourself (even with a jack and jack stands) is not feasible--you need a lift, so I had it done at an independent shop. You need a few torx drivers.
so basically, unless I have access to a lift i'm SOL???
Let me see if my 03 has the aero panels.. If it does I might have to bite the bullet and pay the shop 300 bucks..
unless anyone else has any ideas..
yea, I think thats what i'll have to do.. Selling it to get the in car version is not an option.. too much trouble.. I've only heard good things about the under car kit.. Hopefully I can wheel and deal with these guys..
Ok I just got my B&M ssk installed by "Autobahn" in fairfax Va. Great bunch of guys.. Only cost me 150
I think I have it set on 30% if the top most hole is 30%. I'm not really sure how I like it. The shifting is definitely alot shorter but requires more effort and feels stiff. I'm not sure if it will soften up over time (doubt it). Like someone mentioned, I really have to make a conscience effort to really shift to the right gear. The hardest for me is going from 3rd to 4th, it really feels stiff and notchy unlike before. Is this normal for everyone else? Should I just pull really hard and fast or is that bad for the tranny?
I was thinking maybe I could select the 20% option hoping that it would soften the feel. Now that i've seen it done i'm pretty sure I can make the adjustments myself.
Also, what I noticed from my B&M unit from Poursha's was that my piece has a slight angle to it where as his was flat. Does anyone know if I purchased the wrong shift kit or possible an older model. It appears that the old pivot ball on the shift arm is suppose to plug right into the extra hole on the B&M shift adapter.
but mine doesn't bc of the slight angle.
What do you guys think? Do you think it will soften up if I back it down to 20%?
Here are some pics..
yea but I don't think the block goes in any other way. The stud has to be pointing out and on Pourshas post the B&M emblem is facing out. I just think its the wrong unit or an old model where the bottom portion flanges out..
Let me search ebay for the shifter you are talking about..
Is your ssk notchy or hard to shift?
redduck they are black full leather seats. they were taken out of my GT3 before i even took delivery. sitting in my garage in the GT3 seat boxes. they are brand new.
let me know if you are interested.
You have the wrong unit--this happened to me as well. They first shipped me part number 45182, which fit like yours, so the shop called B&M and we determined it was the wrong part (I believe it's for a Boxster). They shipped me part number 45183, which is flat, not bent at the bottom like yours. Probably why your shifting feels the way you describe--the gear cable on yours is bent once it comes out of the sleeve, which causes friction--not good. Here's a pic of mine:
Also be sure they install the locking plate--see pic below:
Mine is slightly notchy, good/not bad! It shifts easy. I have the porsche in car unit, I paid 300 for it, well worth it! It's an easy diy install, <1hr.
Remember, when porsche does an ssk, it's in-car only, must be a reason.
For the under car shifter I have some clear simplified installation instructions if anyone wants a copy. It's a zipped 600k .doc file. PM me your email address and I'll send it. It also shows the difference between the Carrera and turbo shifters.
But really, are you sure its bending? It appears that the bend doesn't occur until after the ball joint right? The only thing i'm worried about is that the original ball joint doesnt feed into the shift kits pre-drilled hole..
I spoke to Brandywine months ago about this shift. Was told that there are 5 different versions. I asked the guy to look at a few and he said the difference was the mounting bracket for the shift cables. This makes sense to to me as a Boxster owner as the 5 speed is different than a 6 speed, and a 6 speed Boxster is different than a 6 speed 996. So that is 3 versions there.
The GT2/Turbo and GT3 are the 4th and 5th version.
tool, so you are saying that mine is ok even thought there is a slight bend in the shift adapter? THe bracket appears to be ok and aligned will..
thanks

c4s, is this the one you are talking about?

I just compared your shift with the picture from Russ, and the blue aluminum part is different. Yours does have a bend. Contrary to what Brandywine told me. They should be the same because you both have the same transmission.
Looks like Russ is right, you have the wrong one. This is his picture. The left is the correct one, and the right is the wrong one. Yours looks like the one on the right. Check your part number and see if it goes with the one Russ says is the correct one.
When the wrong one was installed on my car, there were 2 things that were problems. First, the cable was bending as it came out of the sleeve, so over time would probably fray, and likely will cause shifting to be harder. This is caused by the bottom of the blue part being bent, and also the mounting bracket was different. Second, the bottom (being bent to the right) didn't fit into the ball on the trans, so all the shifting pressure is being absorbed by the 4 screws, without the benefit of the ball.
