i found though the possibility that the OPC said to change the pads for no reason a bit out of the way....these kind of things do create the good or bad reputation of each dealer-mechanic-person....etc....

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Seems a little early but maybe not for the front brakes. Cost sounds high to me. I paid $283 at the dealer to replace the front brakes on my 01 Boxster S at 27,000 miles, rears were OK.
My guess is that the dealer is just doing his job (for the dealership) and trying to drum up business. I remember on my BMW, I had just replcaed all 4 brakes with discs 3,000 miles before I brought the car in for a free oil change. I got a call at home and they told me I need a complete brake job at $600 per axle. Needless to say, I never went back to that dealer.
Brake life depends on how you drive. If and when you do replace the brakes (and it will be the front ones first) I would replace pads and rotors. Each wheel has a pad wear sensor on it that will alert you when the brakes need replacing. If they are working fine...leave them alone.
I have more than 45,000 miles on my orginal brakes.
brake pads change intervals are not prespecified....as oil changes....
when i first got my 964, the car had 108000 klms on the clock....
the pads that the car come with did last 45000 klms on my hands and i cannot verify how long they have been on the car be4 i bought it....may be 1000 klms or 10000klms or even more......
after the first change i did start track days and i bacame more agressive on driving the car......
brake pads change intervals in the end went down to 20000....klms....!!!!!
it is common sense then that brake discs life was shortened as well......
but there is as well another possibility that the brake pads are not in good condition...i.e if you are very hard on brakes from cold, or even hard braking when driving and not gently on the brake pedal, u might cause brake pads to miswear....but this possibility has to do more with the brake disc and a lot less with the brake pads....
i found though the possibility that the OPC said to change the pads for no reason a bit out of the way....these kind of things do create the good or bad reputation of each dealer-mechanic-person....etc....
u can say to them your thoughts and discuss with them...they will be ( or they should) be very helpfull to u....
I'm shocked. I've had two 996 cabs that were/are daily drivers with 50k+ miles and have never needed new brakes. Has the car been used on any DE events; that could account for brake wear above the norms
They probably put your car in the air an noticed the pads were low on material. Its almost impossible to say how long anyones pads are going to last because of a persons driving style. Dealerships will tell you that you need new front brakes because if they see you are low on pad and 10 miles down the road your light comes on in the dash, you wont get upset and wonder why they didnt tell you about it while you were there
That being said, I would say average life of front brakes on a 996 is ~30k miles..
Its all relative to how the car is being driven, some people are more aggressive and some are more conservative therefore brake and tire wear will vary a good deal.
if the light comes on the rotors are gone. If the car is/was tracked the brakes go quickly.
That is not true. The pad sensor should activate before any damage to the rotor occurs. However, I make it a habit of putting new rotors on cars when I replace the pads anyway.
