Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'weight distribution' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'weight distribution' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Use wheelspin as an aid' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Turning PSM off will allow you to use wheelspin as an aid but that should be only as a last resort.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So my wife and I were trying leaving the house yesterday in the SUV and found the driveway was too slick to get out of given the recent snow in NJ. We were trying to back it out of the driveway up a slope and only the rear tires were spinning the front were doing nothing, so we gave up.
Really pissed I took the C4 out of the garage and tried to back it out as well and it seemed to have gotten stuck but I didnt try to hard to get it out. So I turned it around and had success going forward.
So my question is, does AWD on all cars/trucks only work when moving forward? I asked my wife who was watching what was going on with the Porsche and the SUV, but she didn't seem to sure about which tires were spinning.
By the way the C4 is great in the snow with the blizzaks on, but I've never really driven in reverse in the snow with it.
Bob
no, works in both directions. P-car seems to have benifitted from even more weight being put over the rear wheels by having the nose uphill.
What kind of drive system does the SUV have? Part-time? Full Time? some full time systems only drive one wheel unless you lock the transfer case. any traction control?
Works both ways. Take that thing out of PSM in deeper snow or when you seem to be getting stuck. Somehow it works better that way, doesn't constantly brake spin, brake spin. Turn it back on in everyday driving. It says that in my C4 manual also.
Thanks for the advise, I'll take the PSM off next time, but forward was really the trick (even with it on). Perhaps it was the weight distribution. The SUV is an Escalade, and frankly I have no idea how the AWD works, the manual says it figures it out, but it didn't seem like the Escalade figured it out in reverse. I am/was very impressed with the C4 in the snow though.
I know this is an old thread. But...
In reverse there is less traction because the tires are directional. In reverse its like trying to dig a hole with a shovel thats turned around.
Rather than turn PSM off it might be better to use it as a guide for determining just how much traction is available. An experienced driver will know how to "feather" the throttle right up to the point of breaking traction, wheelspin/slip, but not beyond.
Turning PSM off will allow you to use wheelspin as an aid but that should be only as a last resort.
