Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My '02 996 just went in for the leak, new engine was ordered and just installed yesterday.
Leading evidence: 'Install yesterday' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install yesterday' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

EDIT: BFD atleast you don't have a 951 that needs a oil pan gasket and balance shaft seals for $2200 on a $12K car or a 930 or 964 that needs a $5000 reseal on a $20K car HAHAHA

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ever so slight oil leak lead me to take it in to the dealer. A quick look identified ANOTHER RMS leak. The first occured at 25K. This one at 37.6K. Dealer is looking to charge about $1100! The service guy said they now have a new tool which binds the seal tighter - as if!
Luckily it is covered on the extended warranty from Warranty Direct. I'll let you know how it goes when the service center and the warranty company talk tomorrow...
I hope this is not an every 10K mile issue.
Why didn't the dealer offer to install a new engine? My '02 996 just went in for the leak, new engine was ordered and just installed yesterday. My questions are this:
1) Do you think the new engine will still have this problem? Although a new engine, will it still have this inherent problem? Hmmmmmm.
Porsche developed a tool to measure the concentricity of the crankcase. If your crankcase passes, you get a new seal, if not, a "new" engine. If your engine has an "X" after the VIN, it is a remanufactured engine - not a new engine. As to whether it could leak again, no reason that it couldn't. It's still the same engine with the same design flaw.
to lazy/drunk to read every post. Yes there is a new updated RMS seal installer. It sets the correct depth in the end of the case. make sure you tell them to check that the crank flange is centered in the case. OK second...If you have had it done in the last 2 years or 24K miles...yippie skippy...it should be under a Porsche parts warranty

Does anybody have a diagram of the 997 block. A poster mentioned they made a change from the 996. Could it be to mitigate the RMS issue.
I like the 997, but I'm gun shy as hell...
THE FACTORY HAS A SPECIFICATION FOR THE DISTANCE THAT A CRANKSHAFT CAN BE OFF CENTER FROM THE CRANKCASE BORE IN THE BLOCK.THE MEASUREMENT IS .3MM,WHEN MEASURED AT 3,6,9,AND12(THINK OF A CLOCK FACE)USUALLY,IN M Y EXPERIENCE THE LARGER DISTANCE WILL BE AT ABOUT 12 O'CLOCK.WHEN UNDER WARRANTY THIS WAS ENOUGH TO GET YOU A NEW ENGINE.LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES.GENE
