Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

just a quick question: why are they so expensive? is there anything inside the pipe or is it just two bent pieces of pipe and 2 exhaust tips welded on with a lot of markup?

POST 2Original post

Just some very well made pipes. I've got them on my car, it's wicked loud. Not for the faint of heart or ears. I love them, use them on my daily driver and it's fun...quite a novelty. Plus you do loose some weight in the rear with dropping the mufflers. Not sure what they weigh on a GT3, but on a standard C2, it was just under 60lbs.

POST 3Original post

exactly what i was thinking - i was contemplating going to a muffler shop and having them fabricate some similar bypass pipes. now the question is whether the muffler shop will charge me just as much

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

are these pipes any less loud than just removing your mufflers and leaving it be?

POST 5Original post

i would at least try to put something in place that makes it look like you have mufflers, or a tail pipe....cause you might get pulled over for that

POST 6Original post

I don't think it's necessary to put something in place to make it look like you have mufflers...however, I do think it's important that you redirect some of the heat by way of a bypass pipe from your cats. You could talk to a muffler shop who can fabricate something up for you to try out to see if you'll like it. It shouldn't run more than about $100.

POST 7Original post

Let's say I want to go hardcore on a 996.. How would the car sound if you asked a muffler shop to design a whole system without even cats or mufflers? Horrible?

POST 8Original post

It would sound WICKED loud...my car is LOUD...most guys can't handle it. Seriously, I would say it sounds very close to a GT3 CUP car. Without cats...wow...!!! I won't do a cat bypass because I am still in warranty. (And naturally sunny green california) If you go out to the Fabspeed site, you can hear a clip of what it sounds like...it's close...but not the whole cigar by any means. As I mentioned previously...it's not for those who have concerns with rattles and resonance and a nice smooth ride. It changes all that.

POST 9Original post

Is this the one? http://www.fabspeed.com/996%20GT3%20...ss%20pipes.wmv OMG! That sounds soooooo goood!

POST 10Original post

Yes, that is the one. I can only say that when one is on it...either outside of my car or in it...it's jaw dropping!!! I love it...!!

POST 11Original post

A couple of points. First, I had the bypass pipes made for my race car for $60. This included fairly nice SS tips. The Fabspeed version is much nicer but this proves they can be had for much less. I originally had a test set without tips made for $20 at the local muffler shop. Second, you can't just remove the mufflers. The pressure from the exhaust coming out of your cats will make a horrible sound against the side of the car. Third, make sure you do something extra to secure your homemade pipes to the cats. The collars will work their way loose and you don't want a big chunk of metal falling off while you're booking down the freeway. Finally, your 996 has sensors before and after the cats. If you remove them it will assume that the cats are failing and will trigger a check engine light. You can get around this but it is something to consider. Jim

POST 12Original post

The fabspeed pipes are very well made and the seams and bents are flawless. The pipes and tips look OEM when installed. Unfortunately, they were a little too loud for me on my cab with the top down. I tried putting one pipe on and it was much better. However, I am going with the PSE although I'll miss losing the 60lbs. Email me at [email removed] if you are interested.

POST 13Original post

" I tried putting one pipe on and it was much better." You are kidding aren't you?

POST 14Original post

RobynC: Are you going to THill on Aug 9th? I would like to hear the exhaust first hand, if it is anything like the sound bite on their site, they're a must!

POST 15Original post

Yes, I'll be there. We can go out for a little jaunt around the track so you can tell what it's like in the car if you'd like. It is very much like the Fabspeed site...then some...that is all I can say.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

oceanbluecab..you've got mail

POST 17Original post

>> I tried putting one pipe on and it was much better. >You are kidding aren't you? No, I actually did it just to hear how loud one bypass pipe was. It wasn't anything permanent since the tips don't match and the weight distribution would not have been right.

POST 18Original post

Ocean, Actually the problems you would have created would have been much more than weight distribution and matching tips. How your engine expels exhaust is very important. You don't want one side doing it differently than the other. Jim
