Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have noticed that when I run my car especially hard that when I get out I smell a distinct oil burn smell. My car seems to have no leaks, maybe a seap from a gasket but no real spot on the floor leaking problem. Does anyone else have this same smell? Is it normal?

POST 2Original post

Yes if you have winter tires, or is it brakes your smelling?

POST 3Original post

I noticed a "burning" smell just after bringing my used 996 home. Many listers have reported a similar smell and the general consensus is that it is burning cosmoline. Search for "cosmoline smell".

POST 4Original post

It's relatively normal. On reading many many threads in this forum on the subject, some have suggested that letting the car idle for a minutes upon parking helps to dissipate this smell. FWIW, my 2000 Cab sometimes has that smell. Alternatively, my father's 2004 C4S sometimes has that very subtle smell, and I wouldn't necessarily characterize it as oil. Unless it REALLY smells like a burning oil or coolant odor, you're likely fine. Of course, if you are really worried, stick a piece of clean cardboard under the car for a day or two and see what's what.

POST 7Original post

I hope it's normal. Happens to me all the time as well.

POST 8Original post

"Love the smell of napalm in the morning"...Oopps. Sounds normal.

POST 9Original post

Normal with me ! this always happens, had to replace the oil seperator once, because car kept smoking (white smoke)

POST 10Original post

Mine also..it's part of the Porsche experience

POST 11Original post

what i figured out is that when you go high rpm on curves (step on it on curves)

POST 12Original post

I am pretty sure mine is coming from a a slight oil weep above the header. It never hits the floor but when a couple drops shake loose during driving they hit the hot header and poof we have that oil smell. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/238937-photo-of-leak.html
