Also, I've used three of their recommended partners for mounting and have always been pleased.

I've used TireRack off and on over the years, but often find that their recommended installer charges way more than what Tirerack predicted.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

'04 996 w/ 18's - the rears are about shot at 15k and I need to replace them soon. Some questions:
Current tires are Michelin Pilot Sport - I assume they are the "ribbed" variant as shown on Tire Rack as Porsche OEM?
Does anyone get tires at Porsche dealer or are they uncompetitive? I live in Atlanta where Butler Tire has a good reputation as an indy......
Is an alignment likely to be necessary if there is no unusual wear pattern, juddering, pulling etc?
Thanks
I've never purchased tires from Porsche, go with your indy place. If you don't feel like the car needs an alignment don't get it done.
I will generally get my tires aligned when I put my summer tires on. The winter wheels are 17" vs. the 18" summer tires so for me I notice a difference.
Rob
You should not need an alignment if you do not have an irregular wear pattern. I would not buy tires from a Porsche dealer. When I bought my car from a Porsche dealer, the Pre Owned Sales Manager agreed to put new tires on it and he sent the car to a tire shop other than the dealer saying that it was cheaper for him to go offsite than get charged from his service department. I assume he gets a better rate than you or I would!
Discount Tire Direct has treated me VERY well in the past and I find their prices to be very competitive as well. It's not to say that Tire Rack is bad; it just is what it is....
Nick,
I bought rears at Discount Tire on P'tree Industrial. Got them to match TireRack pricing.
Porsche dealer pricing is pretty high, and Butler is high as well.
A great little shop for alignment and highspeed on-car balancing is Gran Tourismo East in Chamblee. [phone removed]. Their service is impeccable. Just a little 'ol shop that caters to local gear heads of all stripes. They can't match Tirerack or Discount Tire tire prices, but their technicians are top notch.
Since everyone can't get the Mich Pilot Spor 2 (unless you're willing to pay the Porsche Parts Dept mark up) from any othe r source.
I'll get the Mich pilot rib. My top choice.
Second is the S-02A.
Both "N" certified.
Paul Marangoni - first post of yours that I've read that I disagree with - sorry - I've purchased 3 sets of tires and one set of tires and rims from Tirerack - purchases were always effortless and low cost. Also, I've used three of their recommended partners for mounting and have always been pleased.
No need to be sorry. I liked Tire Rack too at first. I got a great deal on some H&R Coilovers. My problems with them started when it came time for warranty replacements (twice) and the nightmare I went through was out of this world. There is no excuse for the way they handled it. I also blame H&R for their part in the insanity, but Tire Rack could have and should have treated me very differently. Needless to say, they will not get another chance at screwing me over. Wheel Enhancement gets as much of my business as possible and will get even more from now on. I expect and demand good service, and Tire Rack wasn't up to snuff in my case.
Well, Paul - it's good to know about your experience - sorry to hear about it. I guess I'll keep using Tirerack for tires but avoid them for suspension. I keep hearing references to Wheel Enhancement and the feedback is always positive. They're in Culver City, right? Do you have a contact to recommend?
Wheel Enhancement is run by David and John. Either guy can answer all your questions. They specialize in wheels and tires for Porsche and their prices are very competitive.
I've not had a bad experience at Tire Rack, either. The reason I mentioned Discount Tire Direct is that in buying snow tires this year, they went over and above the call of duty to track me down a set in December. Basically, they searched every one of their brick and mortar stores until a set that fit my 18" wheels was discovered. They have earned my business next year when I replace the summer tires.
I've used TireRack off and on over the years, but often find that their recommended installer charges way more than what Tirerack predicted. So much so that I would have been better buying elsewhere, like Discount Tire, where the installation is cheaper. And usually Discount Tire will match Tirerack pricing including shipping.
Discount tires treated me OK money wise on a Pirelli warranty adustment, but they scratched 3 of 4 wheels. I tried another Discount tire store and they scratched the wheels also. I got my last set mounted at the local race tire dealer, no scratches. BTW, Pirelli was very hard to deal with on the tire warranty.
Never had an install on tires from Discount. I just buy from them and have my factory authorized service center swap them out for me. I guess it just feels safer that way.
Do all of these vendors supply N rated tires no problem? I wasn't even fully aware of this complication until I read the article posted on the tire rack website!
I would never take my Wheels to anyone other than a shop that "I" know does good work mounting and balancing.
I always have the tires shipped to the place that I choose to have my tires mounted at. Cost me $80 for mounting and balancing on the lastest high tech Hunter machine about a month ago.. Perfect all the way around and smooth as silk.. So as long as whomever you buy the rubber from gets it there as promised and for the right price it does not really matter where you purchase it from.
The bigger issue is the work of the installer... It's not always about saving a few bucks... Just ask any person who has had their wheel scratched and I'm sure they would have paid more to have it done right.
$80. Porsche just quoted me $200 to unmount, mount and balance tires this morning. Is this a New York vs. FL thing or an OEM vs. Indy thing? Having had a wheel scratched in the past, I am leery of going another route to save a few bucks only to regret it later (hear that, Bob?). Meanwhile, I checked out their wheel balancer and it's the latest Hunter machine. But still not cheap. I'm going to call back this afternoon and negotiate a bit more.
