I did use a charger on the dead one and it took a long, overnight period but it finally started to hold.

Starter must not only be using every bit of the weak battery charge, but draining all the electronics to crank.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've known my battery was weak since fall. After 2 months of winter, weather looked good, decided to go out for a drive. Turned the key, and nothing happened for a fraction of a second!! Then all the instrument lights went out, the windows all went down a quarter inch, the engine cranked and fired. Lights came back on, and windows went back up. Drove around thirty miles or so, parked for an hour. It did the same thing again when I started it! Starter must not only be using every bit of the weak battery charge, but draining all the electronics to crank. Needless to say, next stop was for a battery, heh-heh . Anyone experience this?

POST 2Original post

Have your battery load tested - it could be a bad ignition switch also.

POST 3Original post

Yes, in the car I just bought. When I went to look at the car the battery was fully flat. So we jumped it and I figured it would charge. I drove on home and it did a couple of weird things on the way I can't remember now. But I thought it was either the low voltage or the car was s--t. I turned it off at home, luckily I didn't kill it on the way I find, and when I went to start it again, all you describe and more. It's like the computer is drunk! New battery and all's well. A Porsche mechanic,I read it here too I think, said that the system in the car will not charge a dead battery, and only maintains the charge on a good one. I did use a charger on the dead one and it took a long, overnight period but it finally started to hold. I got a new one anyway. I have never heard of let alone seen any car act like it did with the bad battery. Spooky. bill

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Spooky is right. Battery is over 4 years old, Loren. Got the new battery in, reset the clock, and everything is right as rain again. Wife saw me working on the car, and asked what was wrong. I told her about the weird goings on, and she got all excited. She thought it might be happening to her 987S, too, since it has been garaged even longer than mine. I didn't have the heart to tell her her car was less than a year old. She was disappointed when the car 987S started right up with nary a wiggle to show for it. Women. You just have to love them, 'cuz for sure I can't understand them.
