Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Jake - would you recommend getting a drain plug sending unit or use another location ?
Leading evidence: 'Use another location' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use another location' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

The oil temp sender is not active in all 996s, some of them use a calculated value from the coolant temp to give an oil temp value.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have no experience with external gauges but I wonder if I can tap into the oem oil temperature sending unit and wire it to an aftermarket gauge ?
I was unable to find an iPhone app to show me the oil temp aside of the durametric, which require a computer .. So can't do that while driving..
Any idea ?
True, hard to look at a computer screen while driving, but it can log....allowing you to look at it later when you're stationary.
You cannot tap the sender, bit you can add a t-fitting. However, oil temp there will not be representative. The best place for average readings is in the sump, because that plus a few degrees is what goes into the engine. So if you have an oil temp problem, that's where it is easiest to measure. I have for other cars usually been able to source oil drain plugs tapped for a temp sensor, but not seenone for our cars specifically. It will reduce ground clearance of course a little...but it is the easiest thing to mount.
I would just get a durametric...

When comparing the oil temps from our stand alone data loggers (with sensors in the sump and cam covers) to that of the OBDII I have seen deviations of 70*F. The OBDII oil temp data is less than accurate.
Install an analog stand alone gauge.
I'd be curious to see anybody who sell a drain plug with a sensor for our cars.
Or hear Jake about where we can/should install an oil temp sensor.
I think this is a pretty important information especially for those of use going to the track on a non regular basis. We don't have all the equipment we should have to cool the oil properly and the oil temp would really help to know when we should ease of the gas.
