Suspected cause
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that someone who wants a $15k Porsche is probably a bit less nit picky.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

At first I thought you were looking for advice in your title but then you say that you recommend a PPI.
Are you looking for advice or giving advice? Do you have an affiliation with this car?
Price I don't know but what do you see in the pics that allows you to think the car looks like a pile of crap?
I'm not looking to dispute your opinion just to learn what you see and I missed. I'm always looking to improve my car evaluation skills.
didn't you know "ivangene" has special spiritual skills? - he can formulate an accurate opinion by just looking at photos. very rare skill indeed. i'm waiting for the book....
i'm assuming he used these criteria to come up with the car being garbage.
1) car has been repainted - look at the Carrera badge on the butt... it's really high riding AND it's freakin' put on crooked. really?
2) The camera used to take the pictures of the car produced poor quality car pictures. Definite drop in value of the car by 50 points for sure.
3) missing bumper covers, another -50.
4) unoriginal rims -100
5) orange side markers and headlights, pffft -2000
but IMHO, 1) is the only thing i spotted
the fact its meridian metallic is enough to have me walk away - how can you tell its a repaint? - the badge could have fallen off or stolen and the idiot that replaced it applied it crooked.
If you were looking for a $15k 996 with decent mileage this would be worth checking out. 108k seems high at first glance, but fairly reasonable usage for a '99.
Other than the errant badge and what may be a faded dashboard, nothing in the photos causes immediate concern. The Carfax seems straight. As the OP warns, of course a thorough PPI is critical to dig deeper.
And as for color... At this price you take what you find. The wheels fall under the same category. Wouldn't be surprised if the options list shows the original wheels as 17s.
So the question remains: What exactly is the OP warning about?
Sorry, folks I was away and missied the flurry of emails.
This is the story. I saw the ad when it was at 15,500. I had a gearhead buddy in that area so I had him go over and take a look. He drove the car and other than the fact that it was hard to get into 2nd gear, thought it was worth a professional PPI. I had the owner take it to Music City for a PPI and they called before doing the leak down because there was already several items including bad synchros. I said forego the leak down (save me $100) that that was all I needed to know and I told the owner that I wasn't looking for a car that needed that much work. He came back with a counter and we have been working from there and currently I have an offer on the table to him that would make it a nice "project" for me. If somene else will pay him more, I'll be happy to find a better car closer to me and save me the work fixing this one up.
I wasn't sure of the protocol in this situatuation but I though at least putting a bug in a potential buyers ear was appropriate.
By all means let me know if you have anymore question?
no need to wait - it's been in print for a long time

here is what I saw
"996, GOOD SHAPE"
If i'm selling a car and it's in "good shape" - it's a pile!
thankfully he let you know twice it has new tires
first pic: anyone too lazy to replace the front licence plate or fix the marks left in the bumper from the little stand offs clearly cares about the car
second pic: yup, that front was whacked - it'll be fine - matches the dent in the hood
third: nice window covers - they scream WALMART - but thankfully the sides are tinted so dark no one will ever see you inside - a sign of a youthful driver? IDK....how many of you run limo tint - it's nice that the rear spoiler is up....cleaning?
who cares about wheels, there are consumable - I have many pairs....some even fit the cars I own
another sign of quality - key left in the door....who uses a key to open their car...umm... those with issues to the FOB, dead battery (oh wait, its a new battery) - so what's with the key in the door?
why is there so much dust under the left rear seat upper? been in a body shop for a while? doubt it - but I wonder
interior in general looks weathered and very worn - its 108k miles...but they look like they were rough ones
exhaust tips are misaligned - someone was in there - who doesnt put things back together straight - its a sign of quality work
Look the car might be OK.... but when I see a pattern of turdness I call turd
this gives me the impression of a very low priced car with lots of little issues - to me, that's a headache and not worth my time to invest in a PPI
I was going off 1/2 cocked about calling a a piece of crap just to see who would jump on me.....and who would ask what made me say that - in the end, I am not looking for a car like this so it doesnt matter - but when someone asks me to cheack out a car...I nit pick the crap out of it and at least they can know going in all that I see... sometimes the list of small things doesnt bother people and sometimes it does - I for one am bothered by it - but that's me
So get a copy of my book - its on Amazon IIRC - $3.99 with a mail in $15.00 rebate offer
It's a $15k car.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that someone who wants a $15k Porsche is probably a bit less nit picky.
Or let me guess? Near showroom new, perfectly documented, needs no work 996s can be had for a couple of grand more with lower mileage all day long right?
Generally pickiness is best kept commensurate with budget and price. It's completely unfair to evaluate a bargain basement car against blue ribbon winner standards.
This is not a $15K car. Maybe I would offer $10K if the color is what I am looking for and the engine is in good shape. Members here who do their homework pay a few thousand more for an excellent 996.
It does not take long to drop a few thou on a car like this to be just presentable.
THIS ^^^^
this car isnt worth going any farther on....
the car above isnt a bargain - its a money pit that will attract more buyers that wont take care of it based on cost of entry...a steady decline of maintenance and care
you will see more and more of these cars come up that suggest the owners could not afford the car and just drove it till they had to sell it - the average McDonalds worker could buy that car but when it costs $500+ for an oil change, window regulator and a new headlight bulb - those items wont get done. )let alone $3500 for some trans work - $1200 brake job...does Walmart carry brakes
