Sounds like the OP ran into a pretty obnoxious group.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I'm out cleaning up my Speedster replica, nice day for a nice drive... and in MY OWN neighborhood, I see about 10 Porsches. Half a dozen 997 and a couple 996 and air cooled...
Anyways, being the enthusiast that I am, I asked if they were a club and which one, etc.. Well long story short one guy was nice and informed me, but the second group laughed at me when I asked to join and I told them I had a 996. Following them laughing at me, she looked straight at me and asked, "YOU have one?"
Talk about a bad taste in my mouth. I will never go near the Orange County PCA now. Besides everyone looked like they were over 60 and there were a lot of old woman driving with them...
I'm gonna start my own under 60 Orange County Porsche Club... Called the Anti-Geriatric Porsche Club of OC
Admission requirements:
1. Own a Porsche (Doesn't matter if you look young or old, or homeless or rich)
2. You cannot wear Depends or any type of adult diaper.
Haha
I am surprised by the arrogance, but not by the median age. PCA members are usually retired people looking for social events. younger kids have usually better things to do
Don't judge the whole club because of a few! I've done many events with them and I've never seen anything like that.
Go to
http://www.pcaocr.com/
and check out the calendar and drop by an event.
What would have been fun for you is if you walked away and then promptly phoned in a complaint for excessive noise, loud laughing and revving engines, try to include license plate numbers and then hang up the phone before they got your name (at this point, they already got your phone number but don't worry... without your name it's an informal complaint. They are, however, still obligated to send someone down, also things like noise are hard to disprove, especially when a bunch of exotic sports cars owned by arrogant ******** are involved).
Next, if you really want them to get down there fast, go to a pay phone and have your woman call and say that she is a concerned mother and some maniac almost hit her kid because they were diving crazy while flaring and wailing their arms wildly!
Have her also add that she suspected drinking (as I am sure that at least one of them (particularly someones wife) either has a bottle of wine or at least had drank a bunch beforehand. LoL
Lastly, sit back and have the last laugh! It's your neighborhood, you should not be made to feel bad by a bunch of strangers.
Sorry, that is simply not correct. While the average age does tend toward the upper 40's, the number of retirees is a very small percentage, at least here in the Carolinas. And I would say that was true of the 2008 Parade were hosted as well.
That said, the group you ran into were total @sshats. Sorry you had to endure that.
If that's your replica in the avatar pic - I'm surprised they weren't at least curious about the build and details. It looks like a very nice car. I wouldn't lump the whole OC group into the same catagory as the few you met. You might be making the same mistake some of them did about you. Indeed, sounds like the first one was friendly. And - some of the old farts can be pretty friendly and really know their way around a Porsche or a track. I'm no youngster, but I got instruction once from a guy who looked like father time. He knew that track like he built it and showed me a line that was perfect for my car and abilities. Toss the bad berry - enjoy the remaining fruit.
Just not true in any way. My local region has everyone from college students to old rich guys... One of the great things about the club is the intergenerational mingling that is so lacking in modern life.
Sounds like the OP ran into a pretty obnoxious group. There's no excuse for such bad behavior.
Ralph, I see where you're coming from, but really, the majority are on the older side - dominated by baby boomers and sometimes it feels like a AARP convention. Most of the Hurricane region events I've attended have been skewed on the older side - the same was true when I was a Riesentoter. In contrast, the BMWCCA events I've attended are distinctly on the younger side - Gen X and younger.
That really surprises me. Over the years I've done several evets with that exact group and they are always friendly and very welcoming. I live in the east San Fernando valley, but have joined in their activities because one of my closests buddies belongs and he has invited me. My experience is that the bulk of the Grand Prix group are early to middle 30s with some of the office holders in their 40s and 50s. They are a good group of people and great Porsche enthusiasts
LOL! I remember when I first bought my car I had just parked it at my old job (where we used to wear jeans and t-shirts) and I overheard a couple of well-dressed guys coming out of a Camry saying, "There's no way that could be his car..." I just laughed to myself.
What I found out in both the PCA and kickboxing (yeah I had to throw that in there, trust me!) - never judge a book by its cover. I've met Porsche owners who do fall into the stereotype and others that you wouldn't even imagine would be fans of the vehicles. My PCA experiences have been great and keep in mind I even started with a 944! Been a member now for 10 years and it's all been good. Just hold your head up and dismiss the idiots.
No slam on PCA, but the events I've attended locally here made me feel like I was visiting my wife's grandma at the "home". Definitely an older crowd. Nice for sure, but much older.
I have never felt welcome at any PCA event, only reason I join is for Panorama and the occasional tech event held at a dealer, etc.........I am definitely not a normal porsche owner...early 30's (look younger), tattoos, enlisted military, etc.......and back in college I was a member with my 944 and went to a couple events......I was the youngest by 20 years at least lol......
I am sorry you had a bad experience. I know the LSRPCA has a big mix of people. There does seems to be some different groups within our club. There are people that like DE's and that is all they do. Then there are people that like the drives and the one that like the social events. We has around a 1000 members and only 200ish showed up to the 50th anniversary last year.
I joined first with my 951... went to Autocrosses, which I think has a specific audience within the PCA. There was almost every kind of Porsche there "nice" to "rough" ... "race" to "pristine". And everyone doing what they should be... going fast.
I agree with Litesonic, that the PCA includes many kinds of members and Porsches. My region has a large AARP group but also has a lot of Club Racers. Speaking of which, I hope many of you got to the New Jersey Motorsports Park for the Rolex Grand Am event last weekend. The PCA Club race was just prior to the main event, and included a great selection of GT3s and lots of other well turned out, and mostly well driven, race cars. Mother's Day held down attendance, but I never miss this event -great fan access (I chatted with Hurley Haywood, David Donahue and many others). I highly recommend this track and hope Mike Andretti pulls off a second Baltimore ALMS event.
I get this all the time. Mint garage kept 996 aero, No dubs on my ride, no stanced out air ride, 25 year old black guy. I don't fit the typical Porsche owner look especially being in my aircraft mechanic uniform. oh well
+1 here in Oregon! Definitely lacks diversity here too in many many ways and not very inclusive community. I just joined national PCA to get Panorama and I am not interested in becoming a dues paying local member.
Philip P my man that is S T U N N I NG!!
Whats the spec/motor? Would love one, but the weather in Ireland and lack of gatage space to keep it always brings me back to reality..
We limited the event to 200. That was all the room would hold. It was also all we could afford, as the club was subsidizing the cost.
LSR does indeed have a big mix of folks, as do most other PCA regions. Auto-x, concours, tours, coffee and cars, DE, racing. There is a lot of room in the PCA for folks with different interests, as there should be.
I'm sorry that the OP had a negative experience with some PCA members. From my experience, that is not at all typical.
Good to know there is some diversity among 996 owners. I've looked at pics from the local PCA, and everyone looks like they've been retired for 10 years. This has been a big reason why I've had very little interest in joining. Also, I've noticed around town the people who stare at my car the most are guys who look like the're getting ready to retire in the next 10 years.
About how much does it weigh?
I'm just curious because my Sonett has a 1.7l v4 that puts out about 65hp. It's far from quick (especially by today's standards) but it only weighs about 1900lbs. and I can imagine that an extra 30hp on a car that size/weight might feel downright "zippy."

Philip P, don't dismiss the OC PCA group over this. Those individuals do NOT represent the group as a whole. There is a LARGE group of hardcore autocrossers and racers who drive everything from 914's and 924's to 997 GT2RS's. Those guys (including me) are out there to have a GREAT time with our cars and love the camaraderie of the group. We have young drivers (teens) all the way to drivers in their 70's. I'd say the average age at AX events is about 35. We are a very friendly and outgoing group. Log onto the PCA OCR website and find out when the next autocross is (they are on the runways at El Toro). Come on out and hang with us for a day. You'll LOVE it and us.
Sorry about the wash and shine and cruise group you ran into. They DO tend to be a bit more uppity than the AXers.
Well I'll definitely and try to goto the next AX event. I usually go out with the BMW CCA group because my friends instruct but hopefully i can meet some cool people. Also just got my turbo twists and put some NT01 on it for the track. Want to put them to good use
Sorry about the boneheads that you encountered. I am a member of the Orange Coast PCA. I mostly do the driving events AX, DE, TT and now POC racing.
The OC PCA group of people that I spend a lot of time with are some of the most solid, friendly people that I have ever had the pleasure of being around. Period.
These people have gone out of their way to help me so many times. At the track with car issues, parts, gas and driving instruction, they basically fall over themselves to help you out.
Once you know the people, they help you the same way in the real world. I have made more friends with the OC PCA than any club that I have been associated with.
Come out and join us this weekend at El Toro for some AX! Cape Auto is providing lunch!
