GL with the sale, I was curious so I ran two searches, dealer and private party, on cars.com (because they pick up local newspaper as well as direct listings)
Leading evidence: 'Run two searches, dealer and private party' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Suggestion
I hope the links work with the filters I used (2000 911 Cab, 60K to 80K miles, Nationwide), The asking prices from private parties seem to indicate a sub 30K settlement, but aren't nearly as reliable as hard sales data.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2000 996 C2 Cabriolet. 73K miles. Silver with gray interior and has the matching hardtop. Very good shape - has been garage kept and maintained by great dealer mechanic. Stock wheels. Fabspeed Maxflo sport exhaust/tips. Aeroll front bumper/side skirts. B&M Shortshifter with Agency Power shift linkage. One small body scratch and some small scratches on the two rims.
ALSO, just had big service done. 75K dealer service PLUS replaced rear main seal and bolts as well as intermediate shaft seal. Engine and transmission are now cleaned and immaculate. Oil pan removed, cleaned and resealed.
Also, brakes and rotors are only 12K miles old.
I am looking to sell this beauty in the near term. What price do you think I should be asking?
I'd like to see you get $30K but not sure if this market will support that number. If you want to sell it quickly, it will probably need to go in the $27k to $28K range. GLWTS...I hope you get more.

Damn, nothing like a crap economy on top of normal depreciation!
Excellent arguement to give my P-car hating wife - "Honey, it's worth less than a Honda Accord - we have to keep it now!"
Heck guys, it's easy to read that the economy is doing very poorly, to put it mildly. Porsche 911 sales on a year over year basis have been positively disgraceful. Read

for August sales date (-45% y/y). Indeed, the car has been selling poorly since March. Granted, much of this results from the impending release of the new 997, but a greater proportion is a consequence of the housing crisis and tighter lending standards at banks.
I'm delighted to keep driving around in my 2000 cab. Still feels like new.
P.S. - I think 30K for your car is probably fair. Mind you, you can always try the eBay route.
Just a couple of data points:
Stevens Creek Porsche here in Santa Clara, CA has a 2000 silver/blue 6 speed cab with 58k miles, and they were willing to sell it for $29k. I just picked up a 03 C2 Cab 6 speed with 48k miles for $31k.
More data: These are the cars that actually sold on E-BAY recently. The other listings (many many other listings) did not sell because the desired price was not met. Sucessful auctions: All were model year 2000. I'll list the body type, mileage, selling price: CAB, 68K $24.600 ; C4 mill ED, 34K, $28.000 ; CAB, 59K, $26.500 ; CAB, 35K, $30.000 ; CP, 87k, $20,200 ; CP, 69k, $22.950
Thanks for everyone's thoughts and input. I just posted an ad (#8297) on Rennlist classified page. Asking $27,000 OBO. I really believe this is way too low but hopefully it creates some buying interest. It's also scheduled to start on Ebay Sunday October 5th at 10pm EDT; no reserve auction with starting bid of $22K. It would be great (for all us 996 owners!) to get above $27K in this tough economy.... especially given the $4K I just put into it in September!
PM or post (if you are allowed?) the ebay link once you go that route. I have a friend who might be interested. There was a silver C2 cab with 60k miles locally that he wanted to buy from a small dealership, but it sold first for $25,500. He was asking $26,000 and he only had it about a week. Maybe you'll have the same luck with a quick sale.
whether it's the economy, stock market or 996 used market - right now if you follow the herd and panic.....you will lose.
Hang in there - the economy is cyclicle.....it will bounce back in a bit.....
uh, ok. thanks for providing some real data points of past sales.
FYI.....I just looked at alot of 99-01 coupes for considering converting to a H class PCA racer and the 99's were in the mid to high 20's with the coupes a tad more. So a 2000 CAB should bring at a minimum 30 if not a tad more.
So to say 25K if lucky is not accurate.
Look again.
The ASKING prices may be mid 20's, but the cars are not moving at that price.
This car is the only one with "bidding" action on it in EBay

If you search on the VIN, you will see where it was also auctioned on ebay canada.
On both the US and Canada sites, shill bidders ran up the car, but no one bought it.
This one is more typical of what I have been seeing.

that, and this forum
<snip>
here is my data
2000 C4 64000 miles
$19,000 trade-in
Best price I got out of 4 dealers and a couple would not even look at it.

That's trade.
Regardless.....It probably doesn't help that the economy is in the toilet right now. So while the car might be worth "x" it sure isn't selling. This isn't a "buyer's market" as there are NO BUYERS. Better to just keep the car.
For me what a car is worth is the price someone actually pays for it. Closed sales, not for sales. The 2000 996's that actually sell, sell for between 21-27K, most sell for less than 25K. I hate the concept too, I own a 1999 996, but it is what it is, reality.
In South Africa ,I recently paid $48k for a 99 cab with 64k fron a official Porsche dealer.I wanted to cry when I see the prices you guys pay for your cars.It is all reletive as a new 997 c4 cab costs $144 here and i live in a house here that is worth $600k that would cost 2 mill in the states. I dont feel so bad now
No... the auction ended as scheduled with no bids! Someone could have had it for $22K which would have been a steal. My timing with this financial meltdown was obviously pretty unfortunate but I can't say I'm surprised that people aren't stepping up. I'm in no rush and would feel guilty selling it in the low 20's (or lower)! I will take the high road with a longer term view on this car's value until the market stabilizes!
I've been thinking about getting rid of my 02 C4 Cab with 40,000 miles, CPO through 05/10, 6-speed, and many options. I'd like to replace it with a similar vintage Turbo. I finally decided to pull the trigger today after having found the Turbo I wanted. Unfortunately, the dealership offered $25k as a trade in.
I bought this car in May of this year for $40k thinking it was already done with its quick depreciation. I thought it would continue to lose value slowly, but $15k in 5 months? Wow!
Guys, are you kidding me? The S&P 500 is down -40% from the highs in October last year. We are in a full-blown recession. Keep your cars. Drive the hell out of them and enjoy yourselves. But to expect that you are going to be able to get a good (or even reasonable) sale price on a discretionary and depreciating asset in this environment is WAY TOO optimistic. Your fellow sales competitors are dying to sell their cars in order to offset job losses, market losses, etc.
Of course, the corollary of this is that anyone interested in buying a used Porsche right now is going to get a heck of a great deal.
